View Full Version : (4) Artison In wall Subs or (1) SVS Ultra 13
stump4545 01-22-09, 03:56 PM got room for only 1 Ultra 13 or i can get (2) artison or even (4) artison in wall subs in my big room appox 17x25x25
should i just get an ultra 13 and call it a day, or should i go for (2) or even (4) in wall Artisons?
Given only these 2 options, and only these 2 options, which would you guys choose?
like always.
thanks in advance.
t6902wf 01-22-09, 04:03 PM I would go for the Ultra over in walls. Do you have a link to the Artisans, they don't come up easily in a search.
Why only 2 options?
I have never heard of the Artisans.
However, generally speaking the in-wall units are typically lacking in low end grunt. In addition, you are really limited to placement, etc.
Go with at least one PB-13 or something else.
chengbin 01-22-09, 04:12 PM I would choose the PB13.
You have a huge room, you need at least 2 PB13s in your room to properly energize the room.
stump4545 01-22-09, 05:20 PM all things considered i only have room for 1 ultra 13.
artison makes one of the best in wall around so i hear

Be that as it may, it is like comparing the best computer speaker to a real speaker, it just doesn't fare up.
Snowmanick 01-22-09, 06:00 PM Another vote for the Ultra.
I have been drooling over my neighbors since he got one. Also, I have yet to hear an in-wall that truly competes with a properly made box/cylinder sub other than an IB set up. True in-wall subs have come a long way but most likely you would still get better performance out of a single box/cylinder at a much more advantageous price to performance ratio.
stump4545 01-22-09, 07:03 PM understood.
i was just thinking (4) great inwalls would give more even coverage in my big room.
i heard the artison is one of the best in walls around so i thought multiple artisons would work real well.
robchow 01-22-09, 07:18 PM If real estate is a concern, why not look at the PC13-Ultra for a small footprint?
PsychoM3 01-22-09, 07:30 PM 4 RC600s would be in the $7k plus range right? For that kinda dough there should be some more options a custom floor/attic mounted IB system etc. Just curious if it is just floor space why not stacked Ultras or maybe a single more capable sub?
The 4 RCs would give you more SPL but unlikely plumb as deep. With the ft^3 you have in that room given you are set on one of these two directions I would have a hard time picking and money not withstanding I would probably go the Artison route (SPL over SQ/extension) for HT only, however, factoring in the price I would find a way to get dual Ultra performance in the form factor you require.
stump4545 01-22-09, 07:37 PM can i place 2 svs cylinder ultra's on there side rather then standing straight up?

If you can stop it from rolling, I think you can.
sourbeef 01-22-09, 07:59 PM can i place 2 svs cylinder ultra's on there side rather then standing straight up?
yes, you can lay them on their sides. I have never done it, mind you, but I posed that question to SVS before.
stump4545 01-22-09, 08:35 PM any loss in sound quality by doing so?
i will have them braced to stop them from moving due to vibrations.
they will also be in one corner of the room next to each other laying down.
will the bass sound localized at all since so much bass will be coming from one area of this large room?

No loss in quality but why not stack two PB13 Ultra's would take up a lot less floor space?
As long as the Xover is low enough (standard 80hz would be fine) you should not have any localization... assuming nothing in the corner vibrates. Many so called localizaton issues come not from the sub but from exciting loose objects (walls included) that resonate at higher freqs which can of course be localized.
If you can have two tubes laying down but not the stacked PBs maybe an eD a7-900 might work but have some friends over to move it...400+ pounds.
chengbin 01-22-09, 09:00 PM I think if you're really limited in space, dual stacked PB13 or dual PC13 is the best option.
sivadselim 01-22-09, 09:02 PM Hell, if you can lay down down 2 Ultra tubes, you should be able to accommodate 2 PB13Us NOT stacked.
stump4545 01-22-09, 09:50 PM will try to fit 2 ultra 13's next to each other first.
if not enough room will lay down 2 tubes.
any advice on port plugs.
1 or 2 or no plugs with my big room considered?
will posts pics of room soon.
chengbin 01-22-09, 09:52 PM For your large room, it is suggested to leave it at 20Hz mode.

Are you talking about cylinders here or PBs? If so why not stack 2 PBs before you go to dropping the PCs on their sides if the PBs won't fit side by side.
As for tuning it would be better to just experiment with all the options.
sivadselim 01-22-09, 10:52 PM any advice on port plugs.
1 or 2 or no plugs with my big room considered?LOL. Buy the sub(s) first. Experiment with the plugs later. Why is that even a concern at this point in the process?
stump4545 01-23-09, 03:55 PM its going to be (2) svs cylinders lying down on their side.
2 box svs won't fit in my room stacked or next to each other.
do the box ultra's offer marked improvement over the cylinder versions or not really?
No, boxes or cylinders have minimal differences.

interesting that in a room that big you are finding it hard to place two boxes.
