View Full Version : Law and Order: CI
davcole 01-08-09, 09:26 AM Do we have a date yet for the new season?
Originally the USA Network sight said November, then it said Jan 2009, now just 2009.
Anyone have any detais of when to expect this? Is it debuting on USA or NBC?
No date yet apparently.
They're doing their best to kill it off I think (others will argue that NBC Universal loves CI but they sure don't behave like they do).
dad1153 01-08-09, 05:51 PM "CI" has undergone a number of executive producer changes over the past year, plus they couldn't film the episodes fast-enough to run 16 uninterrupted weeks alternating between D'Onofrio and Jeff Goldblum (taking over for Chris Noth) had the show premiered in Nov. of last year. For details click here: http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/new-law-order-ci-season-delayed/.
Rest assured, USA and NBC-Universal don't want to kill "CI." USA owns the show, its their highest-rated original (in total households, not the demo) and they stand to profit from its continued success. When USA finally debuts the new season you'll get back-to-back Goren and Goldblum wacky detective goodness for 16 straight weeks. That's worth waiting for. :)
davcole 01-08-09, 07:10 PM Thank you for the update!!
jimp2244 09-07-09, 09:08 PM When did Law and Order: CI adopt the theme song from Law and Order: Trial by Jury? The old CI theme was a slower version of the well-known L&O theme. The much more "upbeat" one used tonight is (I believe) the exact same theme used in the "Trial by Jury" series that aired years ago and only lasted about 13 episodes.

When it moved to USA from NBC. That season, I believe fall 2007 the theme changed. I think it was because it became a USA show rather than an NBC show.
I like the theme. I liked TBJ and was disappointed when it was canceled.

I like the theme. I liked TBJ and was disappointed when it was canceled. Thanks! I enjoyed Trial by Jury as well - especially the looks at the "inner workings" of the trial process. Interesting that they took that theme and used it for CI but I guess there are few of us that actually even remember that Trial by Jury ever existed, let alone remember the theme!
dad1153 09-09-09, 11:12 AM ^^^ The few, the proud, the fanatical "CI" viewers. That's us! ;)

“Law & Order: CI” Ditching D’Onofrio, Erbe, Bogosian
By Roger Friedman in The Hollywod Reporter’s “Showbiz 411” blog
It’s shake-up time for “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.”
Sources from the “L&O” galaxy say that stars Vincent D’Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe, and Eric Bogosian are all expected to be phased out at various points during the series’ upcoming ninth season. Julianne Nicholson has already departed because she is having a baby. Executive producer Dick Wolf is turning to Jeff Goldblum, who joined the cast last season, to remain as lead detective in the series along with Saffron Burrows, who was recently cast to replace Nicholson as Goldblum’s partner.
It’s a big change for a show that has weathered a lot of casting changes since it began in 2001. D’Onofrio and Erbe have been there since the beginning, while Bogosian joined in 2006. Since then, the original pair have had to make room for Nicholson and Chris Noth, who left last year. Goldblum arrived in 2008.
Details about D’Onofrio, Erbe and Bogosian’s exit are still unclear as the actors’ deals are being worked out. The network only recently renewed the Wolf Films/Universal Cable Prods. series for a ninth season, slated to premiere in late spring with a two-parter.
How interesting that Wolf has decided to go this way since D’Onofrio, while erratic, has been very popular. But “L&O:CI” is a USA Network show now after running on sister channel NBC. And USA, insiders point out, likes lighter fare when it comes to its shows. Goldblum is more in the tradition of Tony Shalhoub’s “Monk” than D’Onofrio.
While D’Onofrio is departing as a regular, it is possible for him to reprise his character in guest stints.
“Law & Order” just keeps chugging along in its various guises. The names change but the music remains the same.

