View Full Version : Whats my 40XBR800 worth?? freddy14 12-30-08, 07:43 PM I need to sell my 40XBR800. Is there still a market for these tv's or am I stuck with it. It looks and performs like the day I bought it. Thanks... dr.whatshisname 12-30-08, 08:44 PM You could probably get something out of that. Since that has the first two letters KV not KD it is not HD or Digital capable. Not really a market, you can only get money by selling for parts. Lucky if sellable. jdre 12-30-08, 09:28 PM It is an HDTV, if provided with right signals (satellite, cable box, etc.) through DVI or Component. Try Craigslist or local newspaper classifieds to sell. I'd try 400 range to start. freddy14 12-30-08, 11:42 PM Thanks jdre. It's DEFINATELY an HDTV. I believe it's the KV-40XBR800 if my memory is correct. tomahawktim 12-31-08, 02:28 PM The major hurdle for selling this unit is delivery. If there is any way that you can help the buyer with the move, you will generate more interest. Where are you located? raouliii 12-31-08, 02:55 PM Thanks jdre. It's DEFINATELY an HDTV. I believe it's the KV-40XBR800 if my memory is correct. You are correct. The 4:3 40XBR was the largest Sony made and have been sought after by many. freddy14 12-31-08, 04:27 PM The major hurdle for selling this unit is delivery. If there is any way that you can help the buyer with the move, you will generate more interest. Where are you located? South Florida. Miami to be exact. And yes, they are HEAVY!! WJonathan 12-31-08, 08:20 PM You'll need time to sell it, because of the weight. Few people want to adopt the George Muresan of CRTs. If you have a few months, the right buyer will happily give you $300-$400, but if you have to get rid of it immediately you might have to Goodwill it. freddy14 01-01-09, 12:53 AM Yeah, I was afraid of that. I guess Im gonna have to wait for the right person who's specifically looking for this set. I dont want to give it away either. It really has a nice picture. Especially in HD. I had my 34XBR800 up for 2 months, not one email. Then boom, someone came along and paid $300 cash the same day and took it. Another guy in Boston just sold his identical TV for $50, cause he didn't want to wait. I shoulda bought it. :) You can ask $400, but I think it's only worth $300. freddy14 01-01-09, 10:12 AM You can ask $400, but I think it's only worth $300.[/QUOTE] Wow! Talk about depreciation.........:D madpirahna 01-02-09, 11:03 AM I'm paying $500 for my second 40XBR800 (it's for my Mom...really!!!). It's got the stand, as well. I'm sure it'll be worth every penny I pay for it. I really love the picture these put out. freddy14 01-02-09, 02:53 PM Hey Mad, I have a custom built, solid maple entertainment center that was built around the 40. Come down to Miami and buy it and I'll give you your 3rd 40XBR for free:D!!!! cajieboy 01-05-09, 10:28 PM Hey Mad, I have a custom built, solid maple entertainment center that was built around the 40. Come down to Miami and buy it and I'll give you your 3rd 40XBR for free:D!!!! Got any pics?? I already own one of these 40XBR's w/Sony Stand. I'd like to see that custom maple Ent. Center. On my 40XBR, I get pristine near-perfect PQ that can ony be matched by a Pioneer Kuro. Paid $3000 for mine in late Dec. 2002. Shame the market is gone for large Tubes, as these were at the very best & the pinnacle of CRT video tech. I've seen them go for various prices between $300-$500 depending on condition & w/Sony Stand. madpirahna 01-05-09, 11:08 PM Hey Mad, I have a custom built, solid maple entertainment center that was built around the 40. I'm not in the market for another tv right now...but my Mom IS getting one of my 40 XBR800's. And for the price they're going for on Craigslist, I can always find it in my budget for another one. Right now, I'm glad I live in Atlanta...there are so many choices here. bruman 01-07-09, 09:43 AM it is a shame there is no market for these. they are very heavy but I have yet to see a flat panel that beats the image I have. sure, not big but you cannot beat the image quality. I paid $1000 new for my 36XBR800. never bought the stand as it was too much. a year later I walk into CC and they are selling my stand for $17, glad I waited. the detail just canot be beat. I have a 32XBR I got for free, it doesnt get much use but will be a good spare for when I need it if ever. I have 3 tube HDTV's......lol, what beasts. VarmintCong 01-07-09, 11:50 AM it is a shame there is no market for these. they are very heavy but I have yet to see a flat panel that beats the image I have. sure, not big but you cannot beat the image quality. Well, one reason they look so good is cause they're small, and 32" flat panels aren't particularly good. A good 50" plasma has better picture quality, it's just not readily apparent cause the image is blown up quadruple the size. I think it was a bit of a mistake for me to ditch the 34" XBR for a 46" LCD, but I have to leave the TV for the inlaws in a year, and they wanted something wall mountable. freddy14 01-23-09, 05:42 PM Pictures dont do it justice.....http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=130896&stc=1&d=1232750285 http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=130898&stc=1&d=1232750285 