Hello,
While at Circuit City tonight I picked up a Sony DVP-NS700H/B to watch DVDs on to reduce the use of my Playstation 3. While the picture wasn't trash, it was less than desirable--yes, I am running HDMI cables. :D
While reading this forum (keeping my personal budget in mind) it seems the Toshiba XDE500 is the safest bet. Would you expect I would see better results with the Toshiba? Is this a good DVD player for the money ($100)?

I like it, give it a try.

Do you believe it'd out-perform the Sony DVP-NS700H/B?

I don't have the Sony. If you're happy with it`why bother. I thought you were dissatisfied and that was why you were asking.
I have the Sony but not the Toshiba. IMO the Sony is about as good as I've seen. Now as far as what I've seen it would be: other Sonys(upconverting and non upconverters) Panasonic players and DVDRs (some upconverting some not) and other various cheap players which definitely lacked the clarity of the Pannys or Sonys.
Many people rave about the Oppos as well as the better BR players for best upconversion. I've not tried them personally but would think unless you went that route most of the other name brand players would be similar and the cheapo specials would be a step down.
No standard DVD player is going to rival OTA HD or a good HD BR disc but should be better than any OTA SD. I'm happy with my Sony 700, I really like the feature set.

I'm not satisfied, I was just trying to see if it's any better or I should ditch both ideas.

My choice is Toshiba XDE500 which is having Solid DVD playback performance with extended definition (XDE) disabled; can play DivX, MP3, and WMA files burned on CDs and DVDs; can output DVD in 24 frames per second.BUt it has Overloaded remote control and Box has strange rattling sound.

That "strange rattling sound" may be indicative of something having come loose in transit. When I received my Toshiba HD-A3 HDDVD player last year I could here something loose inside when I moved it. I opened the case and discovered that the heat sink had come unglued from the top of the CPU and was loose in the case. I reseated it and have had no problems since.

I have both players and can say that the xde500 is a big step up from the ns700h because the latter has excessive edge enhancement, even when the sharpness is turned off. The only other inexpensive player that I like is the Philips 5990, but I've noticed red push on that player.
That Toshiba player is amazing, I've had a nice Oppo player before and I have my ps3 but I think I favor the xde over them. The picture is sharp (even when all features are turned off), the best pseudo-HD I've ever seen (not on all dvds though).

The rule about XDE: the better DVD mastering quality is, the further XDE pulls ahead from the rest of the upconverting players. [at least from reasonably priced ones]. For lousy DVD transfers, keep XDE enhancements off.
