DigitalfreakNYC 01-02-09, 11:12 AM *** All of the following information comes courtesy of GizmoDVD and will be updated occasionally. Any errors should be addressed to him. They're all his fault. :) :) :)
Most of these releases sell for $12.95 - $17.95 and with the exchange rate, they only add up to a typical USA catalog release. Feel free to discuss any of these or any of the ones coming out. See Coupons at bottom of post. All titles are 1080p unless otherwise mentioned. I did make mention of 1080p titles if the cover art was wrong.

Tom Monahan 01-06-09, 08:00 PM These will play in our U.S. players? If yes, this is FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ToEhrIsHuman 01-06-09, 08:11 PM These will play in our U.S. players? If yes, this is FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes...all of North America is the same region.
The only problem is the Canucks replace all of the "ow" vowel sounds on the English language track to "oo", e.g. "what's that all aboot? please come in the hoose. isn't it cold oot there, eh?" oh, and they add alot of "eh's" to sentences too. the only alternative is a French Canadian track which is basically the same but in French. if you can deal with those issues then the discs should play fine on your U.S. system. :D
Hyp Toad 01-06-09, 08:26 PM I wonder how Seven will turn out? If it's cheap enough, I'll pick it up as long as it isn't a total disaster. Who knows how long it will be until it sees a Blu release from New Line/Warner. It's one of my favourites! (up here in Canada we also add "u" to a lot of words to insure they're spelled properly). ;)
Seven is one of the best movies ever, if its a good transfer I would pay whatever price they set it at.
Gary Murrell 01-06-09, 09:21 PM ***WARNING: this company is notorious for barebones releases. Buyer beware.
I thought people bought movies to watch the actual movie? :p

Imagine that, eh?
vanilla rice 01-06-09, 09:52 PM also beware of bilingual covers. there's a stupid law here that says discs with a french track has to have french packaging when sold in one of our provinces (states). some companies make separate packaging for that area, others just make the covers half english and half french for the entire country.

"Stupid" is a too gentle word... Just another good reason for custom covers! The funny thing is when I go to Paris, there are full of R1 releases, which are of course the US ones, in english only.
also beware of bilingual covers. there's a stupid law here that says discs with a french track has to have french packaging when sold in one of our provinces (states). some companies make separate packaging for that area, others just make the covers half english and half french for the entire country. That drives me absolutely insane. I speak both. I don't need to read the title in both languages. I think almost everyone in the country speaks English, most Quebeckers included. When immigrants come to this country they adapt to English. If necessary, they should make *fewer* copies with French, and charge extra for titles in Quebec. Wolfe won, Montcalm lost, and yet we are *still* promoting this as "multiculturalism". It's one of the 2 biggest reasons when our dollar was high I ordered exclusively from amazon.com and was willing to wait 2-3 weeks for titles to get here (obviously it being much more affordable was good too). Custom covers is the way I'm going to go regarding those titles that have both languages covering half the cover art. My own person OCD i guess.
ON topic, I haven't seen Seven, but have heard great things. Hopefully it's a great price like Sin City was, it will be a blind buy for me.
Dave Mack 01-07-09, 12:24 AM 21 grams. awesome!

Some people actually have the audacity to want to know more about the movies after watching them. :p
MSmith83 01-07-09, 12:33 AM I wonder how Seven will turn out?
Hopefully, it will be as good as one can reasonably imagine.
It will certainly be interesting to see how Traffic turns out. ;)
MidnightWatcher 01-07-09, 02:01 AM I think almost everyone in the country speaks English, most Quebeckers included.
Trust me, not every Canuck can speak English. And many Quebecois who can speak English won't do it. I've driven through Quebec pre-GPS days and mon Dieu, il y a beaucoup people who refuse to parle Anglais from tempts to temps. I grew up in New Brunswick, and there are even many there who can't speak English, or only very little. Get use to it after awhile I guess.
I've always liked having dvds in their native language cover included.
although in the case of canda both versions should be offered rather then both on one cover. either via a fliping cover or just sell two versions. based on sales one region might get more copys of one or the other..
I've only imported a few films from canada as the shiping to the USA is high and they require SOD when droped off. I don't have time to wait around the mail box on the apox. days.
anyway I've imported amélie and dans une galaxie pres de chez vous. both very good films. the amélie film had no subs at all on the BD. I don't understand why they won't atleast put the native subs on their. french would work for me.

As my in-laws in Vancouver informed me 25 years ago: REAL Canadians do speak english.:p
DigitalfreakNYC 01-07-09, 02:39 AM FYI..
The Alliance DVD releases of Se7en and Traffic were the 2 disc special editions. Traffic was the Criterion.
It would be HOT if we got both of those.
Mike Lang 01-07-09, 09:38 PM Let's lay off the generalizations & stereotypes guys...
Tom Monahan 01-08-09, 12:36 PM I ordered 3 of these titles with expediated shipping for 68.81 Canadian dollars. Using an online currency converter this comes to only 58 U.S. dollars. Is this correct?
Thanks,
Tom

Sounds about right. The exchange the other way the other day for me was 25%. So I paid $30 Cdn for something that was $24 US. Visa/banks/etc. take a few percentages either way on the exchange so it won't be exactly the same.
Grifter02 01-08-09, 01:57 PM Seed of Chucky is the theatrical cut, not the unrated cut Universal released, in case anyone cares. There's probably a good chance that The Butterfly Effect will be the same.