Lovemy36XBR800 01-23-09, 07:47 PM Pictures dont do it justice.....http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=130896&stc=1&d=1232750285 http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=130898&stc=1&d=1232750285 you want to sell a 300 lbs tv with NO STAND. do you have any idea how hard it is to find a stand that will hold that monster SAFELY? even if you can find one rated for 300lbs I'd still worry about the heavy glass used on the picture tube and having it tip over. freddy14 01-23-09, 11:40 PM you want to sell a 300 lbs tv with NO STAND. do you have any idea how hard it is to find a stand that will hold that monster SAFELY? even if you can find one rated for 300lbs I'd still worry about the heavy glass used on the picture tube and having it tip over. Lovemy36XBR800 01-24-09, 09:30 AM The TV is on a stand and of course I would include the stand..... ok that's good. I see them on CL ranging from a low of $250 to a high of $700. It's going to be a bear to move. I'll never forget lifting my 240lb Sony up from the stand for the first time and then to the Styrofoam blocks. yes the former owner kept the blocks and box so we were lucky in that area. madpirahna 01-25-09, 11:00 PM That is very nice!! I am impressed!! If I ever pick up one without the stand, I'd hope to come across something that nice to hold it. That's just amazing!! freddy14 01-25-09, 11:39 PM Thanks. It was pretty expensive to have it made. Im advertising it locally to include my 40 for free if they buy the entertainment center. cajieboy 02-04-09, 01:45 AM Thanks. That's such a beautiful custom cabinet, you might think about re-purposing that entertainment center and converting it into some sort of super cool liquor cabinet, w/nice crystal glasses, decanters, etc...just a thought. I give this advice because I know "used" furniture, custom or not, sells for pennies on the dollar. Take for for instance, a few days ago I went on our local Craig's List and there was for sale an excellent condition 2004 Pioneer Elite 63" RPTV for $450. Now, I'm very familiar w/this model as I looked at it new in 2004 at Tweeters. The TV sold for $7500, had a gloss piano black wood cabinet, and was the very best CRT RPTV you could possibly buy. It was Pioneer's last RPTV they ever made. See, pennies on the dollar for "used". I've looked into similar models some of them had a MSRP of $15K! do you know how expensive the bulbs are for any RPTV? it has 5 year old bulbs. they can go any time or get damaged during the move that would be a nightmare at best. even if it were free. If you don't have a truck with a lift gate that goes all the way to the pavement just try to get 4 STRONG men to lift that sucker. yes they do have wheels but that only helps to a point. that's the elephant in the room. the move. cajieboy 02-04-09, 02:54 PM I've looked into similar models some of them had a MSRP of $15K! do you know how expensive the bulbs are for any RPTV? it has 5 year old bulbs. they can go any time or get damaged during the move that would be a nightmare at best. even if it were free. About the same for moving a baby grand piano. That's the way I look at it. You park that thing and leave it there. Period. Check out that thread on the RPTV Forum titled "Don't Dump That CRT RPTV". Lots of helpful info. Getting one of these huge top tier CRT RPTV's is a cheap solution & inexpensive way of getting a big screen and having super PQ to boot. If you are trying to save money in this time of bad economy, etc. this may be an option for some. I know I've thought about it a few times myself. PS: Concerning bulbs, there are deals on Ebay, etc. to get them. My brother-in-law has an 7 year-old Mits Diamond Series 55" CRT HDTV w/built-in HD tuner for OAR. The TV is used every day and he hasn't changed his bulb once. That ain't bad. Lovemy36XBR800 02-04-09, 04:57 PM About the same for moving a baby grand piano. That's the way I look at it. For $50 anyone can rent a U-Haul Truck w/hydraulic lift for a day. If your $450 RPTV goes out on you, then you're really not out that much if you decide not to fix it. Not much of a gamble, really. Compare that $450 super PQ 63" Pioneer Elite CRT RPTV with a brand new 60" Pioneer Elite Plasma that goes for $5500. I think the scales just got tipped by $5,000. Like I said, buying used can be an option for some folks, but like buying a used car you have to use some common sense and have a buyer's beware attitude. The ISF Calibration alone cost more than $400! It's deals like these that I've been noticing over the past year. People are koo-koo for cocoa puffs over thin flat panel TV's, and want to dump their beautifully expensive CRT RPTV's because they've gone out of fashion & style. You know, once you add a decent size credenza that will store your DVD, cable box, PS3, Wii, etc. the actual "footprint" of this HT setup will be pretty close to those large CRT RPTV's. Makes me want to consider this being "used" a viable option. bruman 02-06-09, 06:36 AM thats a great deal and the pic still looks very nice. people can rave all they want about new sets, from what I have seen on friends new plasmas and lcd I am not sold. swifty7 02-06-09, 11:14 AM this the thread I've been looking for.
