View Full Version : Hooking up 5 HR22-100 DVR's

I have a new slimline dish with a SWM8 hooked up to 5 HR22-100 DVR's. When it was originally installed (a few months ago) I only had 4 tv's so the installer did not get the 5th DVR up and running. Now I can only get 4 of the DVR's to work. When I try to setup the 5th it gets no signal. I had a technician out today that tried to stack 2 SWM8's because he said that a single SWM8 will only run 4 HR22-100's. He could not get this to work. He said I may have to install a 2nd dish. Any ideas?

Also, the power inserter has an "out to SWM" and an "out to IRD". The original installer only had a wire connected to the "out to SWM" to the SWM power port. Does it matter that nothing is connected to the "out to IRD'?

You can stack the SWM8's, he's not doing something correctly.

You don't need an IRD hooked to the power supply, it's just marked so you don't install it backwards.

Check out the Directv Installation section over at dbstalk.com for the specific things need to stack two SWM8's.

You can't stack SWM8s, but you can run them in parallel. You need four wide-band splitters, power passing on one or two ports, in the lines between the dish and the SWM8s. Just make sure that the cables from the splitters are connected to the same inputs on each SWM8.

Another solution if you do not wish to use the 4 splitters would be to get an older WB68 which can be had for $10 or less and run the 4 RG6 runs to that input. Input SWM8 #1 to output 1-4 and SWM8 #2 to outputs 5-8.

Right, had my wording wrong, meant to run them in parallel using splitters, they can't be stacked.

Yes, that would work fine also. Good solution if you have a WB68 lying around.

So, I was searching for my answer and I think this is it. But, I would like to confirm!

I have 7 DTV HD DVRs and a few other odd ball DTV DVRs (HD tivos, non HD tivos etc). I am looking to get into the SWM solution for a few rooms that have one cable feed only, but I need more than 16 total tuner connections. To be frank, I need a less expensive way than the $450 weaknees solution (http://www.weaknees.com/swm-directv.php). So, I was thinking of a hybrid solution.

I have a 6x16 in my attic now (Zinwell MS6X16WB-Z) from DTV. Since the SWM8 is designed for the 5 LNB dish and needs 4 inputs feeding it, can I run 4 outs from my 6x16 zinwell and create an SWM pool of ports (8 total) and also non SWM (12 total)?

If this works, I assume adding 2 SWM8's to my 6x16 would work also? This would mean 16 SWM ports and 8 non SWM ports.

One SWM8 is about $160 and if this would work is a less expensive solution since I do not need SWM connections to all devices.

lol. So looked some more and found out that I can get what I need using 4 high frequency splitters (http://www.weaknees.com/pdf/swm-wb68.pdf). Wish I could just add them without the splitters, but it will still give me the same end result. Thanks.

Based on the posts above, feeding two SWM8's off your 6x16 should work fine.

Yes, cascading one or two (or even four!) SWM8s from a WB616 is fine.