As a french from France, I was amazed the first time I came here, to see how people feel towards english... I'm gonna go back to France in a not-so-far future so at last I'll be able to use english words again in my french!;) :p ...But some people are really crazy in Quebec about the whole french/english issue. Sometimes, no disrespect, but it's utterly ridiculous. But that's another debate. I know my english is far from perfect when I speak/write, but as I understand it perfectly, I can't stand dubbed movies anyway, and bilingual covers (english on one side, french on the other would be fine though) look ugly on my shelves!
Whiggles 01-08-09, 02:21 PM 21 GRAMS, SE7EN and THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT will be mine. :)

Oh, hadn't thought of that. I'm crossing my fingers the director's cut will be present, but I won't be too surprised if it isn't.
KeithTalent 01-08-09, 02:28 PM 21 Grams, Se7en, and Rounders. Awesome! I've about worn out my Rounders disc. :o

Tom Monahan 01-08-09, 04:18 PM Folks who hate grain better stay away from 21 Grams. I have this on D-Theater and much of the film has heavy grain. Picture quality on the D-Theater tape is fantastic by the way. Time to put my tape on Ebay.

Sounds great to me - I just hope the BD matches the D-Theater tape, then.

It should look a tad better but DNR is a concern.
Just an FYI "The Constant Gardener" is already out as I found it on Tues for $19.99
Rachael Bellomy 01-08-09, 06:59 PM I like Cold Mountain, oui!
Tom Monahan 01-28-09, 11:19 PM Any specs on the feb 3 releases?

smfchris 02-01-09, 04:12 AM Just a heads up to those who might be interested in buying the Canadien release of Hostage on bluray> Dont do it! I ordered it from amazon.ca and when i got it and flipped this thing over, it turns out that this disc is 1080i! WTF! Thought all BD are supposed to be presented in 1080p. Not sure if I should open this disc up or try to return it.
Tim Glover 02-01-09, 10:20 AM Might be a misprint? I remember ordering the HD-DVD import of Mr. & Mrs. Smith and it was reported to have 1080i but it wasn't. Good luck!
tiger_qc 02-01-09, 12:11 PM The Butterfly Effect, Chasing Amy and Traispotting, Eh?!
I wish they won't mess them up like A Nightmare on Elm Street...
So far I only bought Sin City and Young People F***ing.
Chasing Amy is a pretty good news for all Kevin Smith's fans. We'll have pretty much all the titles avalaible in high def.
Clerks II (Feb. 3rd on Blu-Ray) (HD-DVD)
Chasing Amy (Blu-Ray)
Dogma (Blu-Ray)
Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back (Blu-Ray)
Mallrats (HD-DVD)
Zack & Miri Make a Porno (Feb. 3rd on Blu-Ray)
We're missing Clerks and...
Jersey Gilrl... (not so much)
Mallrats must get a Blu-Ray release too.
I'll wait to see some reviews of these before buying though...
I'm pretty sure some of these release will have heavy DNR, bad transfer and a very disapointing PQ.
I watched Young Poeple F***ing and I wasn't pleased with the PQ but it is watchable and the movie's funny enough to worth a buy from me.
I'll watch Sin City, but it's suppose to look and sound good according to this review (http://www.dvdactive.com/reviews/dvd/sin-city2.html).
mumbles3k 02-01-09, 12:43 PM They released JERSEY GIRL on HD DVD in Japan. I have it, and it's playable on American machines.
I will definitely cop CHASING AMY. I'd also like to get REINDEER GAMES, but is there any word on whether or not this is the director's cut?
tiger_qc 02-01-09, 12:53 PM They released JERSEY GIRL on HD DVD in Japan. I have it, and it's playable on American machines.
How much?
I'm a fan of The Machinist and paid $50 for the HD-DVD and just a bit under $70 for my Blu-Ray of T2!
Japanese highdef is expensive!
I'm a fan of Kevin Smith viewaskew's characters, I might buy Jersey Girl on blu-ray when will get an American or Canadian release if it's very cheap or I'll wait for the price to drop.
All this just because I'm a completist...
mumbles3k 02-01-09, 01:34 PM I got it a couple years ago when HD DVD first came out. Back then, I think it was about $40. If you can find it now, I imagine it would be a lot cheaper.

FYI, Both Jersey Girl and Mallrats is available on HD DVD. Clerks is the only Smith film to not have a HD release on either format.
DigitalfreakNYC 02-01-09, 03:22 PM Just a heads up to those who might be interested in buying the Canadien release of Hostage on bluray> Dont do it! I ordered it from amazon.ca and when i got it and flipped this thing over, it turns out that this disc is 1080i! WTF! Thought all BD are supposed to be presented in 1080p. Not sure if I should open this disc up or try to return it.
It's a misprint. Do a search.
aviators99 02-01-09, 04:33 PM Can someone tell me a site other than Amazon where I can order a Canadian BD? I'm in a bit of a dispute with them, and would rather use someone else.
Geoff D 02-01-09, 06:23 PM Chasing Amy, huh? I'm praying that they haven't simply dusted off an existing master, because the old Criterion DVD is grainy as ****. This is one movie that could really benefit from a new transfer and some judicious use of DNR, reducing the typically heavy 16mm grain instead of erasing it completely.
mumbles3k 02-01-09, 06:42 PM Unless the DP or the director are there to supervise, I'd rather just have them leave the grain alone. I actually like how this movie looks a lot.

