Do any current DVD players use coax for video? It would pretty bad if so. You mean component or s-video or composite, right?

HDMI and component are better than the other methods. In theory they have about the same capability for DVD-video quality, but for practical reasons involving Digital Rights Management, HDMI is preferred these days.

Compared to what? And what sort of improvement are you expecting? Unless there is something really wrong with your current setup, there aren't many possibilities for a "night and day" improvement in DVD picture quality. Improvements are usually more subtle.

Are you using a calibration disc? I would recommend doing that before spending money on new gear.

What player are you using now? What connection method? What is "standard hd"?

I am using a go video region free and using the standard coaxial. I do not believe it does upscalling?

I just ordered the Pioneer player but Pioneer say's it is region 1 where I was reading on the web and does not say anything about region free?

You cannot upscale over coax, composite or s-video. Only over component (with legal restrictions), VGA, DVI and HDMI.

If the player does not upscale the display will do it. It's nice to have a choice, but not absolutely required.

Coax is the worst connection method.
