I want my mother to be able to record tv shows again since her old one died. So I bought one of those newer ones that don't have a tuner in them. It says I must use a cable box or something and that it is only line in.

Well she has the cable wire going directly to her tv right now. With her old vcr recorder we had the cable going to the vcr then up to the tv and it recorded fine. But now it doesn't work that way anymore apparently due to new ones being digital with no tuner. So my question is how the heck do I get this thing to record tv?? Can I run the cable to the tv and have a composite(yellow, white, red) going from tv out to vcr in? She doesn't have a cable or set top box like the directions say.

Just get her one with a tuner, they still make them. Take the other back if you can. Even if you can get it to record via analog video input, the VCR will be almost useless except for playback. It won't be able to record when the TV is not on or record from a different channel (if you use a splitter).
