View Full Version : Leave it to my xbox to get me to use my ps3 more:)
I bought my ps3 for blueray but have decided to not buy movies like i was doing when dvd came out 10 years ago. I also hate paying the high price for renting them at Blockbuster. So my ps3 got used maybe once a month if that. Now that Netflix is on I subscribed with the minimum to be able to stream to my xbox. So now I am using my ps3 at least once a week by watching blueray movies on it.
Almost feel like Sony should send flowers and candy to Netflix and Microsoft:D
Degenerazn 01-04-09, 04:19 AM Same here! I got the trial for netflix and got addicted to The Office. I'm all caught up but decided to keep my subscription for occasional streaming and Blu Ray rentals. Its almost the only use my PS3 ever gets.
Same here guys! Netflix really rocks. I get my Blu-Rays two days after they are shipped. I am on the two Blu-Ray deal and I stream almost constantly via my Xbox 360.
Netflix was a massive value-add to both my consoles for sure. Blu is still too expensive for me to buy in bulk but I pretty much always have a new movie to watch now.

Is the streaming really of good enough quality to be viewed on a 40-inch or bigger TV without noticeable blockiness? If yes, what is your connection speed?

In case you didn't notice, Sony banned Netflix from streaming Sony-owned movies to the Xbox 360.
mproper 01-04-09, 12:38 PM Congratulations everyone on joining NF and leaping head-first into the late 1990's :)

Depends on the title. I've watched several HD titles and they look fine (below BD of course, but about broadcast quality)
SD titles vary wildly from one title to the next.

I view the streaming on a 100 inch projection setup. I have only a slow 3Mbs DSL line for internet, so this means no HD for me via the streaming, although I usually get the best SD available. The quality really varies from movie to movie - some I have watched that have been nearly indistinguishable from their DVD counterparts. Some have been pretty bad - although not unwatchable.
The poor quality ones have not been poor due to "blockiness", but rather a generally very soft picture. Looks slightly out of focus.

Not true.
hdmi4ever 01-04-09, 01:26 PM Not true.
They lifted the ban? It was all over the web.

It was never a ban in the first place. In less than a few days the movies were back up and running.
So the OP did not have the $9/month Netflix, but the crappy streaming feature pushed him over the edge, not BD? People are strange...

PS3 fanboys? ABSOLUTELY !

Your missing the point.
Which is: Because he had to subscribe to the a minimum netflix plan (paying the $9 a month) simply to stream netflix titles to xbox. He is now allowed to rent unlimited BR movies.. and he currently watches a BR movie once a week. Sure he could have rented BR movies before, but he already said that 'Renting the movies 1 by 1 from Blockbuster, or buying BR movies' was something he deemed too expensive.
And the Netflix quality is far from "crappy" if you have a decent internet connection. I pay $44.99 a month for my internet service through my cable provider and I recieve speeds of 12megs down/2 megs up with a 12ms ping time. Netflix looks VERY dvd like on my 360.
KLUNKDM 01-04-09, 11:09 PM The streaming from Netflix to the 360 got me signed up and enjoying Netflix. I like using the steaming for old TV shows and stuff like that.....But since they have Blu-Ray, I finally decided to pull the trigger and buy a PS3. I have missed HD movies since I was a HD-DVD supporter, but I think its about time to move on over and I can play the exclusives Sony gets........So I can say XBOX kinda, in a long about way, got me to buy a PS3 :)

DAMN that's a great price.... what ISP do you use? I pay 34 a month for 1.5 down and the streaming netflix looks like garbage.
Daekwan 01-04-09, 11:50 PM Optimum Online through Cablevision in the NYC area.. for an extra $10 bux a month.. I can get the speedboost.. which pumps service up to 30megs down.. and 5megs down.. so that would be $54.99 a month.
www.optimumonline.com for anybody thats interested...
I can imagine with 1/10th of my bandwidth Netflix wouldnt look as great your setup as it does with mine..
Guinn3sS 01-05-09, 12:07 AM Damn.. I get the 1.5 from crappy AT&T DSL. Comcast is the only cable provider in my area and it's $60 for 6megs down. RIP OFF!

Where do you live? I get Comcast Cable TV and Internet for $66 a month. Call them up and ask for a promotional deal, they usually have something for people wanting to switch over.
FIVE ONE SIX 01-05-09, 12:33 AM I receive speeds of 12megs down/2 megs up
i remember back in the day when XBL was released for the original xbox, and OOL was only maxing out at 1meg upload, and you were only getting that if everyone else in the neighborhood was asleep. it was tough hosting some games like GR and GRIT, and being able to host a full room of 12 with full booms was almost unheard of, unless you were on an expensive T? connection. good thing providers increased their speeds. i've always thought about getting a FiOS internet connection, but i hear their installs are a nightmare...
Guinn3sS 01-05-09, 12:33 AM Northern California... I don't want the comcast TV subscription and I hate it that you have to buy a deal to make it worth while. I need the directv for my sports subscriptions :)
We need more choices!
HorrorScope 01-05-09, 02:53 AM Is there any service online where I can download a movie to my pc, then I can stream it from there via media center? Something that is like $1 a movie or $20 a month unlimited? With all the new movies. I just as well do that now.

Why not just rent movies from Xbox Live or Playstation Network?

