It's no Warlords, I'll tell you now. I found it to be pretty bad. Especially the end. I saw it in China with questionable English subtitles. But hey, you might like it!

Don't buy it! IMO it sucked badly.
I won't even rent it... borrow the dvd from a friend or something.
Zhao Xun looks stunning though.

did you mean Zhao Wei or Zou Xun?

based on the opinions so far and the imdb rating, think i'll skip this one.

It just seemed repetitive to me. Of the Chinese movies I have seen in China which numbers maybe 5 or 6, Warlords and Assembly were of the highest quality. And I just judge all of them next to those two. Maybe I am too harsh.

You can rent the original from Netflix. The remake just recently showed up as coming soon from them also.

Sorry I meant Zhou Xun. I like the combination of her cute face and her somewhat dark voice hehe.
I never liked Zhao Wei.

Not a terrible film, but forgettable. It at least tries to tell its story instead of being a series of vignettes to display stars in a favourable light. The fact that said story is basic, and largely relies on laughable misunderstandings to advance the plot, doesn't help. More than that, though, it's the actors who fail to bring out any of the emotion or tragedy in their characters. Zhou Xun being the notable exception, she's in a league of her own in this one. Had they all been as good, Hua Pi could have been a great adaptation from a liaozhai zhiyi story. You can tell the source has much more to offer by creating interesting conflicts. As it is, the tragedy remains locked away behind Donnie Yen's awkward smile. I miss Leslie...

Wouldn't recommend to buy it on blu, although you may enjoy it and not feel your time was wasted.
