View Full Version : Um..... Can you say TRIPLE STACK??????
overclkr 01-14-09, 10:56 PM Guess what Ken and I are doing this weekend? :D
I've got a little loaner upstairs that is begging to be introduced into my theater. ;)
Ahhhhh yes, digital brightness (actually beginning to enproach 3 chip DLP!) with ultra uber on/off contrast that can only be dreamed about in front projection.
I see yummy pictures of test patterns and various screenshots of some of my favorite material in the near future. ;)

NASHOU!!!!!!!!!!!!
:D;):D;)
It's actually gonna be very simple my good friend. I plan on taking the back row seats out of my theater and using 2X4's for a makeshift spot under the hushbox for the loaner. Everything is pretty much tweaked out for the stack, just have to work some scheimenflugy on one of the green tubes, but other than that, ready to go after D65 touchup.
15 foot lamberts. 10 foot wide unity gain. Oh, and yes, you can stack 3 G90's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!;);)
Cliffy
nashou66 01-14-09, 11:38 PM Nice!!! I think when i get the rough blend set up on the floor and before i take down the marquee 8500 from the ceiling i will try the same thing !
But I have to wait for my bellow endeavor to happen and then convert my one 8500 to a 9500LC.
cant wait to see what the 3G90 stack looks like !

Hi Cliff,
Three is gonna be very special.
"Crispy Big" a guy in the UK spaked four NEC units.
Here is a thread for fun that shows........
Well, its a bit of fun so see for yourself.
(Also some posts in there from my old friend Mr King (RIP))
Cliff, you got a spare output for the NEC switcher? If not then now might be the time to try HDMI.......
Only wish I could see this,
Greg has my 909 boards for a up to date HDMI mods, once back I will test how bright the blend really is.
Take care,
Cliff is there room for you to go rear projection ???
That would then be silent in the cinema, apart from that awesome sound system.
Andy.

How's it going Andy? :)
Where is the linky???? Yes, I've got 3 output cards in the NEC so I can just reroute from my equipment room monitor to the G90. I don't have an HDMI input card for the G90 though. Just the moome HDMI card in the switcher.
I don't have any room for rear projection either unfortunately cause that would be a great idea. :)
I'm going to start working on it tomorrow so I'll update soon. ;)
Hope all is well with you. Oh, and I got the PM about your tubes too.

Dude, this triple stack is going to be sweet. I'm almost 100% sure I'll bust the on/off contrast and light output for front projection in this forum in not only regards to CRT but digital as well.
It's going to be absolutely sick. It will be a little noisy, but SICK AS HELL.
Nothing on the digital side is going to be able to think about reaching this kind of picture quality.
It's amazing how many people were against stacking because of loss of resolution.
NOT TRUE!!!!
Not only that, but I'm going to prove it with THREE G90's. ;)
I'm still scratching my head as to why someone would blend and not stack, this is what I've come up with.
1)blend is supposed to be sharper?Cliffs screenshots definately do not lack sharpness.
2) 2.35 for blending uses full raster,blah....16*9 is good enough and you just need to mask down.
3)cost?I think even with the triple stack cliff is still ahead.
What am I missing here?
Is there something else to consider?I'm just trying to decide whether my next upgrade is a stack or blend.
Dave
Fellenz 01-17-09, 09:40 AM Blending usually is used when you have a larger screen as with blending you use closer to the full tube face and can get more light output from each projector. Blending also allows you to use most any CRT as the geometry is simpler, for stacking if you want the projectors side by side you are limited as few machines are capable of this.

Another thing people forget is you get thew PJ a lot closer to the Screen in a blend, this helps improve light output off the screen. But Like you said, not many CRT PJ can do a side by side stack, the G90,909, and Marquee Ultras.

Just when I thought you reached the pinnacle of HT, you go ahead and rip open the envelope and drop a bomb in the mailman's bag, perfection delivered!!!
Kipp, I would be more than honored with your presence.
It's been way to long my friend. ;)
Kipp, is that a Sig Sauer in your avatar?
Kipp Jones 01-24-09, 12:50 PM Rob,
It is a Robinson Arms XCR in 7.62x39, see the cover below:

overclkr 01-25-09, 03:54 AM Guys, I screwed up the numbers for the on/off measurement so I'm reposting below.
stefuel 01-25-09, 07:20 AM As long as all the projctors are in good shape and you have ample room, with a dual view screen, you could even do 8 stacked projectors. Four in the front and four in the rear. The questions are why and when is enough enough?
RobertR 01-25-09, 10:52 AM Something new to dream about and aspire to. Great stuff, Cliffy.
overclkr 01-25-09, 03:59 PM Ok, here are the on/off measurements taken for the triple stack:
Projector one:
0IRE
R .001 FL
G .005 FL
B .001 FL
100IRE
R 4671 FL
G 20040 FL
B 1425 FL
Projector two:

