Good Morning , I have a problem trying to record programs from my hdtv(sony 46 )to my Sony vxd655 recorder , I have Dish satillite with a dvr 722 I have the 722 connected to the tv via hdmi cable,(hdmi 1) then I have the recorder vxd655 connected to the tv via hdmi cable (hdmi2) When I got the recorder I ran the setup and it recognizes the digital and analog channels .
Now on the remote on the tv I go to hdmi 2 (that is where the recorder is) and then on the recorders remote I select the broadcast(digital or analog)then i press the buttons to select the channel to record and press set and then i select the recording mode. my problem is when I try to set up the channel I get a fussy picture of that channel and it flashes that is when I set it for analog when i select digital it says no signal I have been working on this for the four days and i can't seem to figure it out , maybe it is a defective unit . Maybe some one can get me out of the mess thanking you in advance

How is your Sony VXD655 connected to the ViP722 DVR? Or are you trying to record from an off-air antenna instead?

If you want use the Sony recorder to record from the DVR, it must be connected to another output on the ViP722 DVR, such as composite (yellow RCA jack) or s-video. It would then record whatever you see on the TV screen from the DVR.

You cannot use your DVD recorder to record a different satellite program from that which is currently tuned. DVD recorders are not able to tune satellite channels on their own; they can only record the output from another satellite box.

Sony VXD655 does have an ATSC tuner, so it can record from an off-air antenna (not the same thing as a satellite dish). That off-air antenna must be directly connected to the DVD recorder. You can't connect the antenna to your TV, and then expect to record from the TV.

Some TVs have composite audio/video outputs but I don't believe the recent Sonys do. Besides for that to work your TV needs to be on and tuned to the same channel you want to record from.
As bfdtv said your best bet is to take composite or S-video and audio out of your VIP to feed your DVDR. If you want to record OTA then you'll probably want to get a CECB, the CM-7000 works quite good and should be <$20 with a govt. coupon. That or return your Sony and get a DVDR with a built in digital tuner.

Hi,
I thank you for your help, If you read my problem real carefully , this is the way the recorder instructions tell me how it suppose to hook up, but one thing I noticed on the recorder ,the blue light for hdmi is not lite maybe thats why the tv says no signal This has a hdtv tuner atse/ntsc/Qam tuner what ever that means, I thought this had a digital tuner.I believe I am in uncharter waters right now

NTSC = analog tuner for cable or off-air analog channels
ATSC = digital tuner for off-air digital channels from an antenna
QAM = digital tuner for unencrypted digital channels from a cable provider

None of those does anything for satellite. No boxes have built-in satellite tuners except those you buy from Dish Network.

I think you misunderstood the directions that came with the product. You correctly have the VXD655 connected to your Sony TV with HDMI -- that allows you to view a DVD on the VXD655, but it doesn't allow you to watch digital channels or record. You need to connect one of the following to the VXD655 to actually record: (1) coax from an off-air antenna, (2) coax from your cable provider, or (3) composite or s-video output from the DVR. Which of these three are you using?

Until you connect one of those three, you will get a "fussy picture" on analog channels and no signal on digital channels.

I heard that if the recorders have HDCP enabled you won't be able to record anything HD, the above link will help to overpass the HDCP. If only analog , not sure.

Dish ViP722 DVR
two coax cables from wall to DVR

HDMI out to HDMI-1 on TV

Composite video and stereo audio

If you don't care about PIP on DVR:

composite video (yellow) and stereo (red and white) RCA connections from [2] out to input on Sony recorder

This option will let you watch or record one channel on the Dish ViP722 while you watch or record something else on the Sony VXD655. It may require you to enable TV2 output in settings on the Dish ViP722 DVR.

If you do care about PIP on DVR:

composite video (yellow) and stereo (red and white) RCA connections from [1] out to input on Sony recorder

Sony VXD655

HDMI out to HDMI-2 on TV

composite video (yellow) and stereo (red and white) RCA in from the Dish ViP722 DVR

After you do that, you may need to hit an 'input' button on the Sony DVD recorder remote to select the right input.

There are basically two ways to use the Sony recorder. The first is to connect coax from a traditional off-air antenna or cable provider (it sounds like you have neither of those). The second is to connect the RCA inputs to the RCA outputs from a satellite box. The Sony recorder must provide some method to select one of these two choices, either through settings or an input button of some kind.
