Check out this thread in the DVD recorders forum.

The picture quality is pretty decent playing DVDs but like all DVDRs it lack even the most basic player features such as remaining time, go-to functions, etc. If features don't matter to you then a DVDR might work for a player.

Okay, first off, thanks so much for all the expertise and knowledge on this site. It is the first place I go for info when considering a new device. Based on the specs and a lot of the talk on this site, I bought the EZ28K for my wife to time shift Craig Ferguson.

A couple of very practical impressions that maybe have not received the emphasis in this thread that I would have placed.

The good:
1. The ATSC tuner in this box is excellent. It pulls in signals very well. I use DTV boxes (very good CRT TVs I don't want to replace). I have compared the reception to the DigitalStream DTX 9950, an APEX w/passthrough, the ChannelMaster w/S-Vid and a couple of other cheap-o's (DS DTX9950 is by far the best of all these despite that it doesn't have S-video, but that is another thread). WAY better reception than any- as you might expect.

2. Nice menus. Other posters found them difficult, but I feel they are logical and in some cases appropriately redundant. Nice icon instruction in the lower left corner shows button strokes to achieve a given function on the remote. Nice UI on playback menu. Makes good DVD's for playback on other units (with top menu etc.)

3. Excellent recording quality as long as you are on 4 hour or better (DVD+RW).

4. Can control TV power, input and volume from remote. Volume is not common to other similar models (i.e. Toshiba D-R560) and is a KEY feature I looked for so I could just put the TV remote away.

The BAD!!!:
1. Very slow to switch channels. Sometimes just doesn't do it if you go too fast. This thing seems like it needs to think about the commends you give. And it isn't too smart. Can't edit out "input 1", "input 2" and "DV" inputs from channel menu/cycle. True even in "favorite" mode. Why is that?????

2. Pathetic on-screen program guide. It takes two key strokes to get the current program and the next program. Then all you get is title and time, no program description. How hard would that have been? Makes me really miss the program guide on my DigitalStream DTV box.

3. Lacking remote features. Lacks "Previous Channel", "mute" buttons.

4. No attempt to compensate program aspect with TV aspect. You need to manually zoom, unzoom every time program aspect changes. It takes an unacceptable FOUR button strokes to change zoom. No aspect over-ride setting for DVD playback.

Overall: Based purely on tuner quality and recording quality I would buy it again. But this thing has plenty of headroom to improve. If Panasonic would adopt some of the simple things from the DigitalStream box (1-stroke "aspect ratio/zoom" button on remote, "previous channel" button, decent program guide) this thing would gain a lot of usability. But the clumsiness keeps it in the bedroom on a secondary TV.

Having owned one I'd agree with just about all your comments, it's why I stressed in post #2 "If features don't matter to you then a DVDR might work for a player."
Even though duplicate posts are generally frowned upon you might want to consider duplicating or even linking your post in the EZ-28 thread, I'm sure others would be interested in your opinions and would probably find it easier in that thread than this one? Just a though:)

I'd link it but since it's not my post I wouldn't feel right unless asked to.
