i have a progressive scan dvd player that does both ntsc and pal, hooked up to an in26 projector nativer resolution of 1024 x 768 and i am trying to figure out which is better to run in. I live in america so all my dvd's are ntsc format, but i can put the dvd player in pal format and it will run ntsc dvd;s at 576p as opposed to 480p, (accordint to the signal the projector is reading) and in 16:9 mode this would equal a pixel perfect match vertically,

i have also read about film sources being shot in 24p ntsc and 25p for pal, running at 60hz in ntsc i know the projector uses a 3:2 pulldown to get the frames equal in the 60hz reflash which can cause some jumpiness in the picture, showing frames like this: aa bbb cc ddd ee fff, etc....

i assume if i had a pal dvd that was shot at 25p and ran at 50 hz the images displayed would look like this: aa bb cc dd ee ff gg etc... and it would have less jumpiness although a slightly "lower" lower frame rate

if i run the ntsc dvd in pal i get 576p and its at 50 hz and pal runs at 25p which divides equally, so the frame rate would be 2:2 "smoother"

BUT... since the dvd is ntsc to begin with is it REALLY running in 25p displaying frames like this: aa bb cc dd etc. causing less jumpiness in the picture?

any insight is appricieated thanks

If you put an NTSC DVD in your player and then set the player to output as PAL, the player will have to do two things. First, it will upconvert the 480i to 576p (assuming you set for progressive scan). Then it will frame rate convert the 60 Hz to 50 Hz. After that, the signal is fed to your projector, which will just scale it again to its native 1024x768 resolution. This frame rate conversion may lead to jerkiness in the image.

You are better off just setting the DVD player for 480p. The frame rate will remain constant, and you will only be scaling the image once (in the projector).

ok but when i run the projector in 16:9 its running exactly 1024x 576 pixels, so there would be less conversion running it in 576p right? plus i have read that movies are filmed in 24p so at 60hz it does the 3:2 pulldown causing jerkiness in the image but in pal runs at 25p at 50hz so it would be 2:2 so a smoother image (in theroy) its hard for me to tell with the naked eye which is better but i can view it side by side to that make it tough.
