WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Since the AFL-NFL merger, this NFC Championship game features the lowest combined regular-season winning percentage of any two teams meeting in a title game. The Cardinals are the lowest seed (4) ever to host the championship game and it is a franchise that has gone 60 years without a championship.
There is no question that the Cardinals (7-2 at home this season) have an advantage with crowd noise and the fact their defense plays quicker and faster in the ideal conditions at home. Arizona has been opportunistic in the playoffs with nine take-aways; look for the Cards to attack the edges, especially RT Jon Runyan, who is slowed by a right knee sprain.
The Cardinals have had great play from their front seven in their two improbable playoff wins and this game could be decided by which offensive line wins the battle. Arizona's O-line has been surprisingly dominant in the playoffs. LT Wayne Gandy has shut down pass rushers John Abraham and Julius Peppers on successive weeks. However, he won't be the issue in this game. The entire line, plus RB Edgerrin James, must pick up the assorted Philadelphia blitzers and keep Kurt Warner from being sacked or worse, fumbling. The Eagles love to flood the gaps with their big linebackers and then shoot someone off the edge. They were the No. 2 blitzing team in the league this season.
Everyone talks about James being an effective runner at the end of the season, thus balancing the attack, but the Cardinals really put him back in the lineup because he's a better pass blocker than Tim Hightower. Arizona expects WR Anquan Boldin (hamstring) to play, but even he doesn't know how long he will hold up. If Boldin plays, it gives Warner another target — one who is very adept at running after the catch.
Larry Fitzgerald, who isn't a noted route runner, has played the best two games of his career in the playoffs, totaling 14 catches for 267 yards and two TDs. Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston are noted "bad ball" receivers, which should help Warner.
The Eagles will continue to allow cornerbacks Asante Samuel and Sheldon Brown to play man coverage on the outside, meaning that both could get stuck in a trailing position whenever Fitzgerald and Boldin run crossing routes, a Cardinal favorite and one that worked perfectly against Carolina's zone last weekend.
The Eagles haven't been running well, just 2.5 yards a carry in the playoffs, and RB Brian Westbrook was slowed this week by swelling in his left knee. Philadelphia needs to keep showing the run in order to keep Arizona pass rushers off Donovan McNabb.
Philadelphia's wide receivers caught 197 passes in the regular season, the most in the Andy Reid era. They've caught another 25 in the two playoff wins, and there's no question that rookie DeSean Jackson must continue his big-play streak. Jackson, though, will be covered by another rookie, CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who did an excellent job on Carolina's Steve Smith last weekend. Rodgers-Cromartie has two INTs in the playoffs and six in his last nine games. His play has allowed Antrel Rolle to stay at free safety.

No suprise there. This could be one explosive game for the Cards if Warner's jersey isn't getting dirty.

I am picking this up on FOX Channel 5 New York OTA.
There is no way this is 720p.
Looks like Faux-widescreen 480p at best.
Somebody's lying, or compressing the 720p as to be nearly-unwatchable.

paule123 01-18-09, 02:37 PM Terry Bradshaw just tried to explain the digital transition with a set of rabbit ears and a DTV converter box. That was painful to watch. :D
That pretty much describes the Fox pre-game show. The first couple of seasons that Fox had NFL back I used to think it was entertaining, but now I can't remember why.

What a disgrace.
NFL On FOX in studio is always 480i > 720p upconverted.
paule123 01-18-09, 02:52 PM I switched to CBS when JB left.
I switched to CBS as well when JB left. That and the fact that CBS has a much more watchable pregame show in super sharp 1080i.
They're now on with Troy and Joe and the pic looks good; Comcast Willow Grove.

Typical FOX NFL in HD, good video, great audio.

This is the case for me on every FOX game that I watch all season long Chicago WFLD via antenna and via Directv. Saints games are of extremely poor quality and I suspect that the center camera is 480p at best.
BarryB1124 01-18-09, 04:01 PM WNYW-5 OTA in NYC. Looks much better than most FOX games. I just had my TV (Sony KDS-55A3000) calibrated so perhaps that helped somewhat...but even so, it does look much better than usual for whatever the reason. Less video noise that I have seen on most other FOX games.

You're wrong. All cameras are 720p.
I wouldn't be surprised if the cameras were 1080p, its the compression. It looks terrible, like 480p. Last year's Super Bowl looked a lot better, and it was the same stadium. Was last weekend's Cardinals/Panthers game stunning 720p quality as well?

