View Full Version : Recommend me Some bookshelf speakers
Danny Ci 01-14-09, 08:46 PM Ok people, i have read just about all , i could,
and i have made the decision to purchase either
the Onkyo TXSR606, or the Pioneer VSX1018AHK
has for speakers, that's were it get's complicated, here's why,
i will be moving in MAY or JUNE, into an apartment, and i will not be
able to blast away with my Home Theater, therefore no SUB, or
very little use of it, so i am aiming at good Bookshelf Speakers
that will be able to supply enough bass, and quality, i need a 5.1 speaker system,
the SUB can be on the weak side, the rest good quality,
and a budget of about $800-900 for speakers, will await your brand and model suggestions.
Thanks.
The consensus in this board is that the Ascend Sierra being the best at $900. I'd probably differ if I've heard them. Anyway, what kind of sound quality are you looking for and what kind of musics will be played?
I haven't heard the Ascends, but the word is that they are very good. I may be checking them out myself soon.
A close second for me at the moment are the Era D5s. These are very respectable in the bass department for bookshelves.
BoB/335 01-14-09, 10:34 PM I have heard that these are good and have very good bass range for a bookshelf.

Raymond Leggs 01-14-09, 10:35 PM why would you want a weak sub?
fozzybear 01-14-09, 11:08 PM I love my Sierra-1's, and they will go deeper than the Axiom's that were mentioned if you wanted bass.
Hey how bout this one?

Eminent Tech LFT-16 with planar tweeters.
rick240 01-15-09, 09:32 AM Bookshelves will not give you true bass. They can give you decent mid-lows but you will need a sub to give you bass. You will just have to learn what volume to set it at, and when to use it in the apartment (and maybe get a SubDude).
As to recommendations, my standard response these days for best value and great sound:
- fronts, KEF iQ3 $250 from Vanns (http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/item/features/542300225/kef-iq3-black-ash?s_c=site_search)
- centre, KEF iQ2 $150 from Vanns (http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/item/features/548250679/kef-iq2c-black-ash?s_c=site_search)
- rears, KEF iQ1$200 from Vanns (http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/item/features/542300051/kef-iq1-black-ash?s_c=site_search)
- sub, PA-120 $230 from eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/H100-BIC-Acoustech-H-100-NEW-MODEL-PA-120-Subwoofer_W0QQitemZ310114386732QQcmdZViewItemQQptZSpeakers_S ubwoofers?hash=item310114386732&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1234%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1308 %7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50)
Great 5.1 system for $830 delivered.
jakewash 01-15-09, 05:21 PM Is that budget for a full 5.1 or just speakers for now and sub later.
Danny Ci 01-15-09, 07:36 PM To answer your questions, and suggestions, I live in Canada,
importing from the USA, is prohibitive, to expensive....
My living room will be about 15' by 15',
The reason for a small or "weak" sub, is because, i wont be able
to make much use of it, without causing to much noise for the
apartment next to mine, and/or the landlord downstairs...
Has for my budget, i could go perhaps to about $750.00 US
or roughly $900.00 CND
And remember, many brands aren't available in canuck land !!!
rick240 01-15-09, 07:49 PM Whereabouts in Canada, east or west?
Have you looked at the DefTech ProCinema series? Probably only 600 would be in budget, maybe the 800.
The KEFs will be liquidated in Canada too. Just might have to push a dealer to get a good price.
Have you browsed Canuck Audio Mart for used deals?

there is a such thing as a volume knob' you know that knob on the back of the sub that has a max and min with a bunch of notches?
I agree with rick, you will not be disappointed.
