View Full Version : Bought a house, now i'm WAY under-subbed
boostfrenzy 01-22-09, 09:41 AM Using 1 Cadence CSX-15, currently my HT is in the upstairs while I finish the flooring in the HT room downstairs (13x11x8), the room upstairs is about 25 wide by 20 long with ~14-15ft cathedral ceilings, my sub is pretty much useless in this room.... what COULD fill a room like that?
blued888 01-22-09, 09:54 AM Budget?

i probably will never put a HT setup in this room permanantly, but I'm just curious what it'd take to fill a room like this... I thought the CSX-15 was a pretty hardcore unit, but it might as well be nonexistant in this room... here's a pic:

blued888 01-22-09, 10:18 AM Multiple subwoofers would fill that space nicely, it is pretty hard to fill. 7500 cubic feet is huge!
boostfrenzy 01-22-09, 10:21 AM hopefully it fares like it did in my old apartment when i move the stuff to the HT room downstairs
blued888 01-22-09, 10:23 AM Btw having a smaller room doesn't necessarily mean you will have tons more bass output, you will have to take into consideration your room acoustics.

what's killing me upstairs, the high ceilings?

The space you have is a pretty big space to fill, even for high-end subwoofers such as a SVS PB13-Ultra.

Cubic volume is what's killing your output. You have ~8,000 cu. ft. in that room, and it would take 2 high end subwoofers to fill it to reference levels. You'd probably have to spend about $2,000 for 2 commercial off the shelf subs to fill that room really well.

boostfrenzy 01-22-09, 10:40 AM was afraid that was the case, i don't want to spend any money on HT right now only had the house for a few days, have a lot of window coverings and other stuff to buy, hopefully i'm satisfied again using the room downstairs... if not upgrading AGAIN!
fireman325 01-22-09, 11:11 AM You mentioned that you're working on the flooring in the HT room. What kind of flooring are you putting in? The flooring (carpet vs tile or hardwood) can have a huge affect on how your HT sounds.
ndskurfer 01-22-09, 11:17 AM off-topic question:
Is that a DVR/cable box under the receiver?
You may want to get that thing some more ventilation. I had a similar set-up 5 years ago and fried my DVR box. I'm sure the xBox is fine, but I would just make sure that has plenty of ventilation as well (had one of those fry on me as well - the only warranty I have ever bought and the only one that I have ever needed).
You have a start of a nice set-up, have fun with it.
I have an SVS PC13 Ultra filling a much smaller room. I wish I could give input through comparisons, but I have never tried filling a room that large. I will be testing out a dual 10" Altec sub w/ 1000 watts in my brother's house in the next month (sub is 15 years old and sitting in storage for most of that). He has a lay-out in his new home almost identical to yours and plans to use the sub as a coffee table. He is a true bachelor. He is waiting for me to set it up - wish he would hurry up as he needs to feel the bass I am feeling when playing Gears of War II (co-op).
Move everything over about 3 feet to the right and put the sub in the corner. It'll use the walls to better effect. Make sure you've adjusted the phase correctly on setup.
boostfrenzy 01-22-09, 12:15 PM I'm going to carpet the lower room, this setup upstairs is pretty temporary (hopefully!), I can't really move everything over due to the living room/dining room/kitchen being one open space and the couch is on the staircase wall, I had preferred the sub go in the corner, but don't have the room :/
There's a descent amount of output, broke some stuff downstairs playing it loud, just doesn't fill the living room worth a damn (i'm running the gain about 1/4 and the SW preout is about +3db)
this will be the HT room here soon with a pool table from where I was standing

really hoping this one sub will do the job!
thirdeye11 01-22-09, 12:48 PM What's the shelf all the way around the room for? Just curious. Looks really odd.
boostfrenzy 01-22-09, 12:51 PM What's the shelf all the way around the room for? Just curious. Looks really odd.
that's the foundation, it's a "daylight" basement... a smart builder makes a "shelf" out of that to gain square footage in the basement instead of evening it out, makes for a good ledge to put stuff too
..and when i play the sub upstairs, those bulbs fall out of that fixture and break on the floor lol!
I had to read your thread several times before I understood that this is just a fantasy. But since you want to know what it would take, it's pretty easy to throw around a few subs that can handle 7,500 cubic feet.
1) Genelec HTS6 Retail $10,000
2) Danley several models
3) PB-13 Ultra X 2
4) HSU ULS-15 Quad Pack $4,000
5) Epic Conquest ~$2,000
6) Ed A7-900 $2,200

Well it's a fantasy for now, but maybe some day in the future i'd like to have smoe stuff in that room... not at those prices right now though! I still need to furnish the house, buy a procharger etc lol
You need a Wilson Audio Thor's Hammer (http://www.hometheaterreview.com/equipment-reviews/audio-reviews/subwoofer-reviews/wilson_audio_thors_hammer_subwoofer_reviewed002043.php).
uni_panther 01-22-09, 02:36 PM I admit to being a novice around here but how are people coming up with numbers so large on cubic feet? His dimensions are 25X20 and with the vaulted ceiling in the picture it slopes gradually, it isn't 14 to 15 foot all the way across for heighth. I'm guessing by the looks of it that it is a standard 8 foot at the walls and slopes up.
So 25X20X8= 4000
Then even if we take the 15 foot number since it is the higher value we have
25X20X7=3500 and 3500/2 = 1750
4000+1750= 5750
Am I goofing something up because I have a room that is 23X21 with a 12 foot vaulted ceiling and I figured my cubic feet to be 4830. Did I mess up?

I prefer a Vortech :D
boostfrenzy 01-22-09, 02:51 PM I prefer Vortech :D
not sure if vortech makes a kit for 2008 vettes?
When you have a large open space as I did (over 8800cf), nearfield placement is you friend. Find a location that is close to your LP and you won't have to worry about filling the whole space.

A&A utilize the Vortech V3 T-Trim on their kits. They made a little over 600 rwhp on a stock LS3. ATI still makes very nice kits. C6's are my realistic dream car

oh, yeah I was going to purchase an A&A kit... didn't realize they were vortech blowers in the kit :D
OK, not a sub woofer thread.

We don't know if it's 50/50, but yes it'd definitely closer to 6000cf than 7500. Still a lot of space to fill.
boostfrenzy 01-23-09, 05:16 PM the y-splitter they sent me with the sub is junk (lose one fo the leads sometimes), finding that out improved things... still not enough though
Putting a sub in a corner will boost it's out put, you have it directly in the middle of a wall, not good for under subbed as you put it.

Get some real induction, go TT already. :D
Before I enveloped myself here on this forum these past couple weeks, I stuck around ls1tech. Good times. :p

You found that using a Y splitter so you could run dual feeds to the Cadence increased output in some way that turning up the level of your sub at the receiver, or turning up the volume knob on the sub couldn't do?
I was unaware that anyone was having a problem driving the Cadence to its maximum was difficult without a Y splitter.
