Are there any DVD players out yet or coming in the near future that will upconvert Divx files to 720p or 1080p?

I have an Oppo 970, but it doesn't do Divx files any greater than 720 x 480.

You mean read divx files with HD resolution, right? Everything the Oppo plays is upconverted.

Here is a search page with DivxHD checked: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers?DVDname=&Search=Search&dvdportable=&dvdchanger=&dvdtv=&mpeg4hd=1&chipset=&orderby=Name&hits=50&Submit2=Search

The hits are pretty obscure models. You might have better luck using a PC.

Or: Blu-ray players are more likely to be able read HD files. Keep an eye on the Oppo BDP-83, coming soon.

PS3 can read DivX-HD and upconvert regular DivX up to 1080p.

but afaik, neither the ps 3, nor any other BD player can play .mkv files, which is the most popular container for most x.264 (HD avi) files. the memorex (and probably the PS3) can handle .mkv files that are changed to .ts files. see the memorex 2510 thread for info

The problem with Memorex is it's a POS. If you need mkv or 264 then use HTPC.

Will the PS3 upconvert regular avi divx files that you download through torrents? I guess I'm looking for a dvd player that upconverts regular Divx files to 1080p.

Don't they all do that? By "all" I mean all players that read divx files and support 1080p output.

You're not expecting a new realm of image quality doing this, are you?

No, none of them do that from what I've researched. Oppo seems to have the highest upconversion pixel rate for Divx files and that is 720 x 480. I don't know about the PS3 though, I didn't even know it played Divx files. I'm not talking about HD Divx files since most uploaders don't use them.

It seems like there would be some type of DVD player that upconverted Divx files to the same upconverted resolution as DVDs (720p or 1080p).

Again, maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but I think any upconverting player that reads divx files will display them at the supported output resolutions of the player.

ALL divx players that can do 1080p will upconvert to 1080p but it won't be as pretty as real DVD upconversion or HD-DivX. Even the $40 Phillips 5990 will upconvert regular DivX to 1080p as does Oppo and PS3.

No, they don't. I've e-mailed companies and the output resolution isn't the same for Divx files as they are for DVDs. This is an e-mail I received from Oppo...

"Ash,

All of our players support the upconversion of DivX and XviD files which are a native resolution no greater than 720x480 pixels."

You need to read that again. It states that the player can read files up to 480, and that it upscales them. "Native" means that is the resolution of the file. The player upscales and outputs 1080.

Ok, I was dead wrong then. Sorry. Thanks for setting me straight.

The Oppo and Phillips player I have still doesn't look very good for Divx files. Even DVD's burnt to Divx looks sup-par. Hopefully HD-Divx will catch on with Torrents TV shows.

You really should get a Networked Media Tank (something Sigma SMP8634-based) if you want to view DivX 6 HD files. NMTs play them really well (as well as MKV's and pretty much everything else you can throw at them).

Look into the Popcorn Hour A110 or the eGreat EG-M31B/EG-M32B or similar models. If you don't care about networking, consider the Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player.

GIGO. The PQ depends on the quality of the file. Bitrate and resolution.
