View Full Version : Digitalnow PCI DNTV Live Pro with Suse

I wonder if anybody got Digitalnow PCI DNTV Live Pro card running with Suse. kdetv can't find any channels, but card detected correctly by the system. The card was working OK in WinXP box with Live! s/w package. I wanted to move the card from Win XP box to low power setup with Pentium-M 2.0MHz running Suse10.3. Everything works fine in the package, but as my Linux knowledge is very limited I use only s/w that was downloaded with Suse. Pls help.

If you would, please open a terminal and post the output of the following commands so we can verify that the card is being detected properly:
lspci -v
lsmod
dmesg
Place them inside "CODE" tags or attach them as txt files.

Also, are you planning to use the card with mythtv? Most of us use ubuntu variants, but there are some people here running suse that would be able to help you get it installed. From there, we can help you configure it.

Out of curiosity, which video card are you using? EDIT: nevermind this, I'll be able to tell from lspci. der.

What do you get with;
[wes@wes2 ~]$ ls /dev/dvb
adapter0/ adapter1/ adapter2/ adapter3/

Should see at least one adapter. If you do, the card should be working. It may require a firmware file placed in /lib/firmware. Not familiar with the card or DVB-T, but it should be simliar in operation to ATSC dvb devices used here in the US.

Also, I can't tell if the patch (http://www.digitalnow.com.au/DNTV/dntv-pro-5.diff) has been applied to the cx88 code, but since it's from 2005 and the card appears to be detected correctly, I'm assuming it has.

The next step would be to test it with mplayer, but you'll prob have to do a channel scan first. Since I've never set up a DVB card, I'll hand this one off. There are plenty of people here with tons more experience in this area than me, and I know they'll be able to help get you up and running.

It will definitely work, though. :)

A wild guess is that you need to comfigure kdetv for digital dvb. I think it's trying to find analog cars above, but I haven't done any analog in years. I'll see if I can install kdetv and make any sense of it.

Yep you're right, I can say I got only analog channels so far without sound. PQ is much worse than I had in Win XP running Live! s/w. I'll try to download mythtv. Thanks.

kdetv is an analogue only app. Its not particularly sophisticated, but you can adjust some setting such as interlacing and other such filters. I don't think kdetv has been worked on for some time. For better quality analogue, try tvtime ... unfortunately, I believe that development on it too has languished.

As for the sound, open up Kmix, and unmute the input for your sound card. If you are not using a pass through cable for sound (i.e. running from your tv card to your sound card), then its another issue --- namely kdetv does not support audio DMA (although there appears to be a setting for it in its configuration). In which case, you'd have to use an app that supports audio DMA (like myth, mplayer, ) through way of alsa, or use helper apps like arecord or sox.

For digital, try Kaffeine. Go into Yast and setup the Packman repositiory. Then remove the crippled versions of the xine engine and whatever else that ship with openSUSE (for proprietary codec legal mumble jumble crappy reasons) and replace them with the versions available in the Packman repo. Grab the dvb pluggin for kaffeine too.

As for unconvoluted solutions for newcomers, it looks like someone has set up a one-click type install for all the "restricted" formats etc. I suspect that it likely installs some stuff you really don't necessarily need (like the w32codecs for example, given ffmpeg is capable of playback for just about everything these days), but no harm either.
