OK, I know this is a little odd, but I need a new DVD player for the family room and I'm considering the Pany DMP-BD35K, which is a BD player that apparently upconverts SD DVDs quite well. The unit would play DVDs exclusively for the time being. I'll probably add a BD player to the theater sometime in the next year or so, and at that point it would be nice to be able to play BD discs on either machine. Given the screen size in the family room (50" Pany plasma) and the viewing distance (about 10 feet), I don't expect BD to be a huge improvement over a good SD DVD image in that space.

The other alternative I'm considering is the Oppo 981HD. The 983 is more than I want to spend on a DVD player.

Anybody have any advice for me? I'd be particularly interested in hearing from someone who has seen upconverted SD DVDs on the DMP-BD35K. Thanks!