R 4026 FL
G 17560 FL
B 1331 FL
Projector two:
R .011 FL
G .017 FL
B .001 FL

R 4160 FL
G 17700 FL

High Numbers added up:
72,251 Foot Lamberts
Low Numbers added up:

Divide 72,251 by .134
On/Off CONTRAST of a Triple Stack:

Light output:
14.8 foot lamberts.
darinp2 01-25-09, 09:44 PM Ok, here are the on/off measurements taken for the triple stack:
...
On/Off CONTRAST of a Triple Stack:
539,186 to one!If you put up a video black pattern (like from a test disc or a movie with a blackout), can you see that the screen is more reddish? My experience is that our eyes aren't as sensitive to red down low, so it wouldn't surprise me if you don't really see the red push there. Pretty nice either way, but your on/off CR for just green looks like it is around 2 million to 1, and your on/off CR for just blue look like it is around a million to 1 (although there is a fairly big margin of error). With your on/off CR for red around 120k:1 you could increase your on/off CR for white by taking care of the red at video black for the 2nd projector, but if you can't see it then I wouldn't worry about it much.

Darin, you don't see it, at least I don't. This weekend was amazing. I've never seen anything perform like this before in front projection. It was absolutely sick. I mean SICK!!!!! :D
Of course, BIG thanks go to Ken for making some changes and helping me get the system just right with his Mad Skillz. ;)
I wish the hard core guys like you could have seen this.

Are you considering going with the triple stack long term?
Maybe you could drown out some of the noise from the projectors by putting a PS3 in there. :)

Thanks for letting me come down, as always had a great time. Nice conversation, great video, just good times.
You know after spending so much time in homes theaters, iMax just doesn't do it for me. The weave in the screen really drove me nuts. But if your going to pay to see a movie, iMax is the way to go. Thanks Ken I had a great time watching The Day the Earth Stold Still with you.
This worked to stop Gort's attack, maybe it will stop Cliff's ever growing G90 stack, Cough... "Klaatu barada nikto"... Anything? No?, Dam... Oh well I tried, play on player...

I had a blast Don. Sorry I didn't make it for IMAX, but I was pretty whooped by then as I'm sure you could tell. ;) It was time for nighty night. :D

I'm actually shocked at the on/off numbers Big Dog. If I had a projection booth in the back of the room for them I would do it in a heart beat. It's a LITTLE softer when you add the third, but OMG, amazing.
Hopefully you'll see it one day. :)
Cliffy
overclkr 01-26-09, 09:32 PM Looks good Cliffy!
I can't wait until the weekend so we can dial in the gray scale and measure the output.
BTW, did I tell you I'm going to tweak Wallace's NEC in February? I'll be in BBQ heaven!!!

You know it's funny cause even though I thought it was loud, Don said it was manageable. The only downfall was having the third right behind my head. If I could put them in a projection booth, hell yes, I'd do it.
Designed properly I think it would be perfectly stable. ;)
Unfortunately with the economy in the pooper, I ain't gonna be making no changes anytime soon. :(
I will however, leave that bad boy in the back of the room for the next few weeks. :D

superleo 01-27-09, 10:16 AM this is absolutely AMAZING ... this sets the standard for FPs, either CRT or digital...

Art,
If I had the room, yes I would, but it's right smack dab in the spot where the family likes to sit so today it's coming down. :(
That's ok though, I'm perfectly happy with 9.8 foot lamberts and still what I consider insane on off. ;)
Hope the weekend is going well.

Now Cliff, sorry to hear the triple threat is coming down, down, down..........
Don_Kellogg 02-03-09, 01:06 AM So now that my eyes had a chance to heal, you see they were scorched by massive amounts of light, I forgot to calibrate them, I was under the impression that CRTs were some what dim compared to digital light cannons. Should have known better, I should have planned ahead and calibrated them to digital levels.
Anyway a few words / phrases come to mind when thinking about the triple stack.

When they come to do the DVD shoot, Ken, and you should stop by. We could get smoking jackets, and maybe some cavasia or how ever it's spelled.
