From the picture it just looks like you thin down the mud, roll it on, then use a drywall knife, then start marking it from the top down.

+1 for what Staffy said. Buy the info if you are planning on DIY. HD actually had a paint that would give you the same result. My wife and I used it for the spare bathroom and ended up not liking the result. The end result was not pretty (I admit to user error) and we decided to just rip out the drywall and start fresh. Wasn't pretty, pay the 10 bucks learn to do it correctly and practice your technique before you do the deed for real.
