View Full Version : My CES review Curt Palme 01-19-09, 04:12 PM Probably not a lot of stuff that folks here are interested in, but here's my spin on it: http://www.curtpalme.com/CES2009_page1.shtm oneobgyn 01-19-09, 04:44 PM Nicely done Curt although some photos from AVN would have been appreciated ;) Steve Bruzonsky 01-19-09, 04:45 PM Probably not a lot of stuff that folks here are interested in, but here's my spin on it: http://www.curtpalme.com/CES2009_page1.shtm Curt, we know :rolleyes:you really went to Vegas to attend the Adult Movie Awards. http://www.avnawards.com/ Don't you have some photos up on the web for us to click on???? AV Doogie 01-19-09, 06:08 PM Thanks for the pretty pics.... was that a 16000 watt music system I saw? Curt Palme 01-19-09, 06:19 PM At $90 to get into the avn awards, no thanks! Fake boobed (amongst other things), massive makeup chicks have never done it for me. Now, I was a big porn star back before the internet came to be, so unfortunately there's no video clips of me and Nina Hartley online. There is on a camcorder tape somewhere here from 1994 though that has Nina and I in a compromising position....;) Steve Bruzonsky 01-19-09, 08:02 PM At $90 to get into the avn awards, no thanks! Curt, its ok, we are equal opportunity here at AVS and won't hold your sexual preference against you.:D More seriously, you did a nice CES writeup. SJHT 01-19-09, 08:04 PM Thanks for posting. Great pixs. SJ Curt Palme 01-19-09, 10:36 PM Curt, its ok, we are equal opportunity here at AVS and won't hold your sexual preference against you.:D More seriously, you did a nice CES writeup. Nice burn, didn't see that coming. (now get off the rug so you don't burn some more. ):rolleyes::p:D Mark Petersen 01-19-09, 11:09 PM Curt, did you get a chance to check out the 31" Samsung OLED panel? OLED is supposed to be the next big thing and the initial reports on the Samsung have been really impressive, but I'm curious to hear what a true videophile thinks. Don't let the size fool you though, the cost will be coming down and the size will be going up and if the PQ is truly as unreal as people say it is.... :) Curt Palme 01-20-09, 09:57 AM I did see it, but the booth was busy, so I didn't get a lot of time to critically view it. I've said since I've seen OLED 2 years ago... it looks good. THing is, the higher contrast ratio panels of plasma and LCD look decent too. Finally there's something that resembles 'fade to black' rather than 'fade to green or gray'. Also impressive were the much higher refresh rate screens. 120 and 240Hz were displayed. No motion artifacts on those. I'll wait until they hit the stores locally to make a final decision on them. that way I can take my time to look at them. As I said in the report, laser projectors were the buzzword around here a couple of years ago, and according to Epson, the technology is dead in the water.... for now. wolfyncsu7 01-20-09, 10:31 AM I skimmed through your pictures and comments... I didn't see anything regarding 3D. Did you check out any of the 3D demos there? donaldk 01-20-09, 12:43 PM I did see it, but the booth was busy, so I didn't get a lot of time to critically view it. Same for OLED, note the 31" size, 40" was promised last year. How come it wasn't there, well Samsung has halted its development and announced production schedule, focussing its efforts on LCD/Plasma instead. http://displaydaily.com/2008/12/09/no-oled-tvs-from-samsung-for-now-or-forever/ The same has happened to GLV, and SED/FED, in recent years. LG announced an 480Hz LCD, upping the ante in big numbers marketing. donaldk 01-20-09, 12:58 PM Curt, the pico projector is a very interesting segment, and 10 Lumens is only the rating of the first generation currently marketed, 25 lumens and more has been demonstrated, so we should start to see those in the next round. One step up, the pocketprojectors are in the 100-200 lumens range and offer a nice premium product to the roadwarriar segment. And there are special pull-out black screen available. Of course Optoma should be able to get that 800 lumens beast out, as it the same Delta machine that Vivitek was showing at CES. Optoma and Vivitek were announced as the launch customers for the Delta developed DLP LED platform, during IFA. Curt Palme 01-20-09, 06:41 PM None of this changes the fact that 25% of WalMart customers are still running an HD signal via an Svideo cable..;) I agree, obviously as technology goes forward, things do improve, that goes for anything shown at CES. However... as stated above, some stuff also quietly goes away..:) sikoniko 01-22-09, 08:36 AM I skimmed through your pictures and comments... I didn't see anything regarding 3D. Did you check out any of the 3D demos there? 3D was everywhere at CES. Its kinda gimmicky to me. Its cool I guess, but I don't want to wear the glasses for everything I watch. Curt Palme 01-22-09, 10:52 AM Unfortunately I have a lazy eye, so none of the 3D stuff has worked on me. The exception was the 3D theater at Disneyland a few years ago, that worked maybe twice throughout the show. Besides, I see enough 3D displays of misconverged projectors that I tweak..;) |
