View Full Version : SVS New PB12-Plus vs New PC12-Plus
Arturing 01-21-09, 04:56 PM Hi I’m new here, came across this site after updating my three year old Pani TH-50PX 500U with a Pro-151 from Pioneer, so i decide also to refresh the surround, I have a modest HTIB about 2 years old, so I started with the receiver, after trying a couple of Denon A/V receivers I decide to go with a Onkyo 876, I then turn my attention to subs, from I I’ve been reading SVS makes a great product and their customer service seems to be top notch.
My room is 19x13x81/2 with 6f open going to dinning room and kitchen and a 7f open to a small lobby (front door).
I’m inclined to the new PC12-Plus and the new PB12-Plus, I’ve seen a lot of information on the new PC12 but nothing on the new PB12 plus, so I was looking for some input from the experts, all the help would be appreciated.
I just got my Pb12 Plus about 1 week ago and no complaints so far :D. The Pb12 may be able to extend a couple Hz down lower over the Pc12 but from what I understand in real world listening you wouldn't be able to tell any difference. Between the two I think it basically boils down to whether you need a smaller footprint and whether or not you like the looks of each.

The PB12 does not extend a few Hz more than the PC12. You are confusing it with the PB13 vs PC13 comparison. The PB13 extended deeper than the PC13 because it had more internal volume and the PC13 used the same dimensions used in the PC12.
The difference of PB12 and PC12 is very small, and you will not notice it.
Thanks for correcting me Chengbin. This was a quote about the two I found in an earlier thread about the Pc12+ and Pb12+ from Ed Mullen of SVS which might help Arturing:
The two form factors will never have an identical frequency response simply due to the woofer and port orientation and the woofer base plate.
To a lesser extent, the form factor also affects max output capability, in addition to small differences in internal enclosure volume and system tuning frequency. I don't have the data in front of me, but my recollection is the two Plus subs were within 2 dB (or closer) at each tone burst test frequency.
The cylinder diameter is fixed and experimentation with various tube lengths, port lenths, and sytem tuning frequencies indicated the current dims are just about ideal. In other words we're extracting as much performance as we can from the current Plus cylinder geometry.
We've also worked with larger cylinder diameters (18", 20", 22", 24") and even a small increase in diameter looks much larger in person, and simply started to stray too far from what makes the cylinder form factor so appealing - its ability to tuck into corners and tight spaces where the box just can't fit.
Regardless, we had size/weight/footprint goals with the box version and we extracted as much performance as we could from this form factor while staying within those goals. We didn't use the cylinder performance envelope as any sort of artificial limitation when designing the box version.
In a final analysis, the two versions are sufficiently close in performance that the choice can/should boil down to personal form factor preference and what fits best into your living space and decor.
Arturing 01-22-09, 09:38 PM Thank you for all the info, i was thinking of going with the New PB12 plus but my wife is telling me to go with the PB13 U.
I'm just concerned with the sheer size and weight of the beast, I'm asking myself do i need such a big sub? my room is not a dedicated HT room..

It is EXTREMELY rare that a wife would tell you to get a bigger sub. Savor this chance and GET it.

I'm not an expert nor do I play one on TV but....
If you have the funds; get the big mamu. I have never seen a person say here "my sub is too big, shoulda went smaller".
Also I'm led to believe its more important to have a bigger sub in a non-dedicated room than a HT to make up for more open space one needs a bigger sub. A closed dedicated room requires less sub.

You can always turn a more powerful sub down, but you can't effectively turn a less powerful sub up!
Go for the Ultra--I did and I'm continually grinning about its performance!!!
Arturing 01-28-09, 11:04 PM So...i came across the tread SVS PB13 vs JL f113, and ask the wife which one she liked best? She likes the JL f113, because of the size and finish, i was inclined to get the PB13, but now I'm not sure any more.
Whatever sub i get, it's mostly for movies and tv, maybe some music.
Squozen 01-29-09, 05:31 AM I think your room is large enough (given the openings) to go for the PB13U - which is the one I'm saving for, even though my room is 11'x14'x10'.