I mentionned Mallrats in my post and Jersey Girl never had a domestic release. (like all the others)

I agree.

Yeah I checked bluray.com and it says its presented in 1080p. Looks like I should have went with the U.K. version but I think I'll go ahead and give this one a try.
Rachael Bellomy 02-02-09, 05:56 PM I preordered Cold Mountain but I have not gotten a shipping notice yet, today. I think it's releasing today. I'm anxious to get it, obviously. Maybe it won't actually ship for a few more days....???
Tom Monahan 02-02-09, 09:01 PM I just recieved a shipping notice for Cold Mountain, Good Will Hunting and 21 Grams using expediated shipping.:D
Tim Glover 02-02-09, 11:15 PM Hey Tom, I am looking forward to reading some of your thoughts on Good Will Hunting. An excellent film and one I would like to bury the non-anamorphic dvd!
Rachael Bellomy 02-03-09, 02:23 PM I got a shipping notice on Cold Mountain from Amazon Canada. The tracking isn't working for me. Maybe it's because I live in the Southeast Territory? It's a'comin'.
Whiggles 02-03-09, 02:33 PM My copy of 21 GRAMS shipped today as well. Really looking forward to revisiting this one. :)

You could have buried that non-anamorphic DVD about 7 years ago by ordering the Canadian one. ;)
Anyone get seven yet, a website had it up for sale in canada now.

That's not coming out for another month.
k1davis 02-04-09, 12:46 PM I'm wondering if anyone has any impressions of the 21 Grams BD. The film was quite grainy, seemingly by design, so I expect that from the disc, but I'm hoping that the BD will be a nice upgrade from the DVD I own.

I watched it yesterday, and I think it's a fine upgrade. If you're a fan of the film, I say go for it.
Rachael Bellomy 02-04-09, 03:45 PM The tracking finally came up for my copy of Cold Mountain. I've got about a week to wait. I quess it serves me right for livin' in the far off Southeast Territories.

looking forward in watching this one also.:)
Maybe this is proper thread to ask this ...
Does those Warner's Canadian Blu-ray DigiBook releases have bilingual booklet also?
Or is it just bilingual back cover and english booklet?

So far it's just the removable outside paper that has French on it on the ones I have and have seen. So the book itself and everything in it is English only.

Great news. Thanks!
chaingunsofdoom 02-05-09, 11:33 PM I have another one for the list: Passchendaele came out on Tuesday.
It's a Canadian drama/romance/WW1 movie written and directed by Paul Gross. I found a copy at WM here for C$29.83. It looks popular on Amazon.ca too (#1 now, #7 when I checked yesterday).
I never caught it at the theater, but I watched it last night. The main focus is on a relationship between a recently returned-home soldier (Paul Gross) and a nurse (Caroline Dhavernas). There are some bizarre things, like with the timeline, but it's a pretty good movie for it's supposedly 'low' budget of $20 million. I'd probably rate it around an 8/10. Running time is almost 2 hours. The PQ and AQ are both top-of-the-line. Being from Calgary where it was shot in and around, there were lots of great shots of the Foothills and mountains.
For extras: there's a ~45 minute "making-of" feature in HD. There's also the standard: teaser, trailer, tv commercials (all HD).
Talk about quick service they were meant to be here on Monday but got the butterfly effect and dusk till dawn, cool!

Rachael Bellomy 02-06-09, 12:58 PM My tracking wasn't the least bit accurate citing the 10th. Cold Mountain came today. I'm watching it tonight.

Thanks,

Tom, the Canadian Post handed it off to the U.S. Post. Maybe they figured lots of extra time into the delivery because of the unknown of what the Americans would do with it when they got it...? If there had been a major storm here or north of here, the 10th might have been in the ballpark...? Liberal quesstimation....? ;) :)
All I know is that Cold Mountain just bumped Sideways off to become tonight's feature presentation. Maybe I should start off with a Woody "wascaly" Woodpecker 'toon......I'm just fresh out'a Chilly Willie.
Tom Monahan 02-06-09, 02:33 PM Thanks so much for the help Rachael!!!!!!!
I'm glad U.S. Mail delivers so it may come tomorrow if not today.
I am dying to watch Cold Mountain in HD. Watched Sideways last night, love it, so CM will be watched as soon as it arrives.
Tom
Robert George 02-06-09, 02:41 PM I've sampled Good Will Hunting and Cold Mountain. No disappointments for me so far.
Good Will Hunting was one of the last laserdiscs I bought back in '97-'98. It was, as I recall, one of the best looking LD's I had seen. The following non-anamorphic DVD was only very slightly improved. The canuck Blu-ray appears to be either a master of the same vintage, or a more recent transfer of the same film element. This isn't necessarily bad, just not the "wow" HD experience one gets from the best Blu-rays. The image is not quite as sharp as I think it should be and some shots are a bit flat in the contrast. Overall, however, a good looking disc of a remarkably fine film.
Cold Mountain, on the other hand, is technically exceptional in every way. Clear, sharp, finely detailed, and still quite film-like in appearance. Colors are well balanced and black level is virtually perfect. First rate stuff here.
k1davis 02-06-09, 02:41 PM I just got 21 Grams & Young People F---ing. They arrived today (Friday) even though they were estimated to arrive next Tues. So now I'll get to enjoy them over the weekend. Plus the price on 21 Grams was excellent. So this won't be the last time I go this route.
Thanks everyone! This is an awesome forum.

