I WANT MORE 01-05-09, 08:24 PM The 38th Fiesta Bowl on FOX HD
#10 Ohio State Buckeyes (10-2) vs. #3 Texas Longhorns (11-1)
Live from University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale, AZ
January 5, 2009
8pm ET
720p & DD5.1
Did not see a thread started for this.
Picture looks soft to me and Stereo only on D*398
Must be a D* problem with the audio. DD on my cable system.
E-A-G-L-E-S 01-05-09, 08:32 PM D*
WTXF
Allentown, PA
Sound seems bottlenecked bad.(muffled)(especially with voices) Getting DD though.
PQ is just o.k., seen much better recently from fox and others.
Some swimming grass, which I hardly ever see anymore with HD sports.
An overall D+ grade - imo.
Is it just me or is this game very dim? Is the stadium poorly lit?
Johnny5.1 01-05-09, 08:34 PM Interesting, the black annoyance above the scorebar is now a lighter transparent tint. I dont remember if it was like that for their other bowl games.
Picture looks soft in Savannah, Ga from WTGS via OTA. I hope they have the A-team package on Thursday!
I WANT MORE 01-05-09, 08:36 PM DD for me now also. Don't know what the issue was. This game is in the same stadium as the Cardinals vs Falcons playoff game. I thought that game looked very good.
E-A-G-L-E-S 01-05-09, 08:40 PM That game looked 10x better than this game.
I WANT MORE 01-05-09, 08:42 PM If I am not mistaken NBC did that game. Did you ever think you would say that NBC did a better job than FOX for Football?

Looks sharp and vibrant...No issues either channel...
E-A-G-L-E-S 01-05-09, 08:50 PM Wow, went to SD there for a minute there around the 5:00 minute mark.....so much dimmer than the Cardinals game and with worse sound.
Sigh.
Just got a nice sound "mistake" of a burst of noise....damn that was loud!(1:51 mark)
This is the first time I have "ever" gone out of my calibrated movie/cinema mode for a football game and it isn't even a sunny weekend afternoon game.
tigerfan33 01-05-09, 08:52 PM Yep. Very soft picture. Not near the quality of picture compared to the Orange Bowl.
Let's hope that the Championship game pq on Thursday is on par with the Orange Bowl since it is the same place.
E-A-G-L-E-S 01-05-09, 08:54 PM I didn't watch the VT-Cinn game, but this is not a good sign tonight.
I'll hope for the best for that game.
I WANT MORE 01-05-09, 08:56 PM who did the orange bowl?
fox
Can someone get FOX to stop with the Nissan Z commercials? They have already shown enough (of the same, exact commercial) to meet and exceed the advertising requirements for one of the bowl game's sponsors!
This is a rhetorical question as I know no one reading these forums can actally get FOX to do this...more of a rant...
Rocknrlk 01-05-09, 08:59 PM Don't you just hate it when the commercials have a better picture than the game....way to go fox.
XCgeoff 01-05-09, 09:03 PM I've been underwhelmed with FOX's camera work/production management. There were 3 plays in the 1st qtr that they missed part or all of the play because they were zoomed in on some player or fans in the stand or taking too long with the replay. Do they really need to zoom in on a player's helmet until it fills my whole 50" display?
I WANT MORE 01-05-09, 09:03 PM Is that McCoy's sister or girlfriend with his parents?

I thought it was just the PQ on my 50" Samsung DLP in the front room. I'm gonna try the plasma in the bedroom and see if it helps any.
Is that McCoy's sister or girlfriend with his parents?
I dunno, but his mom is kinda hot!
In Knoxville, TN the pq is horrible, especially pre game. This makes me mad as a Gator fan. Thursday night's broadcast will suck.
And I'm watching on a Pioneer ELITE.
Can someone fill me in (or point me where the info is) as to why FOX sucks so bad for sports PQ?? CBS,IMHO, is so much sharper.
I WANT MORE 01-05-09, 09:09 PM I dunno, but his mom is kinda hot!
:-)
GB Randy 01-05-09, 09:10 PM In Green Bay it is only available as a SD signal :(
Directv or OTA ....wtf....?

