Hello,

Just got the Sony 46V4100 (wow do I love this TV), and it looks great. However, I played a DVD for the first time and was not very impressed at all with the picture quality.

My DVD player is a Sony DVP-NS755V, a progressive scan player with component output that I bought in 2002.

My question is this, would an up converting or blueray player make standard DVD's look much better than what I am seeing now? I thought I read that the TV has to upconvert the signal, and should do just as good of a job as an upconverting player. I'm currently running the player in progressive scan mode, would it be better to leave it interlaced and let the display deinterlace?

Thanks!
Nick

Many people swear by Oppo DVD players. They say the upconverting does actually make the picture look better. Personally I've got a older ('06) Sony non upconvert and a new Sony 700 something upconvert player. I've got the step up TV from you:cool: the 46W4100 and other than the conveyance of the HDMI cable and automatic switching I really don't notice much of a difference in PQ between the 2. Don't get me wrong I really like my Sony players for their features and if playing a good quality DVD I think the PQ is quite good, I just wouldn't really say my upconverter has much better PQ than the non-upconverter.

Maybe I'm already an HD snob then, but I thought my standard def DVD's just looked awful.

Your not going to notice a big difference between upconverting players unless you dish out the money. I suggest either get a Bluray player with better than average upconverting or save up for a top of the line DVD player so you never have to make another upgrade again. It is usually cheaper in the long run to spend more upfront. ;)

Some of the better Bluray players, for upconversion, are:

Pioneer 51FD
PS3
Oppo BDP-83
Any Samsung with the Reon chip
LG BH200
Denon 3800

Unfortunetly, the PS3 is probably the cheapest of that list. I think the best bang for the buck would probably be the new Panasonic BD35. It's not quite in the same level as those I listed above, but it is supposed to be better than average.

Then, of course, there's the Oppo 983, which is probably THE best upconverting DVD player available. Not to mention all it's other features... It is also MUCH cheaper than the players it contends with.

Well, I had a buddy of mine stop by with his PS3 last night. After a bit of video games, I popped in the same disc I had been using on my DVD player.

I noticed a HUGE difference in picture quality. Way less noise in the video.

I'm sold on the PS3, now I just have to sell the wife....
