Hi folks,

I was at IKEA last night picking up a couple of items that I needed for the Holidays. I came accross their shade section and I saw some shades of various sizes. They had a black shade which was typical black vynil on the inside but the revealing side had more of velvet/flat black finish.

The sign indicated that they are light blocking and that they can be cut to size to fit your window.

The reason I post this thread is that they have a plastic chain on the side in order to raise and lower them. The 24" model was only 15 bucks and it looked like it would be a great solution for a vertical masking system. It can be manual or if you want, you can use the "add a motor" or something similar to
automate it. It can be wall or ceiling mounted.

I would love to try this out but since I have a curved screen I don't think it would be flush enough. Hopefully someone is looking for a simple vertical solution and this might just fit the bill.

Here is a link to the product. Unfortunately it is not available online.

You'd be surprised what some of the folks here have found at IKEA. I'm definately stopping back over there to get some lighting for my equipment closet. They offer quite a few options for me.

Also some folks have been using the LED light strips from there for backlighting their display's to help eye strain. Similar to the ambilight displays sharp had come out with.

:D Once I finalize things I'll look for a solution. My best thought at the moment though is curtains that come in to mask to 16:9. I don't have much space on the sides for curtain stack to do a full close. If I'm able to flex the curtain rod just a bit to hug the screen at the edges I should be good. :)

I'm stopping by IKEA to check this out. If it looks like it'll work with my 2.35:1 pulldown screen, I'll buy two and try mounting this weekend. Will report back.

Up until now, I was going to try this approach (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1083120), but these shades seems like a more elegant solution.

Check the other widths. My local Ikea didn't have 24" but did have some other widths. Just cut the shades down to the width you need. Just a thought.