I can relate to this story, having started with HD-DVD via Xbox 360, and being a Netflix subscriber. The death of HD-DVD, coupled with Sony's recent "$150 off deal" triggered the buying of a PS3.
My only slight regret was discovering that the PS3 doesn't have an infra-red capability so I can't use my Sony HDTV remote to drive it, no matter how hard I pressed the buttons. So it's a challenge integrating the PS3 into a home theater setup. There are clunky workarounds, but that's another story.
Daekwan 01-05-09, 11:18 AM Using the PS3 controller to navigate BR movies isnt too bad. Thats what I've always used, oddly enough I do the same on my 360.. I use the controller. And I have 3 different 360 media remotes (The big one, the little one, and the Harmony 360 remote).. still love the controller :0)
have you guys heard of people ditchin their tv services (i.e.: directv, cable) and getting just netflix plus buying movies here and there. and also having a pc with a hd tv tuner?
im seriously considering it. i spent 2 weeks on vacation and there was NOTHING i wanted to watch on tv. i think its all the ads nowadays. all programs i do watch follow the same script it seems. they tease you with something then go to commercials. then come back and spend 5 minutes explaining the tease, then show 1-2 minutes of whatever they were teasing, then commercials. then come back talk about something not related, then end of show. if i drop directv i would be saving some $80 a month. in these times that is starting to look very attractive.

i can use both ps3 controller or the ps3 remote easily. however the wife only seems to understand the remote and at that she gets ticked because she has to use 2 remotes (one for the tv and the other for the ps3).:p
HorrorScope 01-05-09, 12:27 PM Why not just rent movies from Xbox Live or Playstation Network?
The 360 I have come to the conclusion cost 2 times more then it should for all video media they offer. It's not competitvely priced.

Heard of it.. hell I did it last week. I cut off my cable tv service completely. I now only have Cable internet which costs $44.99 a month. What they dont tell you is that basic cable is included with that AND you can still recieve all the OTA HD channels through your cable providers cable signal. (Sounds confusing, but yes the OTA antenna channels show up on the basic cable signal).
So that means in pure HD glory.. I get ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX and few other channels here and there. I also get ridiculously fast internet.. all for about $62 bucks a month.
Movie viewing? There isnt a movie I can think of that I cant either: Stream, Divx download, rent from XBLive Marketplace or have the DVD mailed to me in 1-2 business days by Netflix.
The only difference is now I must plan my movie watching, but considering the $100 saved a month I can get over that. I must admit I do miss ESPN, History, Discovery, Military, Travel Channels.. and G4TV.. but considering all the programming I still have access too.. I dont miss it THAT much.. to return to payin $100 a month for it.

Have you looked at some streaming sites to possible pick up those missing stations? Hulu or Play On? Others? I've been thinking down the same lines you are.
i've looked into hulu and they seem a good source for some extra programming. daekwan should check it.
I grew up with only ota and 4 or 5 channels. So I am used to not having cable or satellite but I have a friend staying with me who couldn't do with out it. I have enough computers to record every thing I watch locally in HD and watch on media center. Considering how easy it is to find a show online makes it very tempting.
So far I only seem to have issues with Netflix during peak times. Not everyday, just sometimes.

I would agree.. an SD movie should be 2 to 3 bucks for a 24 hour rental.. an HD movie about $1 more.
What made Itunes so popular is not just the convenience, but the pricing. You can buy any single for 99cents or any album for $9.99. When things are priced that reasonably, you tend to put alot less time into deciding if you want it or not.
Right now $4 bucks for SD or $6 for HD.. makes me stick with renting my movies through Netflix or BB.
Daekwan 01-05-09, 01:31 PM g4tv? SRSRLY?
I love Attack of the Show. I could watch it everyday (and did with the help of DVR). They simply run down a list of all the things I'm interested in, in a 1 hour show. From the newest games and electronics.. to movie reviews and hilarious sex advice. Kevin and Olivia are very entertaining also.
Everyonce in a while they come in useful with other shows. Maybe Xplays review on a game I want, or something silly like Ninja Warrior.
mproper 01-05-09, 01:33 PM On a side note, my DirecTV went out about a week ago (bad wind storm knocked my dish out of alignment). They couldn't come out until yesterday to fix it.
I did not miss it at all. Granted, most shows are on holiday break, but between games, Netflix, Netflix streaming, and Hulu and CBS (with PlayOn) I had plenty of content to keep me busy. In fact it felt good to knock quite a few movies out of my instant queue (I'm now under 100 finally).
After that little involuntary experiment, I'd probably drop DirecTV if I wasn't under contract, and do what Daekwan did (just get basic cable/internet for $60/month)
Mw182006 01-05-09, 02:12 PM I've been thinking about ditching the cable too. I pay ~$90 a month for tv and the premium internet, and more than half goes towards tv. I literally only watch HD programming, save the occasional Spurs game that's not in HD, and haven't looked back since I bought my HDTV. What's bothered me is the fact that TW only charges me an extra $5 a month for the HD channels, and of course there's no HD-only package available.
I need to dig in to hulu and playon, do they offer anything from Food Network, Nat Geo, Discovery, AE, History channel, etc?
jcbaggins 01-05-09, 03:12 PM I will also be using my PS3 more thanks to this thread. I just got netflix for christmas and had no idea they had blue ray..i just added for the extra $1/month. Thanks guys!
I was starting to feel bad for buying the 80g PS3 when it came out and then hardly ever using it.

I actually bought a big indoor antenna with that in mind ... pick up the major networks with the antenna and then buy & rent DVDs for movies. But then the past week of football and basketball in HD (some of which were only on cable channels) and a couple of spectacular shows on Discovery HD convinced me to keep cable, at least for another month or two.
sports is the only thing that stops me from doing this.
Yeah same here but I am getting more and more tempted with cable prices sky rocketing. I am seriously considering just getting a HD over the air antenna for my locals. Though I will miss the ESPN games I just can't justify spending that kind of money for it.