The cameras are running at 720p. Not only is it the same stadium but also the same prodution truck as the SUper Bowl last year, just on a smaller scale.
I missed most of Fox half time. Where was the Blond Bomber?

McNabb is playing horribly.
3rd TD that Arizona just scored, may have put this away.

All cameras are in 720p. Same Truck, Same Cameras, Same Video Operators, same backhaul parameters as last years superbowl. Different time of day in the stadium, although the roof was closed then.

doesn't look like we are going to have an all east coast superbowl as the eagles are getting killed. so it looks like its going to be a ravens arizona superbowl.
Why didn't they go for Two? Makes no sense, 4 pts or 5pts, you still will have to score a touchdown.
Anyway looks pretty good, not too bad at all, not as good as their BCS games but no complaints here. Audio is really good.

Hello......
What specifically is it that you are not happy with? Soft, macro blocking, pixilating, what?
not pixellated, but thats the only thing it has going for it. all cameras, including the main centre field one, are very soft and dull. no crispness, no sparkle, no shine. bland colours, very lifeless. this, and every other fox game this season, has looked like someone has wrapped my plasma in saran wrap, which im trying to watch the game though. this is in direct contrast to countless times this year when i would have a cbs game on another channel and the difference is startling..
It is sad that they won't open the dome.

Should have been a call, but Curtis should have also caught it. Nobody wants to see the drive continue on a flag on a play like that.
Johnny5.1 01-18-09, 06:17 PM Nice "F" bomb dropped by Edgerrin James on the sideline
E-A-G-L-E-S 01-18-09, 06:17 PM Why, an obvious penalty is a penalty just the same.
Either way their worst first half of the season did the Eagles in.
Woodrow 01-18-09, 06:22 PM You can't make that call at that point in the game, imo. I think not calling interference was the right call.
It's neat seeing these Cards fans celebrate. They're excited like I haven't seen fans excited in a while.
E-A-G-L-E-S 01-18-09, 06:24 PM You have to make that call anytime you see it by the rules.
I don't want to hear that stuff.
Eagles lost, and that in and of itself did not decide the game....still has to be called.
Damn McNabb and 'D' in first half.
Woodrow 01-18-09, 06:25 PM And fwiw, I do feel bad for Eagles fans, I'm happy with the result but I still feel a little bad.
It had to be this way though.
Eh, it evens out because of that Ed Hocuili call in the 2nd quarter. Shoulda been Cardinals ball, but they ruled it dead because they thought it bounced out of bounds.

Eagles lost, and that in and of itself did not decide the game....still has to be called.I agree it was close enough that if it were called it would have been legit, but on 4th down, down by 7, you can't give a team that kind of bailout on that kind of interference, imo.

Deservedly so....1-4 and in NFC Champ Games and no SB with a 10 year tenure.

Very good PQ on WNYW via Cablevision.

Very good PQ and AQ. The only complaint I would have is that it sounded as if they had the left surround channel miked on one person who clapped constantly. That is all I could her from my left rear. Very annoying.
Clap Clap Clap Clap
romanesq 01-18-09, 06:49 PM the ball hit the ground and went away from the player.
You don't need my 106" screen to figure that one out.:D
What? Watch it from any angle and you will see that it hits his leg while his foot was out of bounds. It was the right call.
Any angle? What, you mean the TWO angles that we have available, and in one of them a player is in the way? Its not like we had 360 degree cameras. I'll agree to disagree, but my point is based on the fact that the ball's trajectory is never altered in any way, which you would expect it to be if it even grazed the hair on his arm. It has the exact same bounce that it would have had if Victor had been watching it on TV from Philly. Never touched him.
CPanther95 01-18-09, 06:54 PM They're excited like I haven't seen fans excited in a while.
That's the kind of excitement that translates to a whole off season securing season tickets, then the second half of next season trying to unload them.
Run4two 01-18-09, 06:57 PM I don't think it touched him from what I saw, but I didn't see conclusive evidence in order to overturn the call on the field. Oh, that's right, you can't review it. It was "Hochulid"! Game looked average on Fox 11 in L.A. on TWC.
Woodrow 01-18-09, 07:12 PM That's the kind of excitement that translates to a whole off season securing season tickets, then the second half of next season trying to unload them.I'm not completely convinced that the Cards are not for real though.
They showed a LOT on that last drive. First NFC championship game and they mount a seven minute drive to end the game. That's pretty ballsy and with most players returning, and Fitz and Warner on offense, these guys could be for real.