Tim Glover 02-07-09, 01:30 PM Thanks for the summary on Good Will Hunting Robert! Wonderful film and I'm excited to have this on BD.
awesome! good will hunting out too. didnt saw this thread earlier. well consider cold mountian and good will hunting ordered :)
DCSholtis 02-07-09, 04:38 PM Chasing Amy pre ordered. :D
Tom Monahan 02-08-09, 07:12 PM The only real negative with the Good Will Hunting for me was some edge enhancement similar to Super Troopers. Some shots were flat as Robert stated but I bet this was just the way they were shot. Great movie!
As Robert stated, Cold Mountain looks terrific!
21 Grams looks great as well if you don't mind fairly heavy grain in parts. I'm very glad I sold my D-Theater tape to get this on blu-ray disc.
Thank you Canada for releasing these 3 fine films!!!!!!! Even with expediated shipping these 3 terrific films came to under 20 bucks a pop delivered to the States. No extras but it was great to pop in the disc and have the movie start with no pain in the ass menus.
Tom
Rachael Bellomy 02-08-09, 09:00 PM I'm just pleased with Cold Mountain. I already watched it twice. I'm so pleased I'd love to go on a Vancouver shopping spree.

The DVD had horrible DNR and edge enhancement. I take it that the Blu-ray is from a new transfer?

Whiggles 02-09-09, 07:11 PM Got my copy of 21 GRAMS today. Upon first glance, it looks like a solid, faithful transfer retaining the film's grainy, contrasty look.

I have a DVD of it but have not viewed it for years. I don't remember it looking wretched but hey our standards were lower back then, aye... My impression is that the BD is done up right. The audio is terrific in many scenes, the musical sequences particularly. I didn't see any sharpening jump out at me. Then again, I love the movie so much, it's hard for me to even ponder what's wrong with it whilst viewing it. I get a bit mesmerized, I confess!
It seemed good.....

The Cold Mountain DVD came out at the time when Disney was DNR'ing and Edge Enhancing the hell out of their transfers. It's up there with Gangs of New York and the first Pirates of the Carribbean among the worst-looking DVDs available.

My impression is that they went out of their way to make this one look good. I mean, I suspect it should have a bit more grain here and there. Looking for DNR is like playing the game show, "What You Can't See", aye. The audio is very pleasing. The big bang at the battle isn't up to the highest standards for big bang-o-motion, but the music just shines wheather is Gabriel Y's or Alison Krauss singing.
This was a big film and Disney. seemingly, did above their average for it. They wouldn't wanna be accused of pulling a Patton or another Gang We-lated wong... ;)

Well if that's the case it seems they started from scatch on the encode for Cold Mountain. The Blu-ray looks great and I would say very "film like". I don't notice any DNR or EE on it. 46" 1080p screen @ 6 feet.

Wrong.
Darcy Hunter 02-11-09, 06:51 PM I saw the BD of Boondock Saints - Dir. Cut at Future Shop yesterday. They had about 6 copies of it in stock. Pretty cheap too.

I am not in Canada and probably will not own COld Mountain, but I became curious about it on BD when I saw how good it looked on Uni HD. It had really good PQ there, so I was assuming it might have amazing BD PQ. When it comes out for rental in the states, I have a feeling it might be demo/reference PQ.

someone else 02-13-09, 06:34 AM Seems to look better then the usual canadian release. No rampant artefacts, detail is good. Something seems off about the colors to me though. Very pink.

It's a mistake on the package. It is 1080p.
Patsfan123 02-13-09, 03:32 PM It will be interesting to see how this compares to the US release. The US will probably come on a BD50 but there's a chance that DNR is baked into the master.
oilblue 02-13-09, 04:28 PM It's a mistake on the package. It is 1080p.
Thanks for confirming that RDarrylR. Makes it that much easier to select this version of GWH in advance of the US BD release later this year. It's nice to have a choice between
- "main feature only" at a lower price like this
and
- extras at regular BD price levels (coming later this year in the US release)
Only thing that still bothers me is the absence of subtitles. Can't really fathom how those are deemed to be extras... Here's hoping that's not a trend.
Thanks again.
k1davis 02-13-09, 04:46 PM I'm very pleased with the look of 21 Grams. The film was shot with a lot grain by design and that seemed to overwhelm the DVD, but in HD it looks much more like I remember it in the theater.
Plus it's an engrossing movie.
BlueMan1 02-13-09, 08:45 PM I am probably going to get 21 Grams for sure and most likely Good WIll Hunting. I might also pick up Freddy vs. Jason and Nightmare on Elm Street if feedback is good on those titles as well. And here's hoping that Traffic gets a good transfer.
Ripper64 02-14-09, 01:47 PM DOA looks and sounds excellent. If you think you would like that type of flick. Surrounds rock on this title and some pummeling low LFE that will knock off any loose boards around your house..lol

What kind of audio track ? Is it lossless?:)

It has less lost.... ;) It looks great and the musical parts are silky smooth.

