View Full Version : Pioneer PRO-151FD -- where are 59.94Hz and 23.976Hz?

I'm involved in the development of a modest HTPC platform for Linux called Freevo. I'm currently working on retrace-precise frame delivery, and I own a 151FD.

Almost all of my content is either at 29.97 or 23.976 fps, which is certainly typical for a North American. Now that I'm paying close attention to exactly when frames are being displayed during playback, I discovered something startling: a skipped retrace every 33.33 seconds for 29.97 material, or 41.67 seconds for 23.976 material.

Surprised at the obvious implication, I checked, and sure enough, my display is at 60Hz exactly, not 59.94Hz. It seemed no matter what modelines I threw out, I could not get the tv syncing at 59.94Hz or 23.976Hz.

I looked at the manual, and section 5.2 (page 84) indeed shows 24 and 60Hz for 1920x1080p. The fact it mentions 59.94Hz for the 1080i mode leads me to believe this is not an oversight or simple rounding up.

Is it really the case that playing film content on my $7k high end television must duplicate a frame every 41 seconds in order to maintain A/V sync? Or do common settop players recognize this and account for it by speeding up the video and resampling the audio up 0.1%?

Or (I'm hoping!) is all this just paranoia? Have others been able to sync the Kuro at 59.94 and 23.976Hz? Could you provide the modelines you used?

Thanks!
Jason.