Maybe in your opinion, but I certainly don't share it. :)
He should have thrown for many more...they passed ~70% of the time and missed many big play opportunites.(can count four plays that with a 'decent' throw would have been big touchdowns)
Not all him, but big part.
Defense played aweful and the Eagles were outcoached.
I'm calling it right now: Houston Texans vs Detroit Lions in Super Bowl XLIV!
URFloorMatt 01-18-09, 07:33 PM I'm not doubting the team, I'm doubting their new-found fans.
What newfound fans? Is Cardinals mania sweeping the country?
If so, NBC will be very glad to hear it.
Woodrow 01-18-09, 07:35 PM Maybe in your opinion, but I certainly don't share it. :)You better get to the Eagles board and start riding McNabb because I just talked to my eagles fan brother and he's not down on McNabb at all. I'm pretty surprised because he threw some bad balls in a couple critical situations. He's happy to have him back next year though.
I like Reid, but I've always thought McNabb has issues in big games. I'd like to see Reid get a shot to coach a QB besides McNabb. That way he can make honest QB decisions without the media jumping his ass. He got laid into for benching McNabb, and I think it was the right decision. They played a lot better after that game.
E-A-G-L-E-S 01-18-09, 07:38 PM Not my thing.
Plenty of zealouts to do that.
What I hate is McNabb's post game P.C. where he basically says offense did their job, defense lost it.
How about saying I came up small in a big game...again.
He never takes any responsibility or ever owns up....which is a reason why many philly fans are negative about him.
All that said it is still 50/50 on the fans for and against.
The fact is, Donovan should take no blame. He stepped up in the big spot, brought the team back, etc. He was doing fine in the first half, but the Eagles receivers weren't making catches.
Woodrow 01-18-09, 07:43 PM Not my thing.
He never takes any responsibility or ever owns up....which is a reason why many philly fans are negative about him.
Yup and that's what I hate about both him and Romo. It's always someone else's fault, or "just the way it goes". I hate that attitude. It's a losing attitude.
Like I said though, I like Reid a lot and I think he'd do well with a brand new start at QB.
E-A-G-L-E-S 01-18-09, 07:43 PM What game were you watching? lol
They scored with over 7 minutes left(not a big spot) and then did nothing when it came time for the real big spot.
The first half many of those drops were on balls thrown two feet above, behind or in the ground.
He almost never throws a leading pass that allows for a run after the catch, just like today.
i.e. interception to ronde barber in nfc champ game
i.e. interception against Carolina in nf champ game
i.e. interception and throwing up in super bowl.
When it come to real gut check time he comes up short.
McNabb would have looked a lot better, and so would the result for Eagles fans, had the receivers caught the balls that hit them in the hands.
Woodrow 01-18-09, 07:45 PM The fact is, Donovan should take no blame. He stepped up in the big spot, brought the team back, etc. He was doing fine in the first half, but the Eagles receivers weren't making catches. He threw BEHIND several receiver in critical spots. Yes, there were some drops too, but at some point McNabb has to be held ACCOUNTABLE and he NEVER is.
Especially according to the media, it's NEVER McNabb's fault. But you know, he's the only common denominator in all these losses. Well besides Reid, but I think Reid has been handcuffed having McNabb as his QB because of the way the media howls if you try and blame McNabb for anything.
CPanther95 01-18-09, 07:49 PM What newfound fans? Is Cardinals mania sweeping the country?

NBC won't be popping any champagne. Arizona filling their stadium with Cardinal fans means they've at least doubled their fan base.
URFloorMatt 01-18-09, 07:53 PM The Barrett-Jackson auto auction was next door in Scottsdale this week. Wikipedia says the 2006 auction brought in 225,000 spectators, so I'm betting the Cardinals have someone to thank for their quick sellout.
vurbano 01-18-09, 08:20 PM He threw BEHIND several receiver in critical spots. Yes, there were some drops too, but at some point McNabb has to be held ACCOUNTABLE and he NEVER is.

McNabb? I didnt see Mcnabb failing to Cover Fitzgerald in the 1st half and giving up 21 points. The eagles lost because they simply are not that good and are born chokers. They cannot , have not and never will win the big one. They will always choke.

