View Full Version : how high should i mount the TV in cathedral ceiling?
this is a large common room,
this picture is of the back side of the house.
the entry way, dining room, and kitchen are on the front of this room.
they have a normal ceiling
the back half of the room has the cathedral ceiling running the full length.
our current CRT TV is at the other end, in an entertainment center, that would not fit on this end.
so now, i have all the furniture arranged to face the wrong end, so I will have to deal with that.
anyways, got a Panasonic THpz50 something (can't remember the rest of the alphabet soup part number)
how far above the mantle would you place it?
the ceiling looks to be in the way, that's false because this picture is from the alcove at the other end, and you would not normally stand there to watch TV, you would be in the room a few feet further
dimensions:
mantle is 52 inches (4.5 feet) tall
mantle is 6 feet wide
ceiling peak is 13.5 feet off floor,
ceiling peak is 9 feet above mantle
wall is 13.5 feet wide
TV specs:
Dimensions (H x W x D) 30.6'' x 49.4'' x 3.7''
Weight (lbs.) w/Stand 88.2 lbs
JonyHouse 12-21-08, 10:01 PM If you have to put it above the fireplace, put it as low as you can. It will be pretty high for viewing from a seated position and especially if you are laying down relaxing.
Asherizm 12-21-08, 10:03 PM I wouldn't put it above the fireplace. IMHO it would be uncomfortable to watch that high. I can't see in the picture but I'm guessing there's another window near the computer desk. Put it in between them with the middle of the screen as close to eye level while seated as you can.
JonyHouse 12-21-08, 10:09 PM here is how low I have mine in the living room.
Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic

Is there any reason why you want to mount the TV over the fireplace? The higher you mount the TV the more awkward it will be to watch. Will the new TV not fit in the old console?

no, it's about 2 inches to big.
it's the "bee's knee's" to mount a TV over the fireplace around here, because you don't really use the fireplace that much (was ~75 yesterday)
i have never heard about mounting it too high till got on this forum. i guess i need to read more.
we have a sectional with recliners on either end.
i was thinking fat people would just flop on them, lay their head on the back, and gaze up into the TV until they needed more donuts (or pizza)
ummm. but what if the wifey lays out flat?
she lays her head on the arm of the couch, and lays across it a lot.
she may have to look up some.
you guys got me confuddled now.
keep the advice coming, the mount won't be here for a few days

It is only the bee's knee's to the uninformed! Welcome to the forum where you get your eyes opened to the "real world" of electronic bliss. Those that think the mounting over the fireplace is the bee's knee's are the ones who think that Bose is the pinnacle of sound and speaker technology!
If you don't use the fireplace then mount the TV in the fireplace opening and you'll solve all of your problems. Oh please don't brag about the temp being 75 when I'm here with temp in the single digits with the wind chill in the -20 degree range, it is just plain irritating! Just kidding. What type of mount are you using could you provide a link? If it is a tilting mount that will help somewhat but won't alleviate all the issues. Is there a possibility of replacing the old entertainment center with a new one specifically designed for a flat panel TV. That could be another viable option.

i talked to a guy in best buy who had mix & match speakers last week, he was mixing Bose & Polk, i never did get him to understand he was jacking up his surround field because of the different design paradigms of the speakers. he was old codger, said he was half deaf anyways (hearing aids both ears) and they were all paid for, so was good enough. but he had two 52 inch TV's, (just replaced one that was not 24p).
i know what you mean about the cold, the preset buttons on my motorcycle would not work this morning, it was 37, but i still rode in.
froze to death, but i enjoyed it.
okay, lemme ask, my assumption would be that you want the TV at eye level, so you don't have to look up, and stretch your neck.
what other basic reason is there to mount it low?
in a small room, i can agree, because of the angle.
however, i am trying to put the couch 10 feet away, and another loveseat behind the couch, at ~15 feet.
i guess i did this the wrong time of year, because the wife had all her Christmas stuff on the mantle, so she demanded 12 inches above the mantle to be able to decorate.
