Is there any device you would recommend over the Popcorn Hour A-110?
My primary goal is to play H.264 .MKV files at 1080p. My AVR does not decode TrueHD or DTS-MA.

only 2 knocks i've found on the pch:
1. it runs a little hot with some hard drives, other NMT have more aluminium or a fan and these are presumed to run a little cooler
2. cannot power on/off with the remote control, i'm unsure if any other NMT's can do this
Thank you, does anybody else have a recommendation?

None of the other NMT's can decode DTS-HD MA.
which tracks have DTS-HD only and therefore cannot be played on other players?

depends how important for you is _full_ support of Bluray rips (with all the functions of real BD discs) and playback of commercial Bluray discs of any region. This is not supported by NMT. Check this:

more expensive of course, but it's really _much_ more than Popcorn. TrueHD and DTS-MA are supported, 7.1 analog output is there. Also h/w upgradable (extension miniPCI slot and backside panel for changable connectors): can choose WiFi ver. n, Gbit or 2 x eSATA ports in addition.
This is the most important what I like. The rest you can check on Hi-Jack's site if you want...
The only real drawback here: need to connect HDDs to this model via USB.
If it's bad for you HDI has also Dune HD Center model which addresses this issue: http://www.hdi.co.il/fullhd_players/67-dune_hd_center.html
(the same f/w, but totally different design and HDD which can be instered inside like via mobile rack, with hot swap)
But more expensive...