44-6
NBC won't be popping any champagne. Arizona filling their stadium with Cardinal fans means they've at least doubled their fan base.
Aren't the Cards your favorite team now?
Woodrow 01-18-09, 08:27 PM The eagles lost because they simply are not that good with McNabb as their quarterback Fixed :)
McNabb always plays well enough so some fans(and all of the media) can defend him but he'll never play well enough to win anything. It's actually a very cruel joke.

You haven't been here too long.
Jeremy W 01-18-09, 08:30 PM Terrible call, hopefully nothing bad results.

I know you claim your an Eagles fan even though your screen name contradicts that. You have stated your second team is the Panthers, so why can't you be a Cards fan as well?
My point is what real NFL fan has more than ONE team!
Who can take you seriously?

Eh, I can see where he's coming from. He moved to Carolina and Carolina got an NFL team.
I used to be a Bucs fan, and then I moved to Indiana in 2002, the same year Tony Dungy moved to the Colts. That was great winning the Super Bowl in 2002, but after reading about the Colts every single day in the Indy Star (more like the Colts star) and seeing them every week as the local team, I started watching them. I was already out here in California when the Colts won their Super Bowl, but I've been primarily a Colts fan for a while.
CPanther95 01-18-09, 08:41 PM I have one team - the Steelers. Western PA bred.
Had season tickets for the Eagles for 10 years and the Panthers about 10 years, their first 10 (plus the Panthers signed my brother very briefly). So I have a soft spot for those two as long as it has no negative impact on the Steelers.

I was at the Steeler game in Philly with my Palomalu jersey on. There are no cracks in my allegiance. Sundays must be boring for you if you don't care about the outcome for 15 games. I can pick someone to root for in almost every game.
If I watch an Olympic event between Lichtenstein and Austria, I'll pick someone to root for.

What you say about NBC may be true, but the Cards have sold out every game since they moved to their new stadium. The bad Cards teams of the past were hard to watch, but sitting on a metal bench at 105 F in the first few home games is pretty difficult for anything except die hard fans. The new venue has shown there is a real loyal fan base here and the team has responded.

Not a Pennsylvanian, but I did do a year with a rock station in Pgh. Worked on Mount Worshington. Went dahntahn to watch the Stillers bunch.

:pWellllll... I married a Steeler's fan. LONG before I got to Detroit. But I did have Lions season tickets up until 2000 when I moved to Cincy. Spent the $$ on Sunday Ticket and never looked back. Timing was pretty good, too. Lions haven't done much since I released my tickets. And I had GREAT seats!!

1) marital harmony
2) No argument over $$ spent on HDTVs and NFL Sunday Ticket.
3) Her idea to build a sports bar in our basement. It's almost finished. Blog at my station's website.

paule123 01-19-09, 12:19 AM PQ was surprisingly good for Fox. On a par with last year's Fox SB, which I also complimented. Normally the Fox games look dismal, but perhaps it looked better because they weren't muxing 6 different games?
Watching WJW Cleveland (no subchannels) via D* on a 50" 1080p plasma.
All cameras are in 720p. Same Truck, Same Cameras, Same Video Operators, same backhaul parameters as last years superbowl. Different time of day in the stadium, although the roof was closed then. Thanks for chiming in Kevin, it's always good to hear from the on site source.

Super Bowl party?
I still can't shake the fact that FOX "STEALS" 10% of the image with their scoreboard, if they removed the solid 5% black bar from the top I'll be happy, or at least do it like baseball and make it 50% more transparent (90% would be ideal and the scorebar about 40%)....
vurbano 01-19-09, 10:23 AM Fixed :)

McNabb didnt give up 32 points in a playoff game. Geez even the Kicker choked! McNabb didnt fail to stop the Cards during their last drive. He put 25 points on the board which should be enough when you have the 3rd best defense in the league. That loss yeasterday was far more Andy Reed's fault than McNabb. Whatever adjustment they made defensively at the half should have been made a LOT sooner. You cannot win a championship giving up 32 points.
steverobertson 01-19-09, 10:34 AM I thought the PQ in Boston over D* was very disappointing. The funny thing is I had to replace a bulb in my DLP which made it look even worse.

vurbano 01-19-09, 11:01 AM 44-633-13 in your own house to a team that hadnt been in a championship in 61 years.
CPanther95 01-19-09, 12:12 PM Eagles beat us 15-6. That's a far cry from 44-6. Sadly that 44-6 game wasn't even as close as the score would indicate.
As far as the Cards go, they beat everybody necessary. That team that hasn't been to a championship is the best that the NFC had to offer this year. They beat 3 NFC playoff teams, and got to the playoffs by beating up on the non-playoff crappy teams in the NFC like the Cowboys. :D

It's hard to keep track of your teams, so when you say "us" whom are you talking about? Based on your post I can elimanate the Eagles and based on the score of 15-6 it's not the Panthers, so I guess it's the Steelers. I guess answered my own question.

