View Full Version : CES a bust this year
maxdog03 01-25-09, 02:28 PM Maybe it's just me but it seems there just wasn't anything exciting coming out of the 2009 CES show this year. What's funny is there was a post started almost identical to this last year in January about the 2008 show. Have we become to spoiled and has the economy slowed down some of the technological advancements?
Thoughts? :)

Peter Putman article on CES 2009

He says that attendance was very low, and there were:
"NO SURPRISES
For myself, the 2009 CES was a pretty tame event. There was little to see in the way of groundbreaking display technologies, and I had only a pair of offsite meetings scheduled to see any cutting-edge products. (Compare that with ten meetings last year to see the latest in laser, LED, and emissive display technologies.)"

Never!

Stop making sense. :D

In my case I have been very happy with what I have even though I know there are better available now but that doesn't stop me from still window shopping and keeping up with what's new. Probably drives sales people crazy but I enjoy strolling through the stores, especially some of the higher end B&M's just to check it out even though I'm not in the market. A guy can always dream. :D
I'm kinda dissappointed also. But at this stage it's really hard to know exactly what Panasonic and Pioneer will bring this year. At this point I'd be happy to get a 7020 if there was such a thing. A 65" TV will be nice but it's really not that much larger than a 60"er. Then again if there was a 70"er I'd probably be disappointed with the price tag anyways. I really don't want to go FP for a larger screen. :(

I do that too. So far I have been successful in not crossing the line that separates anticipation of better things to come from being dissatisfied with the reality as it exists here and now. How do you like this bit of poetic wisdom?
I travel allot and can't make it to see CES. I typically depend on guys here to provide reports on what was there and provide some pictures. So far for this years show, I have seen very little that anybody is excited about.
I had hoped that there would at least be one display of the neo-PDP, from what I have seen, there was none on display.

Panasonic showed a strong lineup of neo-PDP models at CES 2009, and they will start releasing them within the next few months.

He mentions improved black levels, but anymore that is kind of a mute argument. How are the brightness levels that were long thought to be an improvement of the neo-PDPs?

Acording to D-Nice in the 09 Panasonic thread, they will be able to hit at least 110fL on a full white screen, they will be very bright.

Solo4114 01-26-09, 11:55 AM I dunno. I wouldn't be doing a ton of expensive R&D or starting new product lines in this economy, unless they were "economy" product lines. I wouldn't start a new razzle-dazzle lineup, though, that's for sure.
Toknowshita 01-26-09, 01:29 PM What about the announced Samsung LED backlight LCD models moving into more of their lines besides the top A950 line.
LED backlight will be a game changer in the flat panel market.

Clearly not. :p

110 is impressively bright. Now if only they'd allow us to disable that damn automatic brightness limiter they might start attracting over people who up until now prefered the look of LCDs.

Local dimming is the game changer.
LED edge lighting might offer a small improvement in picture quality, but I can't see anyone who was intending to buy a plasma deciding to buy and LCD instead simply because of it.

That number is with the ABL enabled, I don't think that many will be watching the set at levels where they might notice the ABL.....

Indeed. For me, I'd like to disable the ABL and set the brightness at 100% stimulus to around 120cdm^2 / 35ft-L. If they can make it do 110ft-L then that should be easy to do, but they just refuse to let us do it.
Even if they keep the ABL control in the service menu to keep it out of the hands of people who have no idea what they're doing, I could work with that.

The question of the decade, will it be as bright as my LCD.....
One of the biggest issues with plasma IMO, the other issues, I could live with.
