View Full Version : New Dune Prime streamer and blu-ray player from HDi
I haven't found anything about HD Base 3.0 via google.
After seeing the videos of the PCH C200, I'm undecided between the two.
The PCH C-200 is still 150$ less than HD Base 2.0 and seems more powerful. ( I don't need an optical drive.)
I'll wait for a review of both product I guess.

sorry. you are right. it seems this info is not public yet. I heard about these models from one of the distributors. He told 3.0 models will be shown first time at IFA Berlin this year (September) and will be available for buying more or less the same time as C-200...
thanks for the info :) I'll wait then.
cHarOn99 08-22-09, 04:41 AM lol we will see, that are just rumours without any background :D
lol we will see, that are just rumours without any background :D
just a couple of weeks before IFA... and we'll see ...
anyway as C-200 will not arrive before October (in mass quantities, not just demo samples), we'll loose nothing while waiting...
johnagr 08-22-09, 07:19 AM I was watching about HDI and the new PCH C-200 too but i will buy the C-200. With the new info and videos about it i dont have any doubt , maybe HDI will come with the new 8643 but i dont think so that is ready to sale in October , in this moment HDI 3.0 doesnt exist for the masses... , anyway you looks like a HDI salesman :D

it's up to you what to think, of course. I only provide the info I have, as it seems not so many know all this at the moment and I really like the products of this brand, I owned 3 different models during the last 3 years (Dune HD One, Dune HD Ultra and now Dune BD Prime 1.0)
just carefully check all the possibilities and chose the best for you.
And besides, in any case the new Dune products will be based on 8642 chip, not on 8643 one.
8643 one doesn't support Blu-ray playback (at least legally, as it doesn't support CSS and Macrovision).
I don't know why Popcorn tells that they use 8643 and support Blu-ray at the same time.
If this is really true then it should have some limitations, especially for analog video output.

Kostya,
Am I reading this correctly? You are saying a BD Prime 3 is due out this year, yet the BD Prime 2 isn't out yet...
Confused...

hmm.. this is really confusing. my idea is that they number in the same way the devices with totally the same platform. Like the first version of HD Base and BD Prime was totally the same inside, only different casing and Prime has BD drive, Base has HDD.
2.0 was meant to be a new platform (and again equivalent by electronics) for both lines still on 8634 chip. 3.0 is meant to be a version with Sigma 8642 chip. Previously they told through MPC Club that they were going to make these new models on 8642 only in the end of the year, if not later. But it seems something changed their plan. I think it was Popcorn: they anounces their C-200 much much earlier than they really could put it to market. I can imagine that this anouncement alone damaged sales of any products on [now outdated] 8634/5 chip.
The version 2.0 will be on market, but it seems for a very limited time... (at least Base 2.0 will be definitely sold in EU and Russia starting from the next week, according to the news, but Prime 2.0 seems to be skipped)
So think about this: Base 2.0 will be on market, Prime 2.0 is skipped.
What would be the version of the players on 8642 chip? Base 3.0 and Prime 2.0!? THAT would be really confusing! So it seems they will be both 3.0...
At least this is my idea on what's going on.
MickeyDora 08-22-09, 11:24 AM Yeah, don't be surprised if the 2.0 series is skipped altogether and turns into the 3.0 series.
Here (http://forum.hdtv.ru/index.php?showtopic=1853&st=520&p=18047&#entry18047) is unpacking of base 2.0 and photos of insides.

GotHDTV? 08-24-09, 03:39 PM They had better inform their resellers if they are going to skip Prime 2.0. DC still still slating to sell it next week (if they get them).
I guess I could wait if it has a better chipset in Prime 3.0, but I have the Prime 2.0 on preorder.

Ok. I am officially confused. So does this mean, if I have a Prime 2.0 on pre-order, that is not going to ship and I will have to wait until after October and order the Prime 3.0.

Can you have HDI add to the firmware vote list the following:
1. Zoom options: 1/2; 1/3; and 1/4
2. FLV file format playback capability
Thanks

I have heard rumors that something will be announced in early Sept.

if I understand correctly the best (and maybe the only) way to ask HDI about it is to write your suggestion here: http://dune-hd.com/index.php?do=feedback

maybe your reseller automatically converts your order to Prime 3.0. But you better ask the reseller. Besides, we are talking here not about "after" October but after September, i.e. the beginning of October (according to the current info I have).
Kostya you have either saved me $$$ which I was going to spend in two days time on a c-200 or have made me miss the first batch (sept 3rd) of c-200. Personally I hope it is the former:)
I always wanted a blu-ray nmt to replace my htpc but dune refused to use a decent chip until now.
1) Do you know if the new dune 3.0 can run something similar to this?
random xbmc video from youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-hn0ZIL-lg
The c-200 still uses html and looks like something from the '80s compared to media portal/xbmc/w7mc/etc. I use on my htpc.
2) Also do you know if the dune 3.0 will get a nicer chassis? The c-200/older dune models cannot be compared to CE equipment just yet.
3) All dune players use a fan while none of the pch devices do. Will this be fixed in the new dune 3.0 player?
4) Will the new dune 3.0 use an RF remote like the c-200 does?
Thanks.