No offense but I hope the game on Thursday sucks for you for reasons other than the picture quality.
Splicer010 01-05-09, 09:11 PM Man...What garbage are you guys watching??? Your problems are undoubtedly affiliate related...The FOX video/audio is top notch here...Am I the only one???
No offense but I hope the game on Thursday sucks for you for reasons other than the picture quality.
No offense taken :) It should be a good one.
WFXT (Boston) Comcast Plymouth, PQ is excellent here but the audio is a little muffled especially on the guy doing the color commentary, the play by play annoucer is not bad but not great.
I give PQ an A
I give AQ a C
I WANT MORE 01-05-09, 09:17 PM No offense taken :) It should be a good one.
Based on recent history I am not very confident.
E-A-G-L-E-S 01-05-09, 09:18 PM Maybe our locals are stomping all over this game?
Because I'm WTXF as well(Philly) and as you can see from my posts it doesn't look or sound good.

The Philly / Minn playoff game skipped in and out of HD for me yesterday....now Fox is only in SD.... sigh.... Might just be my local affiliate, but this sucks.
They best have this fixed come Thursday.
Based on recent history I am not very confident.
It should be fun to watch either way. But it will come down to who can make more stops. I have a feeling both offenses will bring it.

Could be, if this was a normal NFL game during the regular season wouldn't think much of it. But their BCS games have all looked great.
E-A-G-L-E-S 01-05-09, 09:38 PM Wow, Colt McCoy's mom is attractive, but that blonde is hot.
BarryB1124 01-05-09, 09:38 PM Cablevision WNYW NY. PQ is terrible.
MixItUp 01-05-09, 09:53 PM Man...What garbage are you guys watching??? Your problems are undoubtedly affiliate related...The FOX video/audio is top notch here...Am I the only one???
Watching In LA on KTTV
The audio is in and out and muffled.
No crowd noise.
Its supposed to be sellout of college football fans.
ATL-PHX was much more vibrant
Splicer010 01-05-09, 10:21 PM I feel bad for you guys...:(
rkunces 01-05-09, 10:24 PM Cablevision WNYW NY. PQ is terrible.
WNYW on Directv looks bad too. As did the Eagles/Vikings game. The main camera is very pixelated.
Splicer010 01-05-09, 10:26 PM Wow, Colt McCoy's mom is attractive, but that blonde is hot.
That blonde is smokin' hot...
MixItUp 01-05-09, 10:37 PM Man, How many snaps are they gonna miss
MixItUp 01-05-09, 10:41 PM What is the point of having a retractable roof if you keep it closed?
Cardinal game and fiesta bowl
weak
PQ - 7/10
AQ - 5/10
Horrible, I'm in Orlando, FL watching OTA on WOFL-DT 35.1
BarryB1124 01-05-09, 10:51 PM WNYW on Directv looks bad too. As did the Eagles/Vikings game. The main camera is very pixelated.
Yes, I agree. From my end also the Viking game had very similar PQ to tonight's game.
raddiux 01-05-09, 11:11 PM OTA broadcast in 720p. Decent quality, little macroblocking.

