Did anyone catch the HD premier this morning? How did it look? For some reason my local only showed in SD.

I was about to say my local station also had it only in SD, but then I realized it's the same station as yours! (WYFF-4 in Greenville SC).

I set it on the DVR because they happened to mention it would be HD on the 11pm news last night. It looked pretty good. They had a couple of graphics glitches but it looked good. They had the main camera off center though which was driving me nuts.

If you only saw it in SD, your local station either

a) aired it on delay and didn't have HD recording capability,
b) they didn't know or
c) they didn't buy the HD version.

Was the spaghetti cat in HD? :D

What time is broadcast nationally? My local ABC airs it at 9 am central.

I sent an e-mail to the station engineer and I haven't heard back yet. They broadcast the show live at 9:00am eastern. They show Ellen and Oprah in HD so I would assume they would arrange a similar deal for Regis. Maybe they just didn't know. I have no idea if these shows give everyone the time they need to make sure they are ready to go on day one.

SD on WBAL. They show it at 10. It actually looked worse today.

HD, at 9AM ET on WEWS ABC 5 in Cleveland. The first few seconds were SD, but it quickly changed to HD.

the camera that is "locked in place" showing both Regis and Kelley during Host Chat seemed to have some sort of soft filter on it. When the audience was shown, they looked far sharper than Regis or Kelley.

Maybe it's the same filter they use for close-ups of Barbara Walters on the View?

I also noticed that the sound is far crisper than the old SD-days of this show.

Regis & Kelly is in HD on WJLA-DT ABC 7 in DC. Looked at several minutes of it. That is one serious soft filter setting they have on the camera showing both Regis and Kelly at the desk. Probably running processing software to remove any detail and blemishes for skin tones.

in HD on KGO (ABC O&O) in SFBA. Not surprising since Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune are in HD.

Agree that the PQ on this show is soft. In comparison The View is much sharper.

Its sharp enough to see Regis has a REALLY BAD DYE JOB. Thats never been as visible on Letterman as it was this morning on Live.

Regis & Kelly was in SD here in Des Moines on KCCI. They air it delayed at 9 CT, which could explain it. I could definitely see an improvement in the PQ, even in SD.

I agree, a VERY soft filter or what ever they use. I thought I was going blind when I fist saw it. They might has well left the show in SD.

Still no HD on WJRT in Flint, Michigan. It is an ABC O&O station and they air it at 9AM ET. Good Morning America before it and The View an hour after it are HD.

I have HD locals and they are still showing Regis is SD. Emails to the station have never been responded to. Tired of waiting on hold. I think they are overwhelmed on the customer service side since Dish dropped the local ABC affiliate.

GMA and The View are HD because they are ABC network programs, which ABC sends to the affiliate on their network HD feed. Network programs are sent to the station and shown at the same time. Regis is a syndicated show, which means it is sent to the station at a different time and they have to record it and play it back whenever it is on their schedule. The problem probably is your station does not have HDTV recording capability.

I caught tue's show. I think they changed the filter. It's a lot better now. Still not like the morning news shows or Leno & Letterman but watchable now. I don't feel the need to reach for a pair off glasses.:)

It isn't aired in hidef in Memphis on WPTY 24-ABC.
They were told it was coming in hidef.
They bought equipment to run it and they marketed it as hidef.
But it isn't sent in hidef.

They are told it is a cost issue for transmission.
The east coast gets hidef, but not west of that.
I don't know about the west coast.

The matter came up when I noticed I couldn't get 16:9 on that show.
I'm told they can't access 16:9 except off the hidef signal.

It is in HD on my local ABC station - WISN in Milwaukee. I'm told that the HD feed comes down at 9am Eastern, 8am Central. My local station records it and plays it back at 9am Central.

They said it has something to do with the timing.
They are using a feed at 9 am and that is the issue.
I can try to get more clarification.

Yeah, the HD feed is only fed once at 8am Central time (along with a SD feed) which is when the show is filmed live. At 9am central time only the SD feed is refed.

That is my understanding.

If you notice the for some segments is very soft it's because WABC does not record the taped interviews in HD. It's soft 16:9 SD.
Some of the Friday shows are taped.

I will testify that he R&K HD broadcast in South Bend, IN is one of the worst I've ever seen for an HD talk show. I think its shot in 720P and not 1080i due to the serious need for overscan to avoid nearly a 2 inch black bar on the top of the screen. I think the 720 is then up-converted to 1080i which downgrades the quality. I often complain about this during the summer when I watch it with my wife.

Now that this show has been in HD for some time, one would assume any issues would have had enough time to be dealt with. The studio cameras look softer than widescreen SD, but other inserted material, such as field packages, look good so transmission doesn't appear to be the problem. I suspect they want to avoid making Regis and perhaps his cohost from looking older, but this is just plain bad HD. The contrast looks odd too, like there is too much gamma correction. I think they may be using Ikegami native 720p studio cameras.

The show is still successful, although its ratings are on the decline and the median age for the show is about 60.

Most of the budget for this show goes to the salaries of Regis and Kelly, and most of the viewers are just happy it is on at all. They still have a daily segment that features a magic device called a "telephone".

It's still in WS SD in my market:( It must be tape delayed(or whatever they use to delay broadcast now days) any my local ABC affiliate can't do HD unless it's live network feed:(