THis is a shame the only episodes I really watch are the ones with Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe. I never can get into the show unless those two are the main (or only) detectives.....Ive been catching the replays off the show on various channels and the vibe\chemistry of the show doesnt seem to flow without those two. I guess they were too "deep" for the liking of USA :(
dad1153 09-25-09, 11:57 AM As the biggest fan of anything "L&O" in this board (can anyone else here claim to have seen EVERY episode from EVERY "L&O" show -minus "Trial and Jury"- at least twice?) I'm surprisingly OK with this. I would have kept Erbe's character teamed-up with Goldblum's though, these two worked perfectly in their two episodes together late last season.
It's obvious that money just isn't there to keep the veterans around, and that the Goren character that's there right now isn't the goofy idiot savant that the show started with in 2001 (which now would fit perfectly with the "Psych" and "Monk" style of show USA Network does). Since the characters will be phased out and not just be thrown out without a clue of their whereabouts (the way many a "L&O" character have just disappeared from one season to the next) I'm looking forward to seeing Bobby, Eames and Ross exit One Police Plaza in a blaze of NYC politics (or personal) glory. Since the show has established plenty of motives/reasons for the department to want to get rid of Goren over the years I wouldn't be surprised if either Ross or Eames (or both) resign from their jobs as a show of solidarity with Bobby. It's weird that, except for the short-lived "Trial By Jury," every other "L&O" has been around for almost a decade or longer and it still feels odd to say goodbye to the regulars after all these years. Oh well, we'll always have reruns. :(
Shame that Saffron Burrows is becoming Goldblum's new partner though, I was hoping (if they didn't team-up Nichols with Eames) they'd bring back Alicia Witt's Falacci character that worked so well with Chris Noth's Logan for the four episodes they were together a couple of years ago. Alas, money talks and the cast walks.
Well....I'll take a wait and see approach. It would certainly be cheaper if they went back to just the two primary detectives instead of having two teams. Didn't they go that route because D'Onofrio was overworked or overstressed?
D'Onofrio is an enjoyable actor to watch work, but I grew to dislike the Goren character of late.
Kathryn Erbe will be missed.
Change can be good in the L&O universe.
dad1153 09-25-09, 09:04 PM Change can be good in the L&O universe.
But which "L&O" universe are you talking about? On the mothership "L&O" change is a constant and the format (cops catch bad guy in the first half; prosecutors take them to court during the second half) assures that new people can rotate in and out without problem. But "SVU" and "CI," despite sharing the "L&O" name and production trademarks (i.e. no goofy over-the-top CGI effects, no dream sequences or crazy stuff, etc.), have been impervious to major cast changes and format shifts over the years.
"CI" brought in alternating detectives, a new captain (Ross over Deakins), got rid of ADA Carver (now on ABC's "Flash Forward") and (as of late 2006) a shift toward "CSI"-type flash... but through all that change we still had Goren and Eames as constants and reminders of "CI's" 2001 foundation. "SVU" has really shifted away from emphasis on depraved rape and child molestation (though these are still the starting points of most cases) and into an almost 'super cops'-type cop drama in which everything (terrorism, corporate greed, government bureocracy, etc.) co-mingles with the personal lives of the detectives. Four characters (Benson, Stabler, Capt. Cragen and Det. Munch) have been there from the beginning, and one (Det. Tutuola) joined in the 2nd season. Shoot, NBC could have gotten rid of Hargitay and Benson to the tune of almost $400K an episode EACH (I bet they regret that now that Wednesday's ratings for "SVU" were in the tank) but it couldn't do or risk the ire and viewership loss of many fans of the unspoken Stabler-Benson relationship.
What I'm trying to say is that change has been a constant in the "Law & Order" mothership, but in the "CI" and "SVU" universes it has been anything but since audiences still like and relate to the lead detectives that have been with these shows since the very beginning. And for the record, the Goren-Eames "CI" episodes on USA this year always scored better/bigger ratings than the Nichols-Wheeler one's. Coincidence?
URFloorMatt 09-25-09, 09:40 PM It sounds like the choice was between cancelling it without a ninth season or attempting to do a ninth season at significantly reduced cost, which for a show like CI means purging the cast. Either way, Criminal Intent as we knew it was dead.
You gave us a run down of different changes within the L&O universe. I'll repeat.
Change can be good in the L&O universe.
I think Jeff Goldblum could carry the series if given the chance. Will he? <shrug>
I'll take a wait and see approach.
Edit: Chris Noth could definitely have carried the series if they'd turned it over to him.
Rammitinski 09-26-09, 02:49 AM A lot of women liked D'Onofrio's character.
Somehow, I just don't think Goldblum is going to fit the bill as an acceptable replacement for many of them.
davcole 09-26-09, 06:38 PM Count me as one that's suprised that Goren's character has lasted so long. Personally Goren had started to grate on my nerves years ago when it was just the one detective team, however I admit since the rotating cast has gone into effect, i've appreciated him more. Eames is hand in hand attached to Goren so though I like her character, she won't be too terribly missed.
I've never been a fan of Julia Nicholson's and was actually glad when Alicia Witt's Falachi character replaced her those episodes, that's why I was so suprised when Nicholson returned. I am saddened to see them let go Bogosian's character. I felt him an improvement over Deakins character.
I admit to NOT being a fan of Jeff Goldblume's character and really not in favor of him being the lead detective. I really miss Mike Logan. He had always been my favorite L&0 character anyway.
TheWinstonWolf 03-23-10, 09:10 PM Big time bump here but I wanted to get you guys back talking about it. The Goren character is finally going to come to an end (along with Eames) this season.
We're 8 days away from the premiere and I cannot wait to see what kind of send off they are going to get - should be an epic episode
TheWinstonWolf 04-04-10, 08:56 PM Any of you dudes end up watching the premiere? Great, great episode but poor captain Ross.
We're still coming up on Goren's last eps, was cool seeing him work with Goldblum though in the same room.
Funny how just as their characters exit they remind us of how good they used to be. Goren w/ some fire back in his belly.
Is David Zayas (temporary/replacement captain) just passing through or what? He's entertaining.
dad1153 04-06-10, 09:30 AM ^^^ Yep, Zayas is guest-starring for two episodes before the new Major Case Squad Captain (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) takes over. And that's fine by me because I want Zayas back where he belongs: Miami Metro police department over at Showtime's "Dexter" playing Batista. :)
Somehow I held on watching the season premiere until last night (I didn't want to wait a whole week between episodes) even though I knew from reading previews (and because Goldblum spilled the plot the night before the premiere on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon") what would happen. Sad to loose Capt. Ross like that (his last scenes with Goren and Eames, in retrospect, were classic "L&O": work-related and not the least bit romanticized) but it has given the detectives (the three in that whole squad room that apparently give a damn about their captain getting killed... seriously, what are are all the other Major Case detectives doing while Goren, Eames and Nichols bust their ass trying to find Ross' killers?) some of their best and most intense scenes in years. Shame Goldblum didn't get added to the opening title (like last year's "Revolution" episode where Kathy Erbe and Jeff Goldblum were featured in a revamped-for-just-one-episode title sequence) and was reduced to 'special guest star' status, but it doesn't matter since he's about to become the face of "CI." Also, no mention of Wheeler not being a detective there anymore. Maybe when Zach gets his new partner an off-hand remark will clue us why Wheeler left (probably, like Julianne Nicholson, they'll just say the new mom chose family over work).
Can't wait for tonight's swan song for Goren and Eames even though, to be perfectly honest, Warren Leight's script for the season premire was convoluted as hell and all over the map (figuratively and literally). International arms dealers, overzealous Feds, diplomatic shenanigans... lots of people talking and dying but nothing really interesting is happening when the detectives aren't on-screen. "CI" has always focused on the criminal but in recent years (since Rene' Balcer departed to take over the mothership) the "CI" bad guys just haven't been as colorful and interesting as in years past. But hey, who knows? Maybe now that they're starting fresh in two weeks the "CI" writers will settle down and give us crazy-cool nuts for Zach and his new partner to badger around. Zach Nichols could even get his own Nicole Wallace-caliber nemesis for the ultimate battle of the weirdo quirky minds. :)
MSmith83 04-13-10, 11:03 PM It has been a quality season thus far. It is a shame to no longer have Goren, Eames and Ross, but good writing and acting, like what I've witnessed tonight, will keep the show flowing just fine.
dad1153 04-14-10, 09:31 AM Though the first solo episode with Goldblum and the new captain wasn't perfect (way too many shots of Nichols doing absolutely nothing and way too much of that Bruce Springstein-like working-class man song) it wasn't bad either. The "L&O" shows are all about the cases at hand and the location ambiance that New York's many colorful locations can provide. Last night's it was all about Broad Channel (a real place: http://www.broadchannelny.com/) and Kevin Conway's magnificent guest star performance as Jackie because, frankly, the plot and revelations were fairly predictable. It's been a while since "CI" had a truly memorable bad guy and Jackie was a great foil for Nichols: street smart, ruthless (but not cartoony) and someone I'd like to see the show bring back for another guest appearance (though not as a Nicole Wallace-type nemesis to Nichols, that'd be dumb). Saffron Burrows' character is quietly growing on me with just two episodes (although "Broad Channel" went a little too far in trying to make her seem smarter than everybody around her; Kathy Erbe's Eames managed to do that without coming across as a show-off) and it's too early to pass judgement on Mastrantonio's new captain. A little disappointed they didn't mention anything about what happened to Eames (did she quit Major Case or are we to assume she's still around but not seen?) but that's OK. If ratings hold up (this episode is the big test to determine whether Goren/Eames fans are abandoning "CI" or not) the show should be fine. :)
humdinger70 04-14-10, 11:41 AM The opening credits for the new stars of L&O:CI are definitely NOT 4:3 safe, as they were in the past, so this program is either going to have issues for people who still have 4:3 screens or will be shown in letterbox format (at least on USA, don't know what will happen when they appear on NBC).
dad1153 04-14-10, 12:27 PM Both NBC and USA show "CI" (and all the other "L&O" and/or widescreen shows) letterboxed on 4:3 TV sets.
humdinger70 04-14-10, 01:44 PM Both NBC and USA show "CI" (and all the other "L&O" and/or widescreen shows) letterboxed on 4:3 TV sets.
That's good to know.
dad1153 04-21-10, 06:41 AM Decent episode of "CI" last night, although it covered fairly familiar ground (especially if you've seen Season 2 episode "Tomorrow").
Not much mystery who the killer was (I knew it right away) and, since the perp left incriminating evidence left and right, it fell down to the acting to save the episode from being boring. Fortunately the main guest actors were decent in their one-dimensional roles (mousy loner, a**hole teacher, slutty talented one, etc.) and Saffron Burrows continues to impress me. It dawned on me while watching "Delicate" that her Serena Stevens character hasn't smiled once (that I've seen) which should make the eventual reason for the character to smile from ear-to-ear all the more memorable. Mastrantonio's character continues to be kind-of bland and non-descriptive captain (shades of Dianne Wiest's DA Nora Lewin from early-2000 "Law & Order") just barking orders. At least she seems more inclined to let the detectives do their thing rather than questioning why they want to go their own way (a hallmark of the series during the Deakins/Ross eras). Again though, what's the deal with the pointless Nichols close-ups? We get it, he's the Zen detective and heir to Goren's get-in-the-perp's-head approach at interrogation. But do we need a close-up of Goldblum's face when he's not doing anything other than reacting?
My hopes for "CI" are improving with each episode. It may not be the "CI" we grew up watching for over a decade but, at it's heart, it's still a decent (though now unremarkable) "L&O" show.

