"LG shows off plasma TV with one billion-to-one contrast ratio

LG has showed off two new plasma HDTVs dubbed the Xcanvas bobos 42PQ60D and 50PQ60D. The larger model boasts an unprecedented 1,000,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a 600Hz refresh rate.
Both models have built-in USB ports that allow users to playback many file types including WMV and DivX videos.
According to the source, "speakers are built into either TV, each of which is just over 3 inches thick. For efficient energy use, an ambient light sensor will dim the backlight of each set as conditions dictate, and the feature is said to reduce as much as 60 percent of a conventional plasma HDTV's energy use."
The TVs are set for release in Korea beginning mid-February with prices equivalent to $1,022 and $1,460 USD, respectively. There was no word on whether the TVs will have North American or European releases."
joeycalda 01-22-09, 12:09 AM how do you even measure that?
the price seems pretty low.....BTW the link was unresponsive
Steve Bruzonsky 01-22-09, 12:16 AM Joey, the link works fine. Turn down your display contrast and you will see the link. HA!
Billion to One! Sure!
Me, if Cineramax measures it and tells me, then I'll believe it. Only then can LG come out with a Promestheus Plasma HDTV, curved TORUS style, at least 110" wide with ONE BILLION contrast!!!@@@
Joey, what do you care about contrast. You're putting up posts about projecting a 40 foot wide picture on a snow bank. HA!

I see the link. Looks official to me.
rydenfan 01-22-09, 12:03 PM Good thing it is not made by SIM or that would really throw him over the ledge :)
Alan Gouger 01-22-09, 02:36 PM I think that surpasses the contrast for OLED. I have the little Sony and cant wait for larger screen sizes. The image is unreal and when it fades to black it is black.
The only way to achieve 1,000,000,000:1 contrast this thing has to be very bright. You cannot go blacker then black you can only go brighter to expand contrast.
.
1M:1 might have some meaning but 1B:1 is not a meaningfull number.
Alan G.
It must be easier to turn brightness down than to make something almost infinately bright.
Alan Gouger 01-22-09, 04:56 PM Mattias if only some manufacture would get brave and give us a laser projector do you think we could ever see this number in FP?
DougWinsor 01-22-09, 05:34 PM I assume this is dynamic ratio, so what is the real number we are looking at?
Gradius2 01-22-09, 07:05 PM Why the surprise?
They should say 1 trillion already, not billion.
Billion is way too small, no thanks!

If you have true black and 1 L whites, the CR is infinite.

I am waiting for Cineramax to chime in here. He is the self-proclaimed expert of UBERKONTRAST!!!!

That is not my claim to fame, SUPERKONTRAST is.:D
It only applies to D-Cine projectors and it's only 5,500-1 versus 2,200-1 which is the standard. Somehow it is sufficient to still make the DCI image king of the road because of the other beneficial factors of DCI optics and electronics on bit depth headroom, pixel purity and ability to enjoy the pixel array at a much closer seating distance.

What does that mean? Pixel purity? And how is it related to enjoying sitting closer?

With 3dlp it means that the pixels are seen as a complete array sitting solidly in the background of the image, no pixel ringing, pastiness or beehive swarm noise effect callling attention to individual pixels. This seems to be the biggest advantage of the DCI class over the regular 2k.

I coined the term Uberkontrast back in 1974. This was part of my early marketing campagn for my line of theater-in-your-home .This was at that time a part time job to pay my way through school. I had to give it up as the academics became my focus.
The term uberkontrast was resurrected recently after the SIM2 Lumis was found to have both the highest sequential and ANSI contrast of any DLP based device. Do not mistake the simple term uberkontrast with the uberkontrast PQF(Picture Quality Factor) which is the ANSI X on/off.

CINERAMAX 01-25-09, 09:15 AM This is beginning to sound like the old Who Coined Home Theater thread.:D

I made sure I acknowledged that I had not. My Theater-In -The-Home is of course similar and likely where others later got the Home Theater term.
