:DHello, this is my second and last attempt (won't push the luck) at getting your hints and cues on placing in the right spot my 2 subs. I followed some advies but not much change. See the graphic first, I have to deal with limited space and the furniture cannot be moved right now. It ain't a HT, it's a 2 channel receiver with 2 sub out. On the graphic, I get the exact bass coming from Sub 1 I like when I sit in the purple armchair. I read all the documentation existing on sub placement and the last thing I have to do is to place the Sub 1 where I sit and move around the place and check for the right bass. Bingo! But you, experts, what would you do with my actual setting. I know I will have to make compromises. Really want to settle this Sub thing this weekend. Thanks a million times. The first thing I would do is get rid of one sub. There is usually one spot in every room where the sub is optimized, especially non-treated rooms. Placing two subs perfectly symmetrical on each side of your TV may look cool, but often can yield catastrophic results. I initially used the "just try" method for finding the best spot in the room for the sub. I was actually right on for when my buddy came over we tried the "placing the sub where you sit and walk around till you find the spot" method and it's exactly where I had placed the sub. I suggest that you find the perfect spot for one sub and then experiment with the placement of sub number 2 to see if you can place the sub in a spot where it doesn't cancel out the other sub too badly. Most likely that spot will not be the prettiest spot but it's not all about looking pretty. It's about sounding pretty. Depending on the design of your subs, you can stack one on top of the other. That way both subs are in the optimum spot and have a minimal chance of canceling each other out. Make sure you have a bass tester CD to hear exactly what you're getting. Test with music. Music hides nothing. If your music sounds like crap, you must adjust.

I would start by turning one sub off and moving around the room to listen. You may find the second sub is cancelling out the first sub in spots. You'll have to make adjustments. The other thought is to move one between the bookshelf and the desk. It will be about 1/3 into the room. You can cheat the angle some towards the seating position. Don't think of this as your last attempt. This is the part where you can have some fun tweaking.

Hi to you JamesK8 and Mr. Audio and thanks so much for your help. I spent the morning moving Sub 1 (Sub 2 off of course) and no spot would be "the spot" (giving the nice bass I get when I sit on the purple chair. Bizarre, this kind of rumbling bass is only heard when you stand at the left of the Sub). So I did as Mr. Audio suggests: I stack them. I can do it since they are same brand and model. This works great and I hear much more loudy and rumbling bass. To my ear, it's about 75% of the kind of bass I get when I'm in the purple chair, which is a huge step forward let me tell you. Later, I will try placing the sub where I sit and move around it. I'll see which placement is best. BTW, what makes this method so reliable? Thanks again. Karmin.

Unfortunately the biggest culprit is the grey couch up against the back wall. You are unlikely to ever get the most accurate bass in that seat.

Thanks mojomike but I'd like so much to know why it's the biggest culprit. Excuse my ignorance but if you'd share this information, maybe it would give me the go to move the furniture too!! K.

You may want to begin over by placing your mains where you have your subs at now. Your mains should be as far apart as you are from them. If that distance is 10' your mains should be ~10' apart. Your 'sound stage' may not project properly with those speakers that far apart.

I agree with shutting off one sub. Try placing one in a corrner.

As for mojomike's suggestion about the listening position (grey couch) being the wrong place for proper a sub setup, I agree. Its a bit difficult to explain. You have on the left a fairly good area for subwoofer sound and none on the right, its open. Sound reflecting off the walls in the larger area on the right will reach you after the sound reflected off the left side. Sort of an echo chamber. You might want to try placing one sub in the far right hand corner. Subs tend to work best when set in a corner. Or try it under the computer desk.

The best setup seems to be for your tv/speakers/sub to be placed agaist the wall where you have that bookcase. Position your sofa as far from the speakers as the mains are from each other. Use one sub and place it intitialy in the r/h corner with 1-2' clearance on either side. L shaped rooms are a bitch. Subs are usually set up in the r/h side because classical music is set that way. The higher noted instruments such as violins and flutes will be centered. The violas are almost always on the extreme r/h side. Many rock/country bands have followed this same setup.

Yeah, I know, you can't rearrange right now.

When you sit close to a wall because of the way bass frequencies tend to pile up near room boundaries, it can make the bass boomy, but doesn't usually allow for a flat frequency response.

Another bad seat is smack in the middle of the room.

also remember, when you choose a spot for your sub(s), don't give up right away if it doesn't sound good....moving the sub just 1 foot can yield different results, especially in non-treated rooms. Also consider the direction the woofers are firing...that can be equally important.

Hi to everyone who gave their soooo important point of view and information. Today Sunday 14, I finally found the best spot for the Sub 1 after moving the furniture around and/or moving the Sub 1 all over the place. It's now sitting under the desk (see pic) and it gives real great bass. I also placed the Sub 1 just in front of the grey couch in front of me as I was sitting on the couoch. The sound was very very good indeed. But I was not ready to let the Sub 1 sit in the middle of the place. Transform it in a coffe table. I thought of it but liquid spills and scratches and all. Not for me. I thank you so much all of you for your incredible help. Without it, I wouldn't have had the guts and the mean to do it. This forum rocks. Pass the word. Cheers and love to you all good people of AVS. :):)

This is not at all technical observation but man your room is shaped funny.
