View Full Version : Nice little CC $core on a Sub-12

Just have a few simple newb-ish questions....

But first, the local CC close-out is in full swing now, shame to see really, this was a brand new store, not open 11 months. Anyway, I've been driving by seeing the "close out" signs for a couple of months but never bothered with it, today of all days I decided to stop in and check out the Blu Ray flicks (picked clean of course ) and was happily surprised to see everything down to 50% off! On top of that, someone goofed on a tag, they had both a Sub-10 and a Sub-12 beside each other, BOTH maked/priced the same *originally $400, now $200* - of course I had them hook up the 12 for me, asked them to grab a dvd with the THX test stuff, listened to the nifty tone audio drop and it sounded nice, no issues (I was really only a little concerned about buying a floor model sub, but considering the store is under a year old, I figured it was a safe buy - not to mention the guy laughed at me a bit and said "not only that, but I only just got these new Klipsch subs in 3 months ago, its probably not been fired up a dozen times, much less really used") It looked immaculate as well. :)

So, I bought it. I KNOW there are other subs out there that top it performance wise and soooo many other things factor in (room size, other speakers, etc) and just mentioning it was bought in a retail store vs online makes some here cringe, but $200 for a "basically brand new" Sub-12 is a pretty nice deal, hate them or not....plus I'm coming from a measly Sony SA-WM500.

Newayz, in the coming few weeks I plan on finishing my speaker upgrade. The plan so far is most likely the Polk route, TSi500x2, TSi100x2, CS20 (maybe someday when I have more room I'll go 7.1 and add 2xTSi200). I'm not sure yet on Cherry or Black , my display stand has dark cherry legs, don't know if the "Polk Cherry" will look good or like @ss beside it, the shade looks so different, I may just stick w/black. I know the RT line is superior, but it will be a stretch as is to nab the ones listed, lol. Anything that screams "don't get those Polks considering the sub you just bought??" My hunch is that its a pretty decent/standard setup (bang for buck wise).

The other quick question, with my Onkyo 605 and those speakers, any quick/starter recomended settings (particualary on the sub itself and within Audyessy) or should I head off and do my own homework on that, lol!? Thanks for any input.

Dont worry the sub will blend just fine with those Polks.

Thanks for the input. =)

Wow, after a day or so of fooling around with positioning, Audyessy 'takes' and some quick crash course reading here (mostly in the official audyessy thread because I was first thrown off a bit about the unusual distance/level results compared to what I had been acustomed to with the old sub, I mean the old sub always measured correctly with Audyessy @ 12' from the sweet spot, now with the new Sub-12 in the same spot, its measuring it at 14-15' away, but apparently thats very normal due to some internal filtering, etc), I'm pleased with the purchase and one happy mutha, lol!

I think I have it tweaked just about right for now, it might not be the be all/end all sub around these parts, though it seems to get strong word elsewhere, this thing crushes my old/puny sub by miles! Problem is, now I CAN'T WAIT to finish the upgrade!! Off to checkout some HBII & Kung Fu Panda for some DTS HD-MSTR and TrueHD sub-sonic goodness, see if the house stays upright! :)

my setup is close to yours, only I have 3.1 Polks RTI a6 + csi a4, Onkyo 606, Klipsch sub12.

How do you have your frequencies setup? I can't find my Audyessy microphone..

I put them at 50Hz all 3 speakers, LFE at 120Hz.

This sub is awesome, full of floor shaking fury.

Congrats on the sub deal.

If you aren't afraid of refurbs check out the Polk Audio eBay store. Tons of great deals that may move you up to the RTi series for less than the TSi series. They come with 5 year warranty so really should be safe and from what I have heard the products that ship look brand new. Anyway just thought you might want to take a look.

Good find. Actually, the Klipsch Sub-12 has an MSRP of $500.

Thanks for that, mojo, I'll start looking on the bay, still have plenty of time to shop around.

That sucks, hope you find that thing. Sounds like a SWEET rig you've got!

For the moment, I'm a little different becuase of still not having the new Polks, but based on my current, slighty older skool towers and center, I'm at this now in the setup menu after several Audyessy passes (it kept resulting somewhere around these same figures)

Sony mains (45hz - 50k): 80hz, +3
Polk CSM center (55hz - 22k): 80hz, +2
Sony bookshelf surrounds (80hz - 50k): 100hz, +4
Klipsch Sub-12 LFE @ 120hz, -14 (doesn't look right, but sounds great, go figure. I have the phase switch at 0, the freq knob at full/120 and the gain a little more than half full).

Exactly! I knew that and right away realized someone goofed on the tag, maybe because they had just filled out the sub-10 tag right beside it they figured it was the same, maybe because the place was a mad house, dunno, lol. There was a scary moment though when the guy tried to ring me up, the register showed him the true price of $500 of course - he asked the manager to come and "fix" it for him and sure enough, they held to their "everything must go" notion because he didn't bother haggling w/me, sold it for the $200 it was tagged for, manufacturers warranty and all. I've got a buddy coming over today to check out the new sub and give me $50 for my old Sony, this just keeps getting better and better - maybe Costanza was right, "cheapness is a sense", lol, but nothing beats that feeling of a deals working out like this! :D

To put your "lucky" situation into perspective ... I thought I'd visit my local CC that's also shutting down to see what was left. Actually, I didn't anticipate much as the street corner sign-holders with the 50% off signs had additional signs stating "fixtures also available for sale".

The store was actually mobbed with people - buying those last few pieces or shreds of what remained. The audio gear was severely picked over - with basically the only sub that was left was something from Polk for $200, or down from $400. The only product in abundance appeared to be spools of DVDs, CDs, etc. as well as the display models of televisions.

supposedly our "local" CC isn't one of the ones closing, but man there were empty shelves everywhere and a general feeling of necrosis, I must say...

I've had my Sub-12 now for a few weeks and once properly dialed in (still tweaking of course) it sounds great with Klipsch Quartet Mains...enjoy and VERY nice price...