I can now retire the old non anamorpic dvd. :)

RDarrylR 02-21-09, 03:37 PM Thanks.:)

Not sure on that one. I only bought Cold Mountain. I have not seen a single Canada only Alliance release though that was not lossless.
According to the scan of the back cover here I'd say it's DTS HD MA
http://www.axelmusic.com/resources/covers/back/065935824145.jpg
They have had some labelling issues but usually it is them labelling with lower specs than what it really is on the disc. i.e. some packages have said 1080i but really it is 1080p and some packages have said just DTS audio but it really is DTS HD MA.
Has anyone seen The Constant Gardener?
I'm interested in hearing some thoughts on PQ.
Geoff D 02-23-09, 03:53 PM My copy of Se7en has been posted, and I'm genuinely intrigued as to how it'll turn out. The remastered DVD was terrific overall, but the strong edge halos spoiled the party. Will this BD use that older colour-corrected transfer or something more recent? I can't wait to find out.

MSmith83 02-25-09, 02:41 PM Se7en's back cover (http://www.axelmusic.com/productDetails/065935823933) lists 1080i video along with an incorrect aspect ratio. Meanwhile, Traffic's back cover (http://www.axelmusic.com/productDetails/065935825470) also lists 1080i video.
Can anyone verify if the back covers are correct?
Geoff D 02-25-09, 02:53 PM Whiggles: Mine's coming from Axel.
ryoohki 02-25-09, 07:46 PM The should fired the people that does their Back Specifications. Most of the last batch had error on it (listing 1080i, while it was 1080p) wrong ratio, listing DTS only but it was HD MA etc..

It is odd how such obvious mistakes are so often made with Alliance's BDs. I understand that these are practically budget releases, but it would be nice to know what basic specs we're actually getting without having to wait for other people's impressions.
But, hey, at least they get the correct movies on the discs. :D
RDarrylR 02-25-09, 09:20 PM Well at least they are consistent with their packaging in that all their releases are for region 1.
Patsfan123 02-26-09, 06:51 PM Anyone get Se7en yet? Axelmusic has a very attractive price for it now..
Canary_Jules 02-27-09, 05:48 AM I have it but haven't had a chance to watch it yet. Will post my thoughts soon.
Early reports say it is indeed cropped to 1.78:1 - bummer :(
MSmith83 02-27-09, 10:46 AM Early reports say it is indeed cropped to 1.78:1 - bummer :(
Yup, someone confirmed that Se7en is indeed presented in an incorrect 1.78 aspect ratio. It's a shame, and somewhat comical, that a movie like this gets a "fool screen" treatment while Alliance gave DOA its proper 2.35 ratio.
MSmith83 02-27-09, 11:13 AM Any comments about Traffic would be great. I'm especially interested in knowing if it's from a different master than the one used for Universal's HD DVD release, in that it's not up-converted from SD resolution.

I just bought it.
What other import BDs do they have? Do they have Pulp Fiction???

Thanks for the warning. I've cancelled my order - now, ironically, I'm glad it hadn't shipped yet.
eric.exe 02-27-09, 01:19 PM Early reports say it is indeed cropped to 1.78:1 - bummer :( Most people assume 1.78:1 for a 2.35:1 movie means its cropped, when most of the time it's open matte. Still not the correct way to watch the movie...
Dex Robinson 02-27-09, 01:38 PM Most people assume 1.78:1 for a 2.35:1 movie means its cropped, when most of the time it's open matte. Still not the correct way to watch the movie...
Agreed.
Sources seem to indicate this was shot in Super35. Assuming that to be correct, this should have been transferred to 1.78 by opening up the frame and not cropping.
I would also say that it's likley not the way to watch the movie...with one possible caveat. I've heard more and more directors and DPs point to the flexibility of Super35 as a way to adjust aspect ratios for certain presentations. I would not begin to second guess whether or not Seven was filmed with that in mind. When in doubt though, I'll assume this was intended to be 2.35 unless informed otherwise.
Geoff D 02-27-09, 03:27 PM For once the back cover is correct: Se7en is indeed in 1.78 and it's definitely 1080i too. Looks open matte to me and (from memory) doesn't share the colour correction of the remastered R1 DVD. Pity.
It wouldn't surprise me if Alliance used some sort of HDTV master, given the lack of progressive and the 16:9-friendly ratio. This feeling of laziness extends to the Blu-ray itself, as the disc doesn't even have a chapter select menu. All you can do is change audio, and that's it. (The chapter stops themselves are in the same places as New Line's DVD).
RDarrylR 02-27-09, 04:16 PM It's really 1080i? Someone else said it was actually 1080p on another thread I read.

The back cover was improperly labelled.
Geoff D 02-27-09, 04:39 PM I'm not going from the back cover. I don't have the means to analyse the disc using a computer or whatever, but my PS3 is outputting it at 1080i60. I've got it set to 1080p24, so if something's 24p then my PS3 presents it as such. Either the disc is incorrectly flagged, or it's really 1080i. The copyright warning before the film is in 1080p though. :D
Canary_Jules 02-28-09, 01:10 AM I can confirm. It is 1080p/24 - at least that's my projector says. Also the sound is DTS HD MA 5.1. I watched a couple of minutes of the beginning of the film and it looks perfectly fine. I haven't seen the film before so don't know how it should look, but the colours look muted. There is a layer of grain visible (which is always good IMO), and there is plenty of detail. There are absolutely no menus on my disc apart from a pop-up button to select audio, but that's it! This is bare bones indeed my friends!
Geoff D 02-28-09, 05:51 AM Odd that my PS3 (US version) doesn't like it. I put in Akira straight after and it's output as 1080p24, just like all my 24p discs are.
GizmoDVD 02-28-09, 12:33 PM No on else can confirm the Aspect Ratio?
RDarrylR 02-28-09, 01:07 PM It's 1.78:1.

