Wondering if anyone else has tried this. Due to WAF and space issues. I decided to try out a 3.1 setup. F C L and Sub. I'm running a 45tx receiver but guess what? No 3.1 setting. It does allow to turn off the surround speakers in the setup process, but there is no surround sound decoding for a 3.1 setup.

I figured this wouldn't be a problem, but the system sounds a little odd. Voices come in loud and clear, and the sub looks to be pulling it's weight, but the midrange seems way laid back in comparison to the vocals. Vocals are prominent, other sounds seem distant.

I seem to get some improvement in stereo direct mode. What am I doing wrong?

I know two issues is that the speakers are much closer together than they should be and I may try to fix that issue.

Also, I have a long skinny room. approx. 16 x 27 with 12ft and higher ceiling, sloping. I only expect the sound to really work for half that room, it's a living dining combo.

Any idea on what else could be done to fix this problem. Or is this part of that mirage sound?

I do know that my old Denon receiver didn't sound very good in anything less than 5.1. I used to run with no center and the Denon ran the left and right and pure stereo with a tiny bit of surrounds. My Yamaha does not do that. My Yamaha sounds much better with less speakers that my Denon did. Not that I need to use less because I'm running 7.1, but I experimented with the Yamaha when I got it with less speakers. Apparently all receivers do not act the same when steering sound from one channel to the others. If the receiver is not the issue though, check your speaker levels and make sure they are even with each other. Just as importantly make sure the distance settings are adjusted properly. Normally if your center is set too close, you will have a lack of midbass. If it is set too far the sound can lose midrange. I'm not gonna tell you that if any of these three things happen to be a factor and you fix it that you will be blown away by the results. After all it is just 3.1. I would try to get more creative to get some surrounds in the back. Those Omnisats are pretty small.

...............but guess what? No 3.1 setting. It does allow to turn off the surround speakers in the setup process, but there is no surround sound decoding for a 3.1 setup. If you instruct the receiver that there are no surround speakers, then it will properly reroute the surround info to the front speakers. Hence, it will be set up for "3.1". There is no "3.1 setting".

Have you set ALL the other settings appropriately in the receiver? All speakers set to SMALL? What crossover setting are you using? Have you calibrated properly?

The 45tx has the auto calibration feature which I've run. So it should be setup properly from that sense. I do probably need to experiment with speaker placement, ATM it's limited due to the room setup. Christmas tree :) In need some bookshelves.

I have the crossover set to 80hz, the speakers is supposed to be capable of 70hz.

I have the crossover set to 80hz, the speakers is supposed to be capable of 70hz.If the auto-calibration set the crossover to 80Hz, then that is probably OK. If it set a higher one, you should probably use what the auto-cal chose.

And even if 80Hz is what the auto-cal chose, with a low-end capability of only 70Hz, you may want to experiment with higher crossover settings. Which Omnisats do you have?

I have the crossover set to 80hz, the speakers is supposed to be capable of 70hz. My front speakers are capable of 32Hz, and they are crossed over at 100Hz. It's not always what your speakers are capable of. It's what your speakers are capable of in the room and placement they are in. You need to set the crossover a little more by ear and not so much by paper.

The original omnipolar omnisat v1.And is 80Hz the crossover setting that your auto-cal chose? Or did you manually choose that?

Not sure, I had the system do the auto cal, I'm guessing it did. I don't know that there's anything special you have to do to tell the receiver not to.
