View Full Version : What do you guys think about HOME?

Man I've been waiting for HOME so long and now that the beta is finally here, I personally think it sucks!!! My passion for HOME faded away because they took so long to come out with it. Everything about it shows how not well made it is with the mic problems and lagging issues. So what do you guys think? Am I the only one that has this mentality about HOME, I hope not!

There are several threads already on this (although they've fallen off the first page because it's old news by now).

Nearly everyone thinks it sucks.

Really? I seem to remember pretty much universal hatred, peppered by "it has potential, but how it stands now is sucky" posts. Memory must be going bad in my old age.

The number of people in any given instance of Home suggests a decent number of people like it. I enjoy the pool game, that's usually what I'm up to whenever I'm in it.

The voices of bituminous hatred are just louder. But according to our poll thread, opinion's pretty much even.

If you saw "universal hatred," you are really just seeing what you want to see.

If you go back, you'll notice that the people who have a problem with it really enjoy repeating their disdain over and over and over and over again.

And, to the thread starter--do a search, for crying out loud.

And, to the thread starter--do a search, for crying out loud.

To be fair, "Home" doesn't bring up anything PS3-related when creating a new thread. He would have to type something like "Playstation Home" to get any kind of relevant threads.

Alternatively, he could try doing a search for "vile," "putrid," "stinking pile of horse ****," and he'd probably find more than a few threads on Home. Not sure why, but Home brings out the very best in folks. :D

Once I finally got on it, the first thing I did was try to bowl, only to find that somehow all the lanes (all 5 of them) were full. In a virtual world WTF?

Then I saw a guy sitting down directly in front of another avatar, nodding his head (imagine what that looks like). That is when I realized that there is a VERY GOOD REASON why Nintendo and MS have kept their online interactions to a certain abstract minimum :P

In it's current state it's poorly implemented, far too limited, and a touch buggy. With that said you can have fun in home, which to me suggests it has potential... But I'm not sure it'll ever reach it.

I've been in Home a little bit, for me I haven't found a reason to stay in for long at any one time but I go and play the arcades sometimes when I only have a few minutes. Also, it's been pretty well populated every time I've gone in. It's still a beta, they have alot of things to work on. Once it has integration with popular games I think it will become useful to a wider group.
One thing that I think it should do is have a real time census for all games so you could see what is being played, where the online action is, which you could tie into the game launch mechanism. Also they need to get the game spaces up so people can gather and launch into a game together, much like how some avs'rs do for Burnout or Warhawk.

Don't have too much of an opinion because I haven't tried it. The whole concept just doesn't appeal to me. When I want social interaction, I leave my house and go out into the real world. Don't need to do it online. :)

But forum posting is more "now and then" and not non-stop like HOME is supposed to be. I guess I'm not a huge fan of online play either. (Yes, I'm a minority in that apsect).

I went to the mall and noticed they were charging $0.49 for stuff...that was all I needed to know. I won't pay Microsoft to play online, and I sure as heck won't be nickel & dimed in a virtual environment, especially not in this economic climate.

I was pretty disappointed because I expected it to be much better. I assumed it was at least going to have functionality similar to an MMORPG, but it doesn't.

Final Fantasy XI on the PS2 is more polished, functional and social than Home on the PS3, which doesn't seem right considering the PS3's considerably better technology. Of course you do have to pay for FFXI. Maybe it's all about servers?

I don't know. They could have done much better though. I'm not sure what took so damn long to get it out if this is all we got.

Well Sony was pretty clear that it was not a "game". Hype was Home's greatest enemy.

Have you guys tried the flying couch bug to get outside your apartments yet?

There is a faily detailed world outside you aparement. All around are building that have windows w/ hallways in them. However your apartment is floating in mid air.

All this extra stuff maybe a sign of what took them so long to develope home and what is to become.

Basically what you do is you move your couch near the door and keep spinning it. Eventually it pops out on the other side of the door. Now you can fly it all around the HOME city. You can even put the couch on your roofl, then walk around untill you are under it at which point you'll get the option to sit on it and you'll be sitting on top of your apartment!

Be warned... I did thes then walked off the roof... I fell forever. I had to exit the game to get back the aparment.

Yeah, I knew it wasn't game, I just expected the ability of moving around the environment to at least be on par with a standard MMORPG, but it's not even close. Loading characters and going to the next map takes forever.

My connection is much faster (12mb/s vs 768kb/s) than it was when I was playing FFXI and yet it feels much slower in all these environments.

That kind of clunkiness and lack of things to do are turning people off.

I also think the point is that half the people either liked home, or (being that it's still "beta" without all it's features turned on) believed it had real potential to be useful based on what was available at this point. That would mean that even though they might not find a use for it now, they have a positive opinion of the feature in general.

The other half did not like it or see any potential.

Im guessing that the thread will die or get locked soon so...

I love home. I spent approx 6-8 hours a week on it. Its mindnumbingly dull most of the time, thats probably the number one reason its easy to spend hours on it, but the other 20% of the time its actually hilarious and fun. The other night I logged on to see how my friend had decorated his apartment, he was all excited to show me his new table and samurai swords lol, it was about 12:30am and he was playing echochrome. I started playing it too until he was done, we talked for a min and he said he was logging off. I didnt get to his apartment. For some reason I feel the need to go back to my apt before logging out. So as I was walking back thru the bowling alley I saw an open pool table and started playing, thinking I'll just mess around and go to bed in like 10 mins. An hour later, after playing about 6 games I realized that I was being rediculous and went to bed. Home doesnt have to be about doing something 100% of the time, to me its just something to do when Im bored, and it fills that spot better than a game that I have to devote serious time to. Im not the kinda gamer that can say, Oh Im gonna jump on R2 or Valkyria or Crash commando for 10 mins then go to bed. Home fills that void for me.

In one of the other Home threads, I dropped a bit of knowledge that I was actually a breakthru for me as I typed it. i likened home now to the ps3 itself back in 1st quarter 2007. I was pretty proud of myself but I cant find it now so I never found out if anyone agreed with me (isnt that bad that Im looking for someone to agree with me?)

Time is the ultimate test for Home. They seem to update it very infrequently, so now that it's been out a few weeks now, do you find yourself still going back to it?

It was interesting and "new" at first, but in the end there is nothing that brings me back to it.

I think this generation was too early for something like Home. I can see what they were trying to do with it, but it just fails miserably. Once again Sony bet the farm on something that isn't going to get them any further in this console war.

I think sony would have been better just copying the 360's online model more. Everything from acheivements to how the interface works. The trophy system flat out sucks, home is a total bore, and their online is still nothing like MS/360. Just seems like a lot of time and money lost on something not worthwhile.

And I don't really think Sony has "bet the farm" on Home. It's obviously an experiment. If anything, they bet the farm on Bluray.

Sony has went on record as saying they will heavily support Home for years. That's probably why someone would feel they are "betting the farm" on it.
