View Full Version : Subwoofer too large?
Slappified 12-09-08, 07:10 PM After hours and hours of reading and searching here, I've narrowed my choices down to BIC H100/PA-120, CSX-12, or CSX-15. I thought about the A2-300 but the wait time is much too long.
1. My budget is roughly $400.
2. The room is 20x20x8 minus a 6x13x8 storage area. The floor is carpeted over concrete with approx 140 sf of tile also.
3. The usage will be 99% HT with 1% other.
4. I listen at moderate volume levels.
5. It should look reasonably good, but appearances aren't a real issue.
The question I have that I haven't found an answer to is: Can you have too large of a sub. I am heavily leaning toward the CSX-15 but was wondering if it might be too big? I'd like to have something that would last me a while and would work if I move in the future. I'm not much of an audiophile and while I'm getting good (mid-level) components, they surely aren't the best. So is a 15 too much?
Thanks.

For as much movie watching as you plan on doing and the size of your room I would recommend getting that Ed A300 sub.Maybe you can get the bic h100 to tide you over while you wait for the ed and then sell it but spec and review wise especially for ht the ed owns all the other subs on that list.Ihave a bic and it is definitely a fine sub bottomiing out 24 hz the ed just hits harder and deeper down to 16 hz.
I run a 15" , 400W Jamo in a roughly 19'X24'x7.5' room. It's in no way too much :) Better to have room to spare than to overdrive it later, imo.
mojomike 12-09-08, 07:25 PM You can't have too big of a sub. Due to physics, all things being equal, bigger is better.
Scott Simonian 12-09-08, 07:27 PM Yeah, I have quite a bit smaller room that you do and I run dual high excursion 18's in boxes I built myself in the summer of 07'. Can never have too big of a subwoofer. :D
Not sure if you would be interested but for $400 you could build a subwoofer that would best any of the <$400 subwoofers listed.
Raymond Leggs 12-09-08, 07:31 PM The sub can never be too big, most people prefer bigger as opposed to smaller. :p
This goes for other walks of life also.
SteveMo 12-09-08, 07:37 PM What do you mean minus a storage area? I think I see a possiblity for an IB in your future, or maybe I am mistaken.

If ED would have some in stock I'm sure they would sell alot more. I seriously considered the ED until I found out how long the wait is. I'd just hate to waste money by buying something while waiting on the ED. The sub I currently have is a RCA HTIB unpowered sub that won't connect to my brand new, just delivered SR806:(. Since anything is an upgrade over what I have, maybe I'll go cheaper CSX-12/BIC H100 and then move up in a year once I figure out how lacking my new (future old) sub is.

Didn't really think about building one. Right now its out of the question as I'm involved in a whole house remodel (finished the HT room first :D). Would it be feasible to buy something "cheaper" now that I could use parts of later to build a sub? I would estimate from reading the DIY threads that is takes about a month of weekends to properly build one. I might have the time is 6 months or so and would rather do this than buy a high end sub.

The storage area is where I keep my tools until I can get a garage built. I could do an IB (barely know what that is based on a quick search) as I currently have built-ins housing my equipment which extends into the storage area.
This forum is great but there are WAY too many good options and makes it hard to figure out what to do:confused:.

In terms of bass output, no. That's why there is a gain knob.
TCARCIO 12-09-08, 08:34 PM If you set up the sub correctly with eq and room treatments then no way is it too big. I just built a new sub useing the Shiva x in a 4cf sealed enclosure and for shere sound quality and hard hitting it blew my A5-350 out of the water. Being sealed it doesn't go as low as the ed but it hit's much harder being powered by an EP-2500. Needless to say I sold the ED......

Patdeisa 12-09-08, 11:17 PM I have an SVS PB10 in a room that's smaller than yours (~300 ft^2), and I could easily see upgrading to a larger sub, such as the new PB12.
