I am not smart when it comes to setting up audio components. I've searched around the site and some FAQ but haven't tracked down a specific answer. Recently I purchased a Sony STR-DG720 audio receiver and I am attempting to setup surround sound with my DirecTV receiver. In my DTV menu, I have two options for surround sound output; RCA and Digital Audio. I was told today that it is not possible to input surround sound to my receiver using analog (red and white) RCA audio inputs. Do I have to use Digital Audio to achieve surround sound? Why does DirecTV give RCA's as an option when it isn't possible? (I am aware that the program via DirecTV must have a Dolby Digital signal broadcasted with it and not all programs will be in surround sound)

I hope this isnt a horribly ridiculous question. My mom is already disappointed..

Ok, of course I just found an answer in another thread. Seems Dolby Digital cannot be sent through analog RCA's.. If I couldnt tell by the fact that they are analog RCA's and im trying to transmit a digital audio signal..

Anyway, second question. Can I use any thicker RCA cable for a digital audio cable? I have a few meant for composite video that i thought might work?

For Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1 you have to use optical or coax. The best "surround" you can get with analog (red/white) is DolbyProLogic. Surround, but not optimal.

I bet you didn't search very long. :)

And another answer found easily if you research before posting...
composite (yellow) cable will be dandy for digital audio.

My sincerest apologies. I should know better after being a member of several car forums. At least you got an opportunity to put the newb in his place. :D

I will better familiarize myself with the 'Search' feature.