The Future Of USA's 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent' Still In Limbo
May Return For Final Hurrah Sans Jeff Goldblum
By Nellie Andreeva, Deadline.com's 'TV Editor' - August 3rd, 2010
There has been a lot of speculation about the future of Law & Order: Criminal Intent on USA in the past month or so. I hear the network looked at a number of scenarios, including a full-season pickup, two-season pickup and a partial season pickup until settling on the idea for an eight-episode order for what would be the show's final season. I hear that a final pickup decision, which largely hinges on making the economics work, will be made in the next couple of days, and the network is looking to bring some of the show's original players, including Vincent D'Onofrio.
Meanwhile, Jeff Goldblum, who starred on the show last season, has decided not to return. The options on all the actors formally expired on July 31 after being extended by a month on June 30 when they were originally up. For Goldblum, the decision coincided with an agency switch. He has left Gersh and signed with CAA. Goldblum took on the role of Law & Order: CI's new leading man last fall when, in a major cast overhaul, original stars D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe exited, along with veteran Eric Bogosian. Goldblum now stars in Neil Simon's The Prisoner of Second Avenue at London's Old Vic. Law & Order: CI, which originated on NBC, was the second spinoff from the mothership Law & Order series, which was canceled by NBC in May after 20 seasons. Still going on NBC is Law & Order: SVU, joined by new addition Law & Order: Los Angeles.

