View Full Version : Hidden Sub?

I am probably going to flank either side of a fireplace with a 2 door kitchen type cabinet and Barrister type bookshelves over each one. If I use an RF remote all will be hidden up front except the subwoofer. My question is, can I put the sub in the cabinet with solid doors and compensate with some added volume or is it not possible due to acoustics or vibrations?

If this is the wrong place to discuss this I am sorry.

Hi Tom,
i have done a couple of installs like this,i used down firing subs, removed the base panel from the cabinet so the sub stands on the floor & vents its output through the plinth which i cut then fitted a grille, tidy :)

If you are up for a little work you can totally hide a sub and get great results. It is called an Infinite baffle sub.

Here is some info.

Ya, no matter what you need somewhere for the air/sound to radiate from, some form of opening. Can you replace the front panel with grille fabric or slatted panel?

I did something like this myself. Removed the raised panel from the bottom door and replaced it with grille clothe, also removed the top raised panel and replaced it with glass for the equipment. If you don't have the subs already, you could build the subs inside the cabinetry and save even more $$$

I was hoping to keep the solid doors but it is all still a concept now so no money spent no money lost. The sub is not down firing but that could be remedied with some rubber feet probably.

I like jason shep's idea due to esthetics and the cabinets could be engineered to do this as a friend will be building them.

I appreciate the ideas, you have given me plenty of options.

Test it though afterwards with frequency sweep from the lowest to its cut-off range or just above and listen for buzzes and rattles otherwise it will be pain in the neck to sort out later secure it down tight as drum.
