I own and enjoy the upscaled SD DVD of 'Gangs Of New York' (though visibly flawed), and have consequent interest in the BD. Is it a reasonable upgrade? If not, what is the likelihood of Buena Vista coming up with a higher PQ release? I took advantage of their re-release of one of the 'Pirates...' BD (a framing issue), but it doesn't seem clear GofNY will be accorded the same attention :(!

It's the same flawed DVD master at a higher resolution with smeary DNR added. I'd have trouble recommending the Blu-ray to someone that didn't own the movie at all, let alone to someone who already has it on DVD.

So far, Buena Vista has ignored all complaints about the debacle that is Gangs of New York on Blu-ray.

Well, the Pirates framing issue was in an entirely different league than the problems with GONY. All they had to do for Pirates was just go back to the master and get the correct framing for a few shots. I doubt they even had to do any work with the film print.

GONY needs a whole new transfer, and that costs a lot more money. I think they'll do it eventually, but it could take a while.

Thanks guys -- I appreciate your evaluation! Although I was looking forward to the BD release of GofNY, it sounds like I should table it :(! A darned shame -- I consider it a very decent film and the SD DVD is suggestive of a potentially top flight PQ! Still, if the studio isn't willing to follow through (even on a fairly recent release), then I guess we're stuck :(
