I have been trying for days to correct the overscan on my tv in ubuntu. I am using an ASUS P5N7A-VM motherboard with and integrated 9300 nvidia card. The board is hooked up through my HDMI cable to my tv. My tv is a Sony KDF-55X955 which accepts up to 1080i resolution. I have tried many changed to the xorg.conf file and nothing seems to work. I have updated to the lasted nvidia drivers using Envy - which i believe is v177.

however, no matter how i put it in the xorg.conf file, i can never get the screen right. It seems to not find this configuation anywhere.

According to the reviews and specs I've found, the KDF-55XS955 TV circa 2004 doesn't have 1080 native resolution, but only 720. Set your display for 1280x720 and see what you get. It will accept up to a 1080i video source, but it still can't display anything above it's native resolution. IOW's the 1080i input will be downconverted by the TV to 720p. Start with that and it should work right.

I don't remember exactly, but I'm sure it started with a google search for
KDF-55X955. I then discovered that you left the S out and searched for KDF-55XS955. I saw 2 reviews that list pixel count at about 1M, which is less than that required for 1920x1080 resolution. But I'm not familiar with projection TV, so I could be wrong if it a tube type projector. Have you tried running nvidia-settings to see if you can correct the display?

accepting 1080i as an input and displaying it are two very different things. The native resolution of your set is 1386x768 -- all signals input, whether 480i/p, 720p. or 1080i -- are being converted to "768p." You should set your PC to output 1386x768 for optimal results, so that the PC/video card is handling the scaling, and not your TV

1386x788 sure is a weird res. I've never seen before. I'm wondering if that's not supposed to be 1366x768, which is pretty much the standard for most LCD TV's. If so he should probably use 1360x768. Although I've also used 1280x720 and then let the Tv do the conversion.

Moral of the story- avoid Sony displays at any cost! ;)

But seriously (actually, I'm serious), there is no excuse for a VGA or HDMI/DVI equipped display made in the past 5 years or so to not 1:1 pixel map its native resolution (or close to it in the case of 1360x768 1:1 mapped on a 1366/8x768 display).

There should be a "1:1", "Native" or other option in the display's set up menus to disable all scaling (display scaling is the cause of over/underscan issues)

If not, consider selling the display if you plan to use a computer with it.