again, I hope it's really clear what I mean: I don't agitate for Dune, I just suggest to wait a bit and see the comparison when both are on the market and then to decide what's the best for you. I just think it's a pity to be in rush and maybe to loose much better possibility just because of a few days difference in the first mass production time... (besides, during the coming month C-200 will not be available in a real mass quantity. before 31st of September Popcorn will not do more than 1000 pcs in total. they told it openly to all the distributors already)

which decent chips do you mean here? it's quite interesting
1) Do you know if the new dune 3.0 can run something similar to this?
random xbmc video from youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-hn0ZIL-lg
yea, right. everybody uses this kind of idea everywhere now... maybe Dune will use it too some day. I don't know. Up to now didn't see anything like this in any competitive devices too
The c-200 still uses html and looks like something from the '80s compared to media portal/xbmc/w7mc/etc. I use on my htpc.

no idea. but I don't think it will be a real Hi-End. It seems now they want to go into real masses, so they needed to make something cheap. For really nice casing you would need to pay maybe a few grands... (talking about real Hi-End with Blu-ray)
3) All dune players use a fan while none of the pch devices do. Will this be fixed in the new dune 3.0 player?
as I know, Prime 3.0 will not have a fan for sure. But I don't know about HD Base 3.0
4) Will the new dune 3.0 use an RF remote like the c-200 does?
Thanks.
no. I didn't hear about such plans. indeed, RF stuff add quite some to the expenses of the manufacturer. So I'm sure, to make the devices cheaper they wouldn't have RF remotes. But this is about the basic set. Maybe they will add something later with USB dongle (receiver), I don't know.

Thanks. I tried to email them at the above url, but I got a PHP error message. Any idea of what that means.
Do you by chance have their email address.
Dropthedime2009 08-26-09, 01:55 AM So the prime 2.0 is skipped..... And the prime will now be a 3.0? And you know this how? Here is how.
I read mpc everyday, and as these posts looked more and more like and ad from dune, I started to dig. The email address for this account contains the letters DKV. This must be the same DKV from the mpc club, and listed on that profile as HDI staff. Come on..... Did no one else notice this?
Look further and the domain name on the account here HDTV.ru and registered to a person. This name has 13 other domain names, one of them being dune.ru, and another is dune-hd.com. Funny stuff!!!

here is the public info on 3.0 at IFA:
http://www.virtualmarket.ifa-berlin.de/index.php5?id=170232&highlight=hdi&fid=631&offset=0&Action=showCompany
(just do searching at IFA site for "HDI" and will come to this page directly!)
Very simple source of info. The rest is well known by any Dune distributors and not all of them keep this info in secret... (though I'm not even sure if it is really a secret :) )
Concernig email, hmmm.... how would you even know my email? maybe you have some administrative privilages here and can see internal database of this forum? (right, a guy who is just registered and somehow decided to write the very first message exactly on this topic...)
if interested, my email contains "kostya" and has nothing to do with "dkv" .
so the rest of the story is also a BS...
Besides, what would be a reason for a newcomer as you to fight with this info anyway? Any deals with Popcorn/Syabas?
Thanks Kostya for the replies.
Ofcourse it is better to wait. I waited from June. You did the correct thing to inform us.
Personally I do not like the 863x chips. I even prefer the (infamous) realtek chips. My xtremer boots much faster, plays photos much faster, plays music much better, has a much better looking and much snappier/smoother UI than a friends a-110.
The 864x is set to fix that. It is about five better than the 863x series. On the c-200 forums a user has posted videos. The interface is still poor but much, much quicker than a-110, although there is still lag/jumps in some of the videos when pressing the remote keys (see lcd display video).
About the interface, xbox has been running xbmc for years and xbox is a ten year old technology. I'm surprised how poor the UI for nmt/media players are. I don't know if you have an htpc but the interfaces on those, makes the nmt look like they are running dos in w7 era. I don't know why nobody else is bothered.
No need to go a few grands for a nice chassis. This beatifully crafted denon bd-player costs 700usd (you probably pay half for the name and half for the components inside:)) I don't like cheap feeling/looking devices but unfortunately that is what most people want:( http://www.trustedreviews.com/images/article/inline/11484-dbp2010big.jpg
Great news about the BD Prime not having a fan! This makes the most difference in Quality of Life. I hate fans with a passion and love silent/zero noise devices.
Too bad about the lack of RF remote. This was a very brave move by pch and I much respect them for that since noone else bothered. IR remotes are crap unless you spend $$$ on harmony. RF works without line of sight, hell it works from the garden, the upstairs bedroom and the kitchen:D
The c-200 still uses html and looks like something from the '80s compared to media portal/xbmc/w7mc/etc. I use on my htpc.
And Supports Flash....to what extent is still under wraps but this will be a tremendous feature on the C200 assuming its done correctly...I guess 1 more month of tomorrow.
Chers,