Any other comments on the Seven transfer? Should I pick this up, or is there an american release or another coming soon?
I am fine with open matte, if given the option i perfer it to fill up my screen, as long as i dont see parts of the set. Cropped however is entirely different.
fiddlesticks 03-01-09, 03:18 AM Glad I found out about the AR here, definitely not buying this now.
stevenjw 03-02-09, 11:51 AM Any info on PQ of Traffic yet? Has the PQ improved over the terrible HD-DVD?
Geoff D 03-02-09, 07:21 PM The Beaver has a review of Traffic (http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDReviews20/traffic_dvd_review.htm) up (it's not good news), and they've altered their review of Se7en (http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDReviews44/se7en_blu-ray.htm) to confirm that it is 1080i. See? Wasn't lying, was I?
(You might wanna edit that first post, DF. :D)

Did they just assume that it's 1080i due to the Seven being 1080i?
joemama127 03-03-09, 12:29 AM also beware of bilingual covers. there's a stupid law here that says discs with a french track has to have french packaging when sold in one of our provinces (states). some companies make separate packaging for that area, others just make the covers half english and half french for the entire country. If that happens here with Spanish I'm moving. Haven't decided which country yet though..:(
edit- also, what up with all of the releases that don't have special features? Didn't the Blu-ray forum tout the extra space of the format for such things..

I'm confused by all this 1080i talk as well, depending on how the stream was flagged, we should be able to inverse-telecine the 24p back from 1080i, or am I missing something? Is that not happening in the players?
I have an HTPC for playback, and no 60i content to test. I've taken broadcast Mpeg2-1080i/29.9XX and run it through dscaler to inverse-telecine it back to 24p, and it looked great.
BerserkerTails 03-03-09, 07:00 PM I'll be all over the Trailer Park Boys when it comes out; I love that show! Nice to see it has some followers in the States too. They're working on another movie at the moment called "Trailer Park Boys: Countdown to Liquor Day". Should be awesome.
Copper Blue 03-06-09, 08:58 AM Hey has anyone definitively determined if Traffic is 1080i or 1080p? I know DVDbeaver says 1080i, but I think he just looks at the back of the box and he has been wrong before (like with Good Will Hunting).

Right, but are you just going by the box, or does it display on your system as 1080i? Alliance boxes are known to be suspect.
RDarrylR 03-06-09, 01:17 PM My display of course. I know the packaging isn't correct 1/2 the time with them.
My 1080p TV shows a 1080i signal on this one when watching the movie. This is the same as it shows for the few other Blu-rays that are only 1080i and many special features which are only 1080i. I'm playing the disc from my PS3. The majority of all Blu-ray movies of course shows 1080p on my TV.
mumbles3k 03-06-09, 02:55 PM There's also visual evidence on DVD Beaver that it's 1080i.
DigitalfreakNYC 03-06-09, 06:54 PM What was 15 Minutes? 1080i or 1080p?
I just discovered a quick-fix for the Se7en disc... if you have a video processor like the DVDO iScan VP50 you can just set the Active Aspect Ratio to 2.35:1 and it will mask the image to display it in the correct format.

Except they didn't just crop the same amount from the top and bottom for the whole movie. There's a whole featurette on the Platinum Edition DVD about how they manually moved the cropping up and down throughout the whole movie to get the best framing.

DigitalfreakNYC 03-12-09, 07:28 AM Is the transfer of the Canadian release of Brokeback Mountain the same as the US release?
I'm going to say probably not. It'll probably be 1080i. I'm done with Alliance releases from here on out.
Patsfan123 03-12-09, 07:47 AM I'm sure that its the same as the Uni release. All of their Universal releases have been ports of the US disc. It is usually safe to assume that if an Alliance release comes out at the same time or after the US release it is a direct port.

RDarrylR 03-12-09, 11:00 AM They include all extras as well? The exact same version?
Yes for all the ones I have seen. It is only the ones that come out only in Canada that lack extras (as long as the US one has one too).
Ripper64 03-12-09, 04:39 PM I picked up The Worlds Fastest Indian yesterday. Just watching it now. I didn't see it in the list. Is this another Canadian release ?.

Just got the Canadian version of Brokeback and it's the same as the US version. 1080p, same extras, etc.
Copper Blue 03-14-09, 09:10 AM If Alliance sticks us with a 1080i Trainspotting in 3 weeks, I think I may cry...
Smoke_019 03-19-09, 05:13 PM did anyone pick up the canadian version of rounders? i just saw it at this used dvd shop near where i work (the blu-rays were new/sealed)...apparently the US version was delayed...
the US version supposedly has a 10th annivesary cover and includes an alternate ending, whereas when i looked over the case of the canadian version, there is no mention of it being the movie's 10th anniversary or of any special features (like the alternate ending)...that's why i didn't end up buying it...
Has anyone seen The Constant Gardener?
I'm interested in hearing some thoughts on PQ.
The PQ looks fine to me, on a 92 inch screen with a Sanyo 2000, but as has been mentioned before, despite what it says on the cover, there are no extras. (Should Alliance be sued for misleading advertising?)
JaylisJayP 04-02-09, 06:42 PM Does anyone know where I can find the Audio specs for these upcoming titles? I found Trainspotting over at DVDBeaver, but interesting in Knockaround Guys, Boiler Room and A Man Apart.
Thank you very much in advance!
Roger Mathus 04-02-09, 07:43 PM Rounders is 1080p and in my opinion one of the better looking of the Alliance releases being discussed along with Good Will Hunting. Requiem For A Dream looks terrible but this may be the source material. It is very soft and grainy. I have not compared yet to the regular DVD. I did not think so highly as comments here regarding Constant Gardner and Cold Mountain. I thought both were often soft and I thought that the color might be off in Cold Mountain. I agree with comments on 21 Grams. I view on 8 ft Stewart FireHawk using Marantz 15 projector and new OPPO 83 Blu-Ray player.
UPDATE: I re-visited Cold Mountain and find the color fine but I do see a veil of grain (more than most BDs) that can be seen from viewing distance. It is not just dark scenes but through out.

