Okay, so my Sony KV-34XBR800 had died and I found this wonderful forum with the answers that let me fix it myself. I thought I would see if anybody has the answer to another question.

I've been using my TV as a second monitor for my computer for a good couple of years now (good for watching video) and am curious if there is any way to improve my connections. The current setup is as follows:

ATI Radeon HD2600 Pro DVI output with DVI to component adapter
Component cable to Denon 3805 receiver
Component cable to TV

The resolution is set to 1680x1050, so presumably it is 1080i.

When I was repairing the TV, I noted that it has a DVI input (had forgotten it was there, quite honestly). Is that DVI connector the same as the one on the video card, allowing a direct connection? And would it give me a better (i.e. digital) picture over the component cables?

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Depends on what has better DACs, the TV or video card. On my 970 component looks better using a Radeon X1800. Its the other way on the PS3.

Hmm, how would I go about figuring that out? Trial and error? I'm off to see what the web says.

It's kind of a diminishing returns thing because with a big widescreen CRT your convergence can only be so good. Even if you hook up the best theoretical cable combination, you'll still have some blurriness and color push on the left and right edges. And text will never be as clear as you want it. I've been there/done that with my XBR970.