Dropthedime2009 08-26-09, 10:37 PM Kostya, I just look at your public profile on AVS. It said your Home Page. hd-movies.ru
So I went to home page but, it was not working. I did a who-is to see if it valid domain and I saw it was registered to* KONSTANTIN V DYSHLEVOI with email address kostya-dkv
dkv sound failure to me and I remembered DKV user of MPC Club. So I google KONSTANTIN V DYSHLEVOI and find same name on registration for HDI website and many others! How do you explain?
I pre order Dune Prime 2.0 since I have bad experience with NMT players in past. I have been reading AVS for years and this news of no Prime 2.0 shipping upset me. So I sign up for forum. Since you know so much about HDI product I look at your profile. I find HDI pretend to be user on AVS? For what reason to sell more players and bad mouth all other player?
I find HDI pretend to be user on AVS? For what reason to sell more players and bad mouth all other player?
Oh, please... you have just 2 posts and they're BOTH busting Kostya. It's all you've done! "For what reason" are YOU here?
Kostya, I just look at your public profile on AVS. It said your Home Page. hd-movies.ru...
yea. very clever. that site belonged to me in 2002 when I was registered here! (right, I didn't change the registration for all this time).
after that time it was sold by me and several times by others. and I don't care who it belongs to now. (it seems it's not even supported by the current owner)
but anyway your motivation of any such "researches" and creating these stories is very obvious (seems not only to me).
So I'll just ignore your posts.
Indeed, I wonder why you are still not deleted by any moderator here for doing such things...
if you didn't notice, people are talking here about player features, not like you... (do you care of the topic at all? it doesn't seem like you do)
And Supports Flash....to what extent is still under wraps but this will be a tremendous feature on the C200 assuming its done correctly...I guess 1 more month of tomorrow.
Chers,
Requis
but you know, "supporting Flash" and "Using Flash" is not the same thing. let's see to what extent it will be really _used_ in the both players
Kostya,
Do you have any specs on the 3.0? Other than the chip is there any other differences between the 2.0 and the 3.0.
Is the new chip better than the old one.
Thanks!
the new chip is obviously better. you can see it from Sigma Designs site just comparing the specs:
http://www.sigmadesigns.com/Products/SMP8630/pdf_files/bluray8634_br.pdf
http://www.sigmadesigns.com/Products/SMP8640/pdf_files/bluray8642_br.pdf
Just the speed is more than twice better. Also bigger memory support (for sure both PCH and Dune will use much more than in the previous models).
Because of the faster and more efficient chip old heavy things will work much faster (like Java in Blu-ray) and some new "heavy" things will be added, like Flash.
But of course, for playing any ordinary conents it should not be different. This part mostly depends on the features available from each firmware developer.
For the concrete specs of Dune 3.0 devices let's wait a bit. I'm sure they will be published during IFA or even before. Not so long to wait
Thanks Kostya for the replies.

sorry, but everything you are talking here is just about GUI, and not about a chip. For 863X you are only comparing with A-110, but the GUI in all the PCH solutions is a Web-browser based! It's extremely heavy approach! of course it is very slow, even slower on C-200 (with 8643 chip) than on old Dune players on 8634 chip (I checked head to head, it's definitely the case).
Dune firmware developers do it on a very low lever (directly working with frame buffer, it can not be lower), that's how they achieve this speed.
I suppose the xtremer GUI also uses some lower lever libraries, so it's not as slow as PCH 100/110/200.
But of course Sigma chips (esp. 864x ones) in general are much more powerful than Realtek ones. It should be obvious in Java, Flash and other heavy applications...
the new chip is obviously better. you can see it from Sigma Designs site just comparing the specs:
Just the speed is more than twice better.
Talking about the speed, the old chip had a 300MHz CPU clock the new one has according to the website a 333MHz + 666MHz CPU clock.
Does this mean:
a) the new chip has two cores? (two seperate datapaths?) OR
b) the new chip runs on 333MHz clock in and uses a clockdoubler inside so the core runs on 666MHz?
I find the given data from Sigma incomplete and confusing.
Anyway I agree that the chip will be a step forward, how big I will have to wait and see, if it will play 1:1 bluray data without stuttering I will be very pleased ;)

