View Full Version : Sony STR-DG720 - No Sound From TV?
Hey guys. I just got my new STR-DG720 set up and loving it with my PS3. The problem is, when I try to get it to push the sound from the TV through the speakers, it doesn't work -- it just uses the TV speakers instead.
I tried switching to TV + Amp, have the input on TV, and still nothing. I have the HDMI cable connected properly, since I get video through the PS3. Any help would be most appreciated!
duvetyne 01-15-09, 02:23 PM How is the TV audio output connected to the amp?
If you meant the receiver, it is connected by HDMI to the HDMI Out slot, as it says in the manual.
duvetyne 01-15-09, 02:52 PM So, you don't have an audio connection from the TV to the receiver? You need to connect one.
BIslander 01-15-09, 03:46 PM What do you mean when you say you are trying to push the sound from the TV to your speakers? What is the source of the audio you are trying to hear - is it the PS3 audio or something else?
So the HDTV doesn't output audio over HDMI? I just want to know, since I didn't connect an optical cable. I don't really have one. lol
The source of the audio is the TV itself. I'm trying to watch cable with my speakers. Maybe I am too used to have sound through my PS3 to tell.
duvetyne 01-15-09, 03:48 PM I think he wants to be able to hear his tv through the amp, but doesn't have an output connected, he might be thinking the tv will "push" audio back out the HDMI input and into the HDMI output on the amp...I could be worng though.

The source of the audio is the TV itself. I'm trying to watch cable with my speakers. Maybe I am too used to have sound through my PS3 to tell.If you have a cable set top box, you need to run an optical audio cable from it to an input on your receiver. Or, if you you have a direct cable input to your TV without a set top box, you need to run an optical cable from the TV's digital output to an input on your receiver. Then, switch your receiver to that input.
The HDMI cable is an output from the receiver to the TV. Video and audio only go out. You can get inexpensive optical cables at monoprice.com.
I have the same receiver, and I am taking HDMI from my cable box to my receiver's HDMI-in, and using HDMI-out from the receiver to my TV's HDMI-in, and I am able to get sound from my TV speakers if I turn on the 720's AMP+TV.
I was trying this method in order to have the choice of cable sound from my either my receiver or from my TV (the solution involves muting one or the other). This way I could use the receiver to do the switching of either blu-ray or cable.
For unknown reasons, the sound quality from the TV is then bad (very echo-y), but I do get it (of course I am muting the receiver's output to the speakers). So I have taken down this wiring solution and am working on my next iteration.
Fatkinson 01-15-09, 08:14 PM Diddo XBR11. Setting on 720. the 720 will pass audio to Tv after setting change. Also you can adjust audio delay issues in the settings.
I don't have a cable box in my room, because it is in the bedroom. Am I still able to use the HDMI Out to the TV to get sound to come from my speakers? I try to set it as TV+AMP, but nothing happened. If you can give me sort of a step-by-step guide, I would really appreciate it. Thanks for the help, everyone!
BIslander 01-16-09, 12:25 AM I don't have a cable box in my room, because it is in the bedroom. How are you getting TV reception? A direct cable feed without a set top box? An off air antenna? If you are using an antenna, is it analog or digital?
So if I understand you correctly, it sounds like you have ONE hdmi cable going from PS3 to the TV....or do you have one from the PS3 to the receiver and then another one going from the receiver to the TV? Did you lose the manual for the receiver?

No, not if the TV (broadcast or cable) is the source. Your HDMI is only going to be audio/video for your PS3, from what you've described. Your TV should have some kind of audio output, either optical, coaxial, or just L/R stereo RCA. You need to hook one of those to the receiver then set the receiver to that input.
This is pretty bad. I bought the digital optical cable, but stupid me, I can not find any sort of input on the HDTV I own. Is there any way to fix this? Is it really possible not to have both video and audio over HDMI to my receiver so I can watch TV with my home theater set, or do I now need to spend even more money for a converter? :-(

If your TV has an HDMI output....which I've never seen on a TV, the you could do what you want to do. However, as mentioned in this thread, you have to connect the audio output of your TV's tuner to your amp in order to be able to hear the TV sound through your amp.
If there are no audio outputs on your TV (no optical, coax or analog) the you're out of luck. If there is an audio output, then you need to connect it to your amp.

No one can give you the help you are requesting without that information.
I am sorry. I have a coax cable running from the wall. There is no set-top box or anything in the room itself -- that would be in the living room. That is how I am getting TV reception.

