View Full Version : 4000ft^3...what to do?
dookie1 01-19-09, 10:56 PM 31x16x8 rectangle. heavily padded carpet over concrete slab floor, insulated drywall/wood stud walls & ceiling.
finance (and fiance) limits me to (well) under $1k.
1) single AV123 MFW-15? ~$750 delivered, desired color is 90 days out per AV123.
2) pair of SVS PB12-NSD? local used sale...newer amps, $600 (or less) for the pair.
3) single ED A5-350, if i can find one?
seems like a no brainer...pair of SVS, no? cheapest, moves the most air, eases placement issues. but would one be enough? $300 vs $700+ is a pretty strong case...
You may want to pursue the used market, you might be able to score a PC-13 or something along those lines for ~$1000.

All fair options. Are you sure you want to limit to these 3? How old are the NSDs? What do you mean by newer amps.
DaveUpton 01-20-09, 12:04 AM You may be able to wait and see what kind of deals fly your way, however AV123 does occasionally offer dual MFW's for 1000, or you can pick up a mix and match used pair for a similar amount, that would be my recommendation. Regardless of all the bad press some people give the MFW most of the issues have now been resolved, turnaround times for any fix are very fast, and most of all the bang for your buck is unbeatable.

If its YOUR 4000' ditch the fiance NOW and buy what the hell you want.
If not both the Sub and the wife will disappoint.
If its hers, research on. (SVS PC12NSB my vote )
jongaro 01-20-09, 12:28 AM build your own and you'll get more for your money!
Looneybomber 01-20-09, 12:29 AM Wow, 4000sqft. Good luck with that! :)
Something I saw a guy do was put together a system with 12, 10" woofers. Check it out over at the DIY forum. They cost ~360.00, amp ~300.00, eq ~100.00. That leaves around 200.00 for wood/materials.
dookie1 01-20-09, 02:12 AM i should add (remind?)...$1k is a not to exceed, $750 +/- is a better target.
no DIY, thanks. too much else to waste time on!
'new' amps in PB12s...apparently there was a running change ~4-5/'07 to a significantly improved amp. these are early '08 production.
i'm not limited to these choices, but they seem to be the most recommended...perhaps with the addition of the VTF3.3. what else would you suggest? why?
finally, it's our 4000ft and our money, and i get the same input on her whimsical expenditures of this magnitude. sometimes checks & balances are a good thing...save us from ourselves and all. 'WAF' is an oft-quoted spec here, and the suggestion to ditch is decidedly unappreciated.
lalakersfan34 01-20-09, 03:09 AM If movies are your priority, the pair of PB12-NSD's is probably your best bet. For music, the edge probably goes to the single MFW-15. <$600 for two PB12-NSD's is a great deal, though - especially if they're less than a year old and in good condition. That's my vote unless the majority of your listening is going to be music.
dookie1 01-20-09, 06:47 PM movies are by far the priority.
spoke to the PB12 seller today. he quickly made up my mind with a 'get 'em gone' price of $500 for the pair. add an additional investment of $35 for a tank of gas and 5hrs of round-trip drive time (ok, not so local) and it's still a steal and a half.
fearing the too good to be true, i did confirm with SVS that he was in fact the original purchaser and that the remaining warranty is transferable.
schwing! i pick 'em up thurs...alert the neighbors.

Oh original owners and transferable warranty, that's a nice deal. But 4000sqft. Wow, that's a lot of area to pressurize. I have about 1/10th that to worry about, and I thought that was bad enough.

"31x16x8" is 4000 cubic feet, not square feet; his room is only 500sq ft. The thread title must be a typo.
dookie1 01-21-09, 02:30 PM oops...yes, a (now corrected) typo.
^2? ^3? it's just +1.