it's a kind of dual core. faster one (667MHz) is a "normal" processor playing video and so on, another one (333MHz) is secure co-processor which is mostly used for decrypting copyright-protected data, according to my understanding
wiatrak 08-30-09, 12:18 PM In fact, 8642/43 has three cores (not including 3x333 MHz Audio DSPs) ;)
1. 666 MHz MIPS CPU+FPU
2. 333 MHz MIPS IPU
3. 333 MHz security CPU

on the logic level it's definitely correct. But who knows how it's really implemented physically. In any case it seems to be quite complex and powerful solution...

Can someone tell me if for the analog 7.1 output there are options for speaker type/distance/crossover/level?
Thanks in advance!
no, you can't control it like this with a player. for this stuff you still need an A/V receiver. Though with the 7.1 output you can use some old receiver just with analog input, no need to buy a new expensive one for all those HD Audio formats decoding...
spexman 08-31-09, 01:03 AM ok, thanks Kostya!
Killroy™ 09-01-09, 02:03 AM Dune 3.0 announced. (Dune 2.0 scrapped): http://www.mpcclub.com/temp/dune_ifa.jpg
So happy I didn't order that c-200 (too close).
Check for more details on mpcclub the dune prime 3.0 is so much better.
Two must haves of c-200 were fanless operation and rf remote and the dune has them both.
I didn't like the look of the c-200 (exposed bd-drive), I don't like the look of the dune either (very cheap looking) but alot better than c-200.
The rf in the dune works with all the rf remotes unlike the c-200.
The dune supports multichannel flac unlike the c-200.
The dune comes with a bd-rom unlike the c-200 which you have to buy for extra.
Price wise they are roughly the same.

From my understanding, all 2.0 orders will become 3.0 orders since the 2.0 was replaced.
RedSoxInHD 09-01-09, 10:21 AM The new player is now on there website.

FYI, the C-200 uses a mini-ITX motherboard, so you can use your own case.
...if it will play 1:1 bluray data without stuttering I will be very pleased ;)
The current players will do that...
The rf in the dune works with all the rf remotes unlike the c-200.
How is that possible? It has a 418Mhz and 433MHz receiver (most common RF frequencies) plus all of the uncommon ones used? Do you have a link?
The dune supports multichannel flac unlike the c-200.
I've never really used multi-channel FLAC What is the benefit of this? If I backup my blurays, what does multi-channel flac do for me?
The dune comes with a bd-rom unlike the c-200 which you have to buy for extra. Price wise they are roughly the same.
Is that the C-200 with or without a bluray drive?
Thanks,
CJ
CJO,
Yes you can use your own case but you have to pay for the c-200 case/lcd/powersupply/hd cage as well. This wasn't the "case" with the A-110. There was a B-110 motherboard only model.
"But if you want to control player with RF signals, this option will be
also available separately during Q4 2009. Our solution will be based on
Z-Wave RF standard (technology currently owned by Sigma Designs,
previously by Zensys), supported by some models of Logitech Harmony (890, 1000),
Philips Pronto and Nevo remotes. We'll also suggest a cheaper option of RF
remote under Dune brand.
With Z-Wave support any Dune 3.0 player will be able to serve as a center
of your very affordable Smart Home system."
Above quoted part taken from mpcclub. Syabas has said several times on their forums that their RF solution won't work with harmony RF remotes. You will need to purchase the additional IR module.
If you don't have or care for multichannel flac mkvs this doesn't matter in your case.
The dune comes with it's own bd-rom installed from the factory behind a hidden bezel as the picture suggests. The c-200 on the other hand you have to remove the external hard disk cage (rendering it useless) and then buy on your own a bd-rom and install it. The bd-rom will be exposed and won't match the colour/texture/etc. of the c-200. You will have an ugly computer "drive" in your living room with probably white lettering and an annoying constantly flashing led. Not a great solution as far as I am concerned.
CJO,
Yes you can use your own case but you have to pay for the c-200 case/lcd/powersupply/hd cage as well. This wasn't the "case" with the A-110. There was a B-110 motherboard only model..
I'm hoping that they will also, in the longer term, come out with a similar model for the C series.
"But if you want to control player with RF signals, this option will be also available separately during Q4 2009. Our solution will be based on Z-Wave RF standard (technology currently owned by Sigma Designs, previously by Zensys), supported by some models of Logitech Harmony (890, 1000), Philips Pronto and Nevo remotes. We'll also suggest a cheaper option of RF remote under Dune brand. With Z-Wave support any Dune 3.0 player will be able to serve as a center of your very affordable Smart Home system."