Isn't that a good omen? ....that it didn't get DNR'ed into pulp. I liked the way it looked.
Brajesh 04-07-09, 11:24 AM Any impressions on 'Chasing Amy' and 'Trainspotting'?
mumbles3k 04-07-09, 01:57 PM My CHASING AMY disc is in the mail, so I'll post my impessions when I get it.
But for those willing to wait, Kevin Smith has revealed that an extensive special edition of CHASING AMY will be released in America on BD in July with a new DP approved transfer. CLERKS is coming out too.
Brajesh 04-07-09, 03:17 PM Well, I ordered both as well, along w/'Good Will Hunting'. Will post impressions after they arrive.
paulstachniak 04-07-09, 04:50 PM i picked up trainspotting an hour ago. will post impressions soon.
edit: my impressions...
Firstly, the bad news. Appears to be the cut US version. I'm assuming the audio isn't the original Scottish soundtrack either.
As for the Blu Ray, like DVDBeaver said for this price point is quite nice. It's progressive, great color. The print used has dirt here and there, nothing terribly distracting. No DNR or EE that i can notice. Some shots exhibit depth, however, there is macro-blocking in dark areas - probably due to the fact this film isn't on a BD-50. All in all a very nice looking Blu Ray. I do, however, look forward to a proper US release which restores the features of the UK definitive edition - if only to replace of the french all over the packaging.

Roger Mathus 04-08-09, 01:39 PM With the new 2-disc collectors edition of NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN I have encountered an unexpected reaction when playing the supplements. For example, The Making of....,
is 4X3 aspect but the OPPO is slow to reveal the picture with the sound starting prior to HDMI lock for the picture. The picture comes on with horizontal stretch. It I hit the setup button the correct 4X3 aspect ratio engages and stays after hitting setup again to return to the picture. The setting on the OPPO is 16X9 AUTO which normally gives the proper 4X3 picture with black bars on the side. I tried the disc in my Marantz BD8002 and it renders this supplement in 4X3 as intended. It appears that there may be an HDMI issue with this disc and the OPPO. Can anyone else confirm with this disc?
The second supplement opens properly on the OPPO at 4X3 but the third supplement acts like the "Making Of...".
When checking out this disc I encountered another interesting item. I played the trailer for DOUBT on both the OPPO and Marantz players. Both are set to output 1080p/24 and this is confirmed with the projector INFO. This is a particularly detailed image in the DOUBT trailer. It projects a sharper and more detailed image with the OPPO. Both players are at default sharpness picture settings.

mumbles3k 04-10-09, 04:56 PM Is REINDEER GAMES the director's cut?
Neo_Reloaded 04-10-09, 04:59 PM Amazon.ca has a listing for a June 2nd Alliance release of Fanboys on Blu-ray. Amazon isn't always reliable in these regards (they had a BD release of Blindness up that failed to materialize), but I'm wondering if anyone has heard anything else about this one. With The Weinstein Company apparently shafting the US on a BD release of Fanboys, it would be very nice to be able to get one from Canada.
Copper Blue 04-10-09, 06:04 PM Looks like Running Scared has 1080i printed on the back cover. Can anyone confirm if this is a misprint or if this one is indeed 1080i?
Exist2Inspire 04-10-09, 09:18 PM I think I read over at bluray.com that it was 1080i. I'll see if I can find the like.
Also, the picture is quite bad from what i've read. I didn't even bother renting it, and just ordered the German Version.
clear31 04-11-09, 01:46 PM A Man Apart, Knockaround Guys and Boiler Room arrived to me.
A Man Apart looks really good and pops. I think maybe only a few scenes in the beginning were kind of spotty, but overall it is a very nice disc. I wouldn't expect any of these three titles to be on the radar for US release soon, so I picked them up.
mumbles3k 04-11-09, 02:00 PM I just watched CHASING AMY. I think they used the same transfer as the DVD. All things considered, it's not too bad. I think it's a decent improvement over the DVD. The film was shot in Super 16 and is really grainy. The grain is intact. I didn't notice any DNR. But there is some edge enhancement. There's also a little bit of jittering going on. The only other complaint I have is that the print they used was quite dirty for such a recent movie. There are even some occasional light scratches.
Personally, I'm glad I picked this up, because it is an improvement over the DVD, and CHASING AMY is one of my favorite films of all time, so I don't really have a problem double dipping. But like I said before, the American version is coming out in three months with a new transfer and tons of new special features. So if you're on the fence, I'd recommend waiting for that one.
Roger Mathus 04-11-09, 05:32 PM Just received the following:
CHASING AMY 1080p DTS HD Master Aspect : 1.78 PQ Excellent, moderate grain but does not distract. Comic book lettering not sharp in opening credits but other lettering and picture very sharp with brilliant colors and black level. Shadow detail quite excellent and revealing in dark bar scenes.
REINDEER GAMES 1080p DTS HD Master Aspect 1.78 PQ Very Good, somewhat variable but likely represents the shooting conditions.
TRAINSPOTTING 1080p DTS HD Master Aspect 1.78 PQ Much improved from DVD and gritty look as appropriate for the film. Don't watch the toilet scene right after lunch! Some edge effects in more distant scenes but seldom distracting.
All are bare bones with zero extras and menu is only audio choices. Please note that the default audio is DD 5.1....Must select from menu to get DTS HD.....Menu did not seem to come up in Chapter 1 but audio button worked.
I am pleased with all three......especially CHASING AMY.
Have not verified but think that original aspect ratio is 1.85 for all three. Purists may object to 1.78. I can accept for 1.85 films but NOT for 2.35.
Viewed with Marantz VP 15 projector on 8 ft Firehawk screen using new OPPO 83 Blue-Ray player.
mumbles3k 04-11-09, 06:34 PM The OAR for REINDEER GAMES is 2.39:1. Guess I won't be buying that one.
Roger Mathus 04-11-09, 08:24 PM Was concerned about that one, looks like I am stuck with it. On my chapter check, framing did not look bad. Guess I will try to find my DVD of this to compare. I doubt that this was shot open matt. I recall a couple of tight shots that would be badly cut off if framed at 2.39.