You will need to run an optical cable from the digital output of your TV to an optical input on your receiver. You said your TV doesn't have an optical input, which is likely the case. But, that's fine, because you aren't feeding audio into the TV. You are feeding it out. Most (all?) HD sets have optical OUTPUTs, which is what you will be using.
The TV will feed out whatever audio it is receiving on the channel you are watching. If the channel has DD 5.1, that's what you'll get. If the channel only has stereo, you'll get that instead. Check your TV manual to see if there's a setting needed to activate digital audio output.
On your receiver, switch to the input you used for the optical cable from the TV. That's where you'll find the sound. You'll probably need to mute the TV as well.
The HDMI cable and the PS3 have nothing to do with any of this. The cable feed from the wall goes in to your TV's QAM tuner. The tuner produces video for the display and audio that gets sent to your TV speakers and to the optical output.
It looks like my HDTV doesn't have an optical output. I couldn't even find it mentioned in the manual. It just says to use red and white audio cables. Maybe I should go ahead and try to find a better TV since my friend wants to buy mine. :(

I'd try hooking up the red/white cables and to see how it sounds. You can apply a digital signal processing (DSP) mode such as ProLogic II in your receiver to create pretty realistic surround sound from stereo sources. Aside from a few prime time shows that are well mixed for 5.1, most TV shows with 5.1 don't make very good use of the surround channels anyway.
But, sure, if you can get a new set by selling your current one, go for it. If it doesn't have an optical output, it's probably missing some other useful features that would affect picture quality as well.
It's an Olevia 232-T11. I would really appreciate the help! =)
BIslander 01-25-09, 11:46 AM It's an Olevia 232-T11. I would really appreciate the help! =)Olevia hasn't posted that particular manual. So, I really can't be of any further help.
I suggest you plug in the stereo cables and turn off the speakers in the TV (all Olevia manuals seem to have that instruction). That should work. You'll be limited to stereo. But, you can probably apply a DSP such as Dolby ProLogic II to produce 5.1 in your receiver.
Alright, this took a long time, but I finally bought the red and white audio cables to output sound from the TV to my speakers. Problem is, it doesn't seem to work. I think I connected it to the right way. On the left side of the TV at the top, it says "Audio Output", and I connected the cables there to the back of my receiver on the bottom left where it shows TV In. I turned off the speakers on my Olevia TV, but no sound from the speakers. I changed the channels, but no go. Anyone know what is up? Thanks!
Anybody? Anyone? I would really appreciate the help.

Are you then changing the receiver to TV? The receiver has to be on that input. I also suggest you read and then re-read your manuals for TV and receiver.
dinoman22 03-18-09, 06:57 PM Greetings, I am concerned as I am getting this receiver as well.
The Sony SRT 720 should be here 3/23.
I ditched cable for Over the Air HDTV, analog Antenna (10 bucks at best buy ) - if its really windy or raining out the picture tiles/pixelates.
Yeah i gotta sometime mess with rabbit ears, but it save me 80 bucks a month. I use Tversity and my PS3 for watching tv, movies and what not.
I have an Olevia 32 HDTV, no optical. Same red/white audio output , which is Stereo located on the back of tv. I would assume as well to plug (red&white cables) into the HDTV and then run them to the receiver in the input labeled "TV IN" and set the receiver to TV,so sound would come through my home theater speakers .
I would be lost if this doesn't work...
dinoman22 03-20-09, 11:30 PM Ok, my receiver came early w00t, and yes for my situation i described above, this method works!!!
Be sure NOT to turn off your TV sound, but to turn the volume all the way down on the TV set....
Be sure to run Red&white audio cables to the tv and the reciever.
Be sure the Sony STR is set to TV,
The volume i had set was at 30 , I have polk m20 floor standing speakers.
Good luck!
Okay, I have the cable plugged from the HDTV's Audio Output (next to the earphone jack) to the back of the receiver on the bottom left (if facing the back) in the TV IN spots. I turned the sound on my TV all the way down and changed the receiver to TV. But, nothing happens! I don't get sound at all!
Is there some setting on the receiver that I have to change to output for the TV? Thanks a lot!
I have the 820 but not sure if you checked it already but did you go inside the amp menu and change it to amp+tv and not just have it on amp only??
Hey Naruto did that fix your problem??
I got it to work but the sound only comes from the center speaker through the TV. It turns out before that I had my computer on while plugged to the TV and to my receiver through the digital optical cable. Simple mistake, but a dumb one. lol!
Anyway, if you wouldn't mind helping me solve this hiccup as well, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!
I may be going over stuff you already did but a quick run down. Inside the amp set it to AMP+TV. Then run the hdmi cables or whatever you choose fromevery component to the receiver. And the only cables that hook into the TV should be an HDMI out for your video and then an optical or digital audio out to the rear of the tv. The STR-DG720 doesnt put out sound via hmdi cable so you have to run a seperate audio cable. Now if you want a component that you can only hook into the TV to have sound through the surrounds you need to run a sperate cable from the digital audio out on the tv to an audio in on the receiver.
Yeah, the Olevia 32" I have doesn't have a digital optical in port (as I mentioned before), so I am going just over what I have learned thus far. Like I said, it works, and I get sound, but only through the center speaker. Any way to make it spread out to the other speakers? Thanks!