That's a good way of doing it, though, personally, it won't help with my Crestron system.

Just FYI, I don't think that they have ever said that, though I have said it on the NMT forums a number of times. I guess that it is possible (though I don't think probable) they they could also have a Z-Wave or Zigbee based system.

Thanks.

You had said that the price was comparable. I was just wondering if it was comparable between the Dune player and the C-200 with or without the added cost of a BluRay player?
Thanks,
CJ

Well from mpcclub:
retail price of BD Prime 3.0: in the interval of EUR 350-399 inc. VAT
price for c-200 is 350eur + ~70eur for bd rom = 420 eur
Then you have small variation depending on remote (or bd-rom in case of c-200). Prices are not final so can go a little up or down that is why I said they were comparable. If one was 350eur and the other 500eur for example...
as this thread initially had nothing to do with these new models, I think 3.0 ones deserve a separate thread. I collected all the info officially published during this day to a new thread. It's here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=17102333#post17102333
I invite everybody to continue discussion exactly on the 3.0 ones there.
Besides, don't miss the nearly direct comparison between Dune 3.0 and C-200 in the 3rd post (quoted from the press release on the Dune HD site):

maybe this staff would help(?):

not cheap though... but what's cheap if Crestron is touched? :)

I'm affraid they don't, according to statements on NMT forum. That is reason why C-200 uses ITX form PCB, for individual tweaking... They express themselves, not shipping C-210 (or whatever it would be named) is due to reducing production/logistic costs for two different products. They even wont sell PCB from C-200 without case, PSU etc, because it increasing logistic costs (another package etc); probably B-110 wasnt bestseller compared to A-110, they not delivered it anymore. On PCH site, now you could buy only refurbished B-110's.

Opentoe 10-26-09, 12:10 AM I have a cheap Ultio and I'm enjoying it NOW, not waiting months and months for a product that may or may not come out. Anyway, was real curious about this one because of the price. Having such a high price tag I was thinking it might have features that others do not. Apparently not.

what are you guys talking about here? I saw the Prime 3.0 and Base 3.0 at IFA (Berlin, Sept 2009). That was absolutely the first time when HDI announced and demonstrated these models. And already that time they were telling about the middle of November as the earliest for these models. Up to now this information is still not changed...
It really doesn't look like with C-200 where the first mass production was delayed for 4 months...
CCONKLIN1 10-26-09, 07:43 AM about the only thing i care about is the ability for a unit to play iso's from dvd's and Blu-rays. I do not car about ANYTHING else. Anything else is strictly bonus but the above is all I need...
Hopefully the Dune will do this without the issues that people are having with the c200.

Haha, I just responded to your "what gives" question concerning the Dune in the other thread. Didn't know you already ordered one. So you caved in, huh? :)

in the end they decided to give the Editor's Choice to the Prime 3.0. Not bad. If I remember correctly they don't give it that often. Saw only once before...

beatboy77 11-20-09, 03:37 PM Just spoke with Digital Connection. This has been delayed once again due to a drive issue with the BD drive. They will individually email each person on the pre-order list with an updated ETA within a couple of days.

Does this player have any option for speaker setup for 7.1 analog out? The manual is pretty much useless in this regard. Wondering how flexible the speaker setup is. Whats the difference between the Base & Prime model?

NAD XX5 MODEL LINE NOT COMPTABLE WITH THE DUNE PRIME 3
below is my post in the nad 175 official theard )
just to inform everyone who owns a nad 175 (non hd version )
the dune prime 3.0 which was just released is not compatiable with it when connected via HDMI outputting bitstream (not PCM mode) when playing a bluray disc you will get loud static noise (picture display is fine )
also if some one here has any ideas to sort this issue please do let me know
my firmware version is 1.16
also my ps3 bluray playback whenein all parameter being the same i.e the hdmi , cable , bluraydisc etc it works perfectly
regards
faiz
ps: this issue exists for all the nad model i.e 765,775,175,785 as i took the dune to my local dealer and they connected it to all of the above with same result whereas when the dune was hooked up to the denon it worked fine
I'm thinking about replacing both my Pioneer 51FD Blu Ray player AND my XBMC equipped XBOX with this machine. I know the Dune will play more formats than XBMC will but I'm curious how the software stands up against XBMC. Any opinions?
Go for it! Replace away. It works well enough.
