I'm looking into replacing my infocus 4805 (seems like a common thing to do here).

the entire time I used it in "low-power" mode, because the fan was simply WAY too stupidly loud otherwise. even in low power mode, the fan is really loud.

I'm ready to take the plunge and buy a (used) 720p projector. I'm pretty sure I'd prefer DLP, but the main factor in purchase is that it's extremely quiet.

great image quality is obviously important too, but it seems like a lot of projectors are doing a good job at throwing a pretty image onto the screen.

I'd like to pay less than $1k (ideally)

DLPs aren't as quiet as LCDs, so maybe look for the Mist HC1500. That's the quietest under 1k 720 DLP I can think of.

I have the HC1600 and I never hear it because my PS3 is louder than the projector.

For under $1,000 DLP the Marantz VP8600 is quieter than the HC1500.

+1 , and it throws a better image as well ;) .