Vurbano is talking to you about your team=Carolina, a few posts up.

I guess it's ok to have three or four favorite teams.

Trent Dilfer has one too....so it obviouisly doesn't mean anything in their two cases.
I hear alot of Giants fans killing Eli still saying he can't throw in the wind and he's a bum.....which you guys were also saying midpoint last year.
Anyone who knows anything knows the defense carried them last year.
Like the Eagles until yesterday.

They scored over 40 last time they played and the cards defense is not good.
25 is good against a good defense.
And once again he couldn't lead his team on a final drive. Has yet to in his career.
He is a good QB, but comes up small in the biggest times.

Super Bowl party?Only if you don't mind getting the bum's rush at halftime if it's a blowout. I still have to get up Monday morning at 3. Though with the Steelers in, I'll probably stay up 'till the bitter end.

Ask your brother since he got a quick lesson in pro football. I never made it that far but I work with 3 former NFL players (1 RB and 2 middle LB's) that are now Firefighters. Manuel White from the Redskins is the latest to join the family! The last time I looked there are 11 players on the team. It's always easy to blame the quarterback when you're the fan and your team loses. The passes I saw Mc Nabb throw in the first half were dropped it seems due to nerves and trying to look upfield before catching the ball! It's funny how everytime they (Eagles) lose in the playoffs it's Mc Nabb but when they win it's the team playing well. :D
If your receivers don't get yards after the reception you will lose no matter who is throwing the ball. They were simply outplayed! To win you must have the desire and will to win when you're fatigued and hurting all over from the hits of the last 3 quarters. The Cardinals wanted it more than the Eagles did in the final minutes of the game.

If you had read any of my posts throughout the past two seasons(since I became a member here) I have been a big supporter of DMac...hell I named my dog Donovan.
Also I am not solely blamimg Donovan for yesterday. It is obvious our receivers are just average.
It was obvious the great defense folded in the first half and was out-gameplanned.(almost never happens)
But many of those drops are on bad throws and that is par for the course for Donovan.
He clearly made four bad throws, any of which would have most likely resulted in a TD if thrown better.
Nice to see buckhalter get two touches for basically 20 yards and not see the field again, same with our percentage of pass to run from the gun.

Ha Ha. PSteeler95 was actually my very first AOL name because of Greg Lloyd. When we had issues with an account, we weren't able to keep it, and by that time hardly anything "Steeler" related was available without something that looked like a SSN at the end.
If it were for my brother, it would have been CPanther3.5 for the number of months he played. :D
Yes it's confusing, if the only thing you have to go by is the name - but since this was an A/V forum, I was more concerned with locale than NFL team affiliation.....and the avatar doesn't help. That's a photo that was presented by Charlotte to Jerry Richardson to commemorate their first game in Charlotte. It was also in the HoF and may, or may not, still be hanging at the NFL HQ in NY. I used that because it was easy identified with the screen name.
But bottom line is that I'm 43 years old from Western PA. The Panthers are about 13 years old. Anyone who thinks that you can be a Steelers fan for 30 years and then stop doesn't know Pittsburgh. They're probably one of those wine & cheese fans of another team - the kind at the stadium that ask you to please sit down and keep it down because they are trying to enjoy their football game viewing - the ones that then have to use their linen napkins to wipe up the beer that just got dumped on their head. ;)
Luckily this is not college football. It doesn't matter, if you beat somebody 44:6 or 33:13, as long you get into the playoffs.
Recent history has shown that lower ranked teams that get hot at the right time can make it far in the playoffs.
The Eagles definetly did the Cards a favour by removing the Giants. But even that's kind of a moot point now;)
Heard on ESPN's Around the Horn today: "If this were college football, the Cardinals would have just won a spot to play in the Outback Bowl"
CPanther95 01-19-09, 07:07 PM Ouch. And they'd probably be underdogs. ;)
BTW - Anyone else think Demps should have been ejected?

Well at least the Superbowl isn't on Fox..... LOL

cards keep surprising everyone as they have been underdogs in each of their playoff games. i don't think they're due to come back to earth as i
don't think they'll surprise the steelers. i figure troy will decapitate warner.
