View Full Version : Oh no! Another sub amp dies quietly. Help!

I have enjoyed my Orb Audio Super 8 sub as part of my "People's Choice" system for about three years now. I never cranked on it or anything. It's been in pristine climate controlled conditions. However, it got really quiet last night. I tried everything. The sub turns on (with a little thump) but it doesn't make a sound beyond that. I know the output signal is good (using line level, not speaker level). I know the power (electicity/surge protector) is good. I also checked the fuse and I peeked inside to make sure nothing was unplugged. Still nothing. I emailed Orb and got a propmpt response. Since I'm out of warranty, they said they'd sell me a newer version of my Super 8 amp for $189. I didn't ask to see whether or not they required that I ship the bad amp or the complete sub to them for the swap or if they'd just sell me the amp to install myself, which I'm perfectly comfortable doing.

I'm not looking for huge bass but I'm trying to decide if it's worth having my sub amp inspected by my trusty electronics tech friend who can fix almost anything. Or, if I should bite the bullet and buy the replacement amp. Or finally, should I look elsewhere? I doubt seriously that I'd find anything in the $200 range that would be anywhere near acceptable.

If anyone out there is intimately familiar with the internal components and could offer advice on what most often fails I'd love to hear it.

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

It seems that I may have put the Jinx on the sub bass forums. Every time I mention The Towering Inferno somebody’s sub goes up in flames!:D

Looks like a nice little sub can’t see any reason why its buggered up on you? Unless of course you’ve been pushing it over its limit! You need to add more subs if it isn’t doing the trick that is the art to getting big cinematic bangs and crashes more of the same or large cinema PA sub won't let you down since films are mostly mixed on JBL cinema PA.

You made on reference to what music or films you last played with this sub? Just let it not be The Towering Inferno! :D

JBL,

Is that the latest Super 8? Mine has screw down banana plugs for the speaker level in and my power cord isn't removable. Mine doesn't have feet on it that come to that sharp of a point either.

I've never been disappointed in the sub. It does what I need without taking up a lot of space. I'm just in a conundrum as to what move to make my system complete again.

Afternoon jeff

I wouldn’t know? I just highlighted the text and pasted it into Google image search. Get loads of subs its almost impossible to get uniform coverage over the seating area with one and if your lucky enough to achieve it with one awesome.

I took the sub to my local electronics repair friend. He found an issue with part of the power supply that caused a hum. The hum blew one of the caps. I should be fixed and good as new for under $100, maybe even under $50.