Is this her? http://larrybrownsports.com/college-football/colt-mccoys-girlfriend-rachel-glandorf-hot/3296
CharlieB-oz 01-05-09, 11:18 PM Good PQ and AQ in New Orleans OTA. I have two categories that are better: "very good" and "excellent."
LCDSpazz 01-05-09, 11:21 PM The networks that do 1080i sports always seem to look better to me (CBS/NBC) than the ones that do 720p (FOX/ABC). Maybe it's just my set (newer Samsung LCD), local issues, or something else...
Once again it just feels like Fox is mailing in the production. Everything seems half-assed. The PQ is good not great on WFXT Boston via Comcast.
coyoteaz 01-05-09, 11:39 PM Marginal PQ here on KDFW too. No blocking and not much mosquito noise, but not much in the way of detail either. Agree with the earlier poster that the bar at the top is much lighter than other games. It's still a waste of space, but not as bad as before.
The quality of broadcasts can't really be an affiliate problem on a Fox station (short of not being in HD at all) thanks to the splicer, unless you happen to be watching an affiliate that reprocesses the output of the splicer, which is very unlikely since there are only one or two out there.
ESPN taking over the BCS games can't happen soon enough. Fox just doesn't have the dedication to or experience with college football that ESPN does, and the productions suffer as a result.
MixItUp 01-05-09, 11:57 PM It does seem as if FOX gave up on this one
sprint67 01-06-09, 12:21 AM Well at least the product on the field was far superior to the crap Fox broadcasts.
What a great game, when we got to see the plays that is.
arrabyla30 01-06-09, 12:34 AM ESPN taking over the BCS games can't happen soon enough. Fox just doesn't have the dedication to or experience with college football that ESPN does, and the productions suffer as a result.
We'll just have to deal with that constant, annoying Bottom Line on ESPN.
yudaman33 01-06-09, 12:36 AM While the broadcast and the coverage was decent,at best, the game was quite a phenomenal one for football fans. Texas may not get a share of the national title. But they sure put one heck of a clutch performance to break the hearts of Buckeye fans. Can't wait til ESPN snatches the BCS games from FOX. A network covering the crucial bowl games without any regular season NCAA games doesn't deserve them.
coyoteaz 01-06-09, 05:20 AM We'll just have to deal with that constant, annoying Bottom Line on ESPN.
I suppose. Maybe they'll take a lesson from MNF and leave the bottomline off for most of the game. Even better, maybe they'll keep the current scorebar at the top, and ditch the bottom line and all other graphics during live action. Either way, at least they won't have to drop into widescreen SD every time they want to overlay that stuff like Fox does.
steverobertson 01-06-09, 07:21 AM I agree with others Fox doing these games just does not cut it for me. I can't wait for ESPN to take these over. PQ through D* in Boston was awful. I think Fox has 1 more year left?
I WANT MORE 01-06-09, 07:39 AM Is this her? http://larrybrownsports.com/college-football/colt-mccoys-girlfriend-rachel-glandorf-hot/3296
That's her. Oh My.
Is FOX usually this bad with the pro stuff that it broadcasts? Do the pros not use a hurry up offense anymore?
I 've never heard of those two announcers on this game -- is that the best FOX can do? How many plays did we miss because the announcers were blabbing about nothing, trying to work in promos/commercials, or the production crew falling asleep at the switch. Ugh. FOX should not be doing college football.
Wow, Colt McCoy's mom is attractive, but that blonde is hot.
Both are good looking... but I don’t' think his girlfriend is that hot. Maybe because I'm black.. I don’t' know.
jimp2244 01-06-09, 09:41 AM If I am not mistaken NBC did that game. Did you ever think you would say that NBC did a better job than FOX for Football?Yes. Every day of the week.
I thought PQ looked good. I remember being disappointed with PQ two years ago at the same stadium between OSU and UF. I thought this was good by comparison. Maybe I've seen too many Fox #2 crew games were the colors were off badly.
BTW, could the sound issues be from the voice of Tim Ryan? :D That man is hard to listen to, not sure why Fox loves him so much.
PQ via D* in Houston was good. Audio was off by about a second -- not that I cared to listen to those two announcers. How many plays did Fox miss while showing the Texas band ??? What was with the fixation on the Gatorade jug ??? I sure hope Fox has their A-Team in Miami Thursday night.
GO GATORS !!!
McDonoughDawg 01-06-09, 11:32 AM The missed plays are unexplainable. IF FOX thinks TX runs a quick hurry up offense, wait until OU takes the field. It should be great, seeing all the half plays we're going to get Thursday.
FOX IS A JOKE COVERING COLLEGE GAMES!!.
steverobertson 01-06-09, 11:33 AM Any chance Fox will give up next year's broadcast and let ESPN have it?
jtthasportfreak 01-07-09, 07:14 AM What the hell did Matt Vasgergian say about the band's attire ? It was so random... never mind this is pure random genius...
Matt V: "What was the difference in the the battle of the bands competition on Friday at the Scottsdale Waterfront? The Winner in the battle of the bands: Night Ranger."
Followed by...
"If its a battle of the band uniforms then Texas wins because those folks all look like they just got through loading the family into a log ride at Wally World"
I WANT MORE 01-07-09, 08:26 AM Any chance Fox will give up next year's broadcast and let ESPN have it?
If I am not mistaken that is a done deal. ESPN was awarded the BCS contract and I believe it begins next year. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
mikey mo 01-07-09, 12:30 PM You guys are all correct. This was just one badly produced football game. I never thought I would make this comment.
LCDSpazz 01-07-09, 01:15 PM If I am not mistaken that is a done deal. ESPN was awarded the BCS contract and I believe it begins next year. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
ESPN deal starts in 2011.
steverobertson 01-07-09, 01:17 PM ESPN deal starts in 2011.
I wish they could buy Fox out for next year's coverage. Fox really ruins what has been a very entertaing CFB season. I am no ESPN fan but CFB is the one thing they still do right in my opinion