DeeKaye07 08-04-10, 07:43 PM Ugh. As much as I've always liked L&O: CI, they kind of lost me after Vincent D'Onofrio left...not that I don't like Jeff Goldblum, but it just wasn't the same without Goren. I don't know how they can save it now, unless they bring D'Onofrio back. Too bad, it was a good show.

dad1153 09-21-10, 04:42 PM ^^^ Yeah, without Vincent the show might as well... wait a minute...

mreedelp 09-22-10, 07:44 AM They better get Kathryn Erbe back too.
Unfortunately, I'm afraid they will do to his character what they did with Jeff Goldlum's character and just change it completely. I couldn't watch last season after the first few episodes. Goldblum was supposed to be quirky and was the first go around. Last season he was just boring--none of the quirks he was brought in with.
eddy_winds 09-22-10, 10:21 AM they better get kathryn erbe back too.
:)
last season he was just boring
+1
Kathryn Erbe returns to `Law & Order: CI'
AP - Associated Press
LOS ANGELES – USA Network says Kathryn Erbe is coming back to "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" for the drama's 10th and final season.
Erbe will be reunited with Vincent D'Onofrio, who's also returning to the crime drama for its last year.
Series creator Dick Wolf said Friday that he's grateful Erbe agreed to rejoin what Wolf called one of TV's best detective teams.
Eight new episodes of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" starring Erbe as New York police Detective Eames and D'Onofrio as Detective Goren will air starting in 2011. The debut date was not announced.
Karl Beem 03-02-11, 07:48 PM Will Goldblum be back?
dad1153 03-02-11, 09:56 PM Nope, and neither are Saffron Burrows and Toni Montana's sister as the Captain. ;):p It will be Goren, Eames and a new captain (played by veteran character actor Jay O. Sanders) for eight episodes. Then "CI" goes into rerun heaven, i.e. USA network. :(