It's Super 35, you are probably getting the entire frame in 1.78 that was used for shooting and then either matted for theaters or opened up for TV.
I have less a problem with that than I do with the version of the movie that they utilized...definitely going to pass on the theatrical version.

Unfortunately, you are quite right. I bought The Butterfly Effect the other day, without knowing it was a "canada-exclusivity"...:o:mad::rolleyes: Debatable PQ (though 1080p, but still nothing to celebrate), no extra whatsoever, only a rather fine DTS-HDMA track... Yesterday I bought Let The Right One In and The Last Metro, noticing the presence of The Illusionist on the shelves, until I saw it was an Alliance release (don't know about 1080i/p), once again with nothing but the movie, not even a trailer... I really wonder why Alliance even bother with these absolutely UNACCEPTABLE releases...
[edit]so from now on, I won't buy any exclusive from Canada, ever. Bilingual packaging is more than enough (custom covers and scans, thank you!...)

I'll buy a copy if it gets good reviews. I wouldn't believe any spec's on these Alliance titles till it's in stone. Cold Mountain was a real winner for me. It's my only Alliance title so far.
Neo_Reloaded 05-14-09, 07:34 PM I'm really hoping the Alliance release of Fanboys actually comes out on 6/2. All it needs to have is the correct aspect ratio and a real 1080/24p encode and I'll be happy (thankfully lossless audio is at least a given with all Alliance releases).

Yeah and to level things out, check out Seven, The English Patient, The Butterfly Effect, Reinder Games, The Illusionist, Sin City, Silent Hill, etc + every other release that lacks some extras (when they even have some) over the US release, + no digital copy while the US version has it (Traitor, The Wrestler, etc). I mean of course it's better than nothing but I won't waste my money on Blu-rays just to end up with a lossless mix... I don't want questionable PQ, and I want some good extras as well: so I just wait for the US release.

I mean of course it's better than nothing but I won't waste my money on Blu-rays just to end up with a lossless mix... I don't want questionable PQ, and I want some good extras as well: so I just wait for the US release.
Isn't it a good thing then that Alliance has releases without extras? Those that want and appreciate extras have the US release (granted, you have to wait, and pay more). Those that prefer a lower price point vs. extras can go with the Alliance release.
Point is, there's some choice. We don't have to agree on whether extras are worth the higher price. We each have an option that suits our preferences. Sounds good to me.
That said, Alliance is definitely not above criticism. Chief problem is that specifications are seldom accurate on Alliance BD packaging. I probably shouldn't expect them to get their act in gear, but accurate packaging should be dead simple. Wake up Alliance.

Some don't care about Special Features nor a useless Digital Copy. A lower price, and actually getting the title vs. waiting years is another plus.

But I care about 1080p, I care about a simple mention on the box when it's a director's cut (see The Butterfly Effect), I care about the transfer (and decent quality isn't good enough), hence I care about a properly released title. Which is not often the case with Alliance.
Digital Copy is useless to some, and useful to others... I'm travelling a few times a year, and to me they're certainly not useless... Anyway...
oilblue: I agree, it's nice to have a choice. But I'd prefer choosing between two good releases, not between a superior one and an inferior one. I can live without special features that's for sure, if only the rest can be up to par.

Yeah, that is a pain in the ass (1080i/p) but that's why I made a list of all the movies available and coming soon and mention the i/p, AR, Special Features etc. For me, I'm not a special features person. I typically only watch them because I have to (review copies) and for the most part could careless about the majority of them. Digital Copies to me (and 80% of people who get them according to the latest study on 1 title by Sony) show its worthless.
GizmoDVD 05-15-09, 03:57 PM Because its tough to update this thread (since I am not the OP) I started a new thread detailing all the Canadian releases and issues regarding them.

Feel free to either use that thread to continue discussions or whatever.
