I just got through DOA: Dead or Alive on Blu-ray courtesy of TF1 Video France. It's region locked to B, but what a fun popcorn flick. How can you not like beautiful women who kick a**? The story is improbable and borrows from Enter the Dragon as well as all those fighting games (like DOA in which this is loosely based). This disc like all TF1 Blu-rays I've seen uses forced French subtitles when you choose original English audio (in dts HD MA 5.1). However thanks to AnyDVD, I was able to watch this with subtitles turned off. The video is encoded in AVC. The disc is 25GB SL, but with the movie only being 84 minutes long, there's plenty of space for a high bitrate encode. I'll let the pictures do the talking.:D

Click on the pictures to see them in full 1080P lossless format. You may have to click on the image couple times to see them in full size. The images are direct computer capture.

It's funny that you started this thread. I watched an HD trailer for this movie not even an hour ago, and thought that it would be fun to watch on Blu-ray.

Yikes, the price for this BD is quite high. There's no way I'm spending about as much on this movie as I did on the French Connection I and II UK imports. :p

I can never get enough of watching hot women kick the **** out of Ninjas etc. ;)

We need more "Leave the brain at the door" popcorn Martial Arts movies like this.

xradman- Can you post the BDInfo for this, and any other imports you have?? Thanks!

I'm very thrilled for you that you are able to play other region movies.

Congrats.

OTOH, the URL you posted is incredibly bizarre.

Done on the first post.

Thanks, looks good. Odd that alot of imports are done at 24fps rather than the proper 23.976fps.

Well, 24 fps is actually the proper speed.

23.976 is due to stupid NTSC compatibility.

One day we might divorce ourselves from that legacy but apparently this was not the time...

Maybe that's why I was running into audio sync with ReClock. I had to turn it off to keep the movie in sync.

Will buy a BD, when it becomes reasonably priced.

I'm not even a fan of the Dead or Alive games and I know that Devon Aoki does not in the slightest way fit the character of Kasumi.

That said, I saw this movie on rented DVD awhile back and I fail to see why I could even want to own it on DVD, much less Blu-ray disc. There are plenty of superior videogame movies out there these days, and I'm not talking about Uwe Boll films either. DOA: Dead or Alive is better than Uwe Boll's tripe at least, but that's still not saying a whole hell of a lot.

When I look at a movie like this, I'm not looking at acting or the story. If the fight choreography is good, actors/actresses pretty, and scenery decent, it's good enough for me. I had very low expectation for this movie and I was pleasantly surprised. The nice PQ and AQ was also an unexpected bonus. I also liked the fact that it only lasted 87 minutes and didn't expect anyone to take it for anything more than a superficial game advertisement.

Since Street Fighter 2 is a great game but had a crappy movie perhaps since DOA is a crappy game the movie will be good. I'm willing to give it a rental to find out :)

Wonder how this French Blu compares to this other (Spanish?) Blu? the Blu compared on this linked thread never seemed much of an upgrade sadly, I expected an amazing difference for a colourful new film. Its obviously better than the dvd, but not as big as I wanted.

http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleiche/index.php?vergleich=dead_or_alive

Mind you the films exactly what I expected, really solid fights and wonderful scenery with fun in it. Best thing about it is the fact its the real actors doing a lot of the best fights. Holly Vallance is esspecially good at the slo mo fighting, some bad doubles at the end mind you for certain people, but all in all the films great entertainment.

Blu Ray would be mine if it was cheaper and a big difference with some extras worth watching!

My captures are direct lossless captures off the disc. It's little tough to make a comparison with the Spanish Blu-ray since the scenes are different, but I think the French one is better.

The French BD looks better to me. Sharper and a tad more saturated colors.
