View Full Version : what causes my cablevision explorer 8300hd to reboot on its own
captnemo 01-21-09, 10:21 PM what causes my cablevision explorer 8300hd to reboot on its own. Twice in a month I turned on my explorer 8300hd dvr box and it started rebooting by it self. This was 3 weeks apart. My box was manufctured 12/05 and I had it 7 months without a problem. Also is it common for these box to reboot iby themselves. If it keeps happening I will replace, but again not sure if this normal.
After I shut down box I heare noises comming from the box which sounds like hd. Is this normal

If I leave it on I am consummig more electric and besides it hapened so infrequently I would have to leave box on for a whole month. Also is normal to hear hard drive noises even if box is shut of
oktoberrust11 01-23-09, 02:22 PM Well, if it's like most DVR's, and I think it is, hitting the power button doesn't really shut the unit off. As you said, the hard drive is still spinning, and if a recording is scheduled, it still records with the power off. What I'm getting at is I don't think you're saving a whole lot of power by shutting the unit off, save for the energy consumption of a couple of little lights.
cypherstream 01-24-09, 12:02 PM Software updates can cause reboots. Also if the Watchdog timer encounters an event, it will reboot the box.
An event would be, memory corruption, power supply slightly out of tolerance, error in the guide program, etc... They are sensitive just in case a hacker is trying to probe the box for info or run unsigned code. The watchdog timer will immediately power cycle the box, not only to deter hackers but to prevent malfunctions and freezes so you don't have to get up and unplug the thing.
Make sure the box isn't getting too warm also. If the sounds you're hearing from the hard drive sound like clicking rather than read/write sounds, the hard drive may be fixing to crash which happens a lot on those boxes.
captnemo 01-24-09, 06:52 PM The box rebooted again today. This seems to happen to only happens after the box was off for about 12 -15 hours. The second I turn on the power button it started rebooting . This happen 3 weeks ago, 3 days ago and today . I am not setting any recording. About a month and half ago I started using the hdmi connection with ny new tv and a month ago I bought a new surger protector strip from radio shack.
I did a Hard reboot after this happened today and maybe that will fix it. What do you think the problem is
ned4spd8874 02-14-09, 11:30 PM Any luck figuring this out??? I have had 3 boxes now that are doing this!!! The last technician said there was enough space around the unit, so it shouldn't be a heat issue. I moved the shelving anyway a little to give it about an extra inch.
But it's still rebooting! The last time it happened was in the middle of a recording, but it never picked the recording after rebooting. Weird.
I have Wow cable. But I'm sure it's not the provider's fault. Sounds like Scientific Atlantic has some crappy DVR's!!!

your box could be defective. You could have signal problem. If you replace it make sure you get brand new one, not reconditioned. Very important make sure your cable company provisioned your cable box, because that will cause rebooting. My new box I found out was not provosioned which caused rebooting.

But I've been through 3 boxes so far and they all reboot! This last one is a brand new box and it's rebooting on me now. I remember them mentioning the provisioning thing before, so I'm sure that's okay. They came out and tested my signal and they said that's okay too.
I had this box for about 2-3 months before it started the rebooting thing on me this time. The last box lasted for about a month before it started, but the box before that went years before showing problems. This is frustrating.
