View Full Version : AX200 with Xbox 360

So I did a search and didn't see anything specific to my problem. I have both VGA and Component connections for the Xbox 360, I have always played with VGA on the AX100u but now that I replaced a defective 100u I wonder about the 200u.

According to the 200u directions I can achieve 1980 by 1020 (or whatever) resolution, which I set Xbox 360 to. However, I seem to get these very slight grey bands of color during movement across the screen, they are thick and only when moving, and they are very light. I played around with projector settings and got nowhere (such as dynamic iris, etc) and then played with the reference levels on Xbox (which I don't even know what those are) and they didn't seem to do the trick.

Question is this. Should I not be on that resolution? Lower resolutions seemed to really alter the quality and color on the "Game" setting on the AX200u (the "game" setting is excellent BTW).

I also could go back to component cables and run at 720p, which might be simpler. I know the debate rages on forever but I always had the understanding that VGA > Component in this kind of situation.

Thanks in advance :D

I bought the Xbox 360 VGA cable to get DVD upscaling and went back to component because at the time the colour seemed the best on component. Might have been a gamma thing, but now there are gamma settings that can adjust for this.

As for your problem, are you sure your VGA is up to snuff?

Oh and I find 720p output from the Xbox 360 gives me the best quality. YMMV. There's no real point in using 1080p for games, since the projector is 720p native anyway.

P.S. There are already a couple of PT-AX200U threads.

I just popped the component back in to give it a try but its booting up heh. I played on 1280 x 720 which Visual Apex says is native for the AX200u but that definitely cuts stuff off the sides.

NOTE: If it makes a difference for any of my tests I never restarted the projector as I didn't want to wait for it to cool down to power it back up.

Anyone else have any comments or suggestions to get the best quality? The 1980 x 1080 had such an incredible picture, it's a shame to switch.

Not that it will help in your situation but my 360 is connected to my pioneer VSX9120 via component and that is fed to my AX200U via 35' HDMI.

Amazing picture quality, haven't synced it for guitar hero and rock band but other games have no issues. Left 4 dead, Call of Duty 4 and other fast games play extremely well.

1280 x 720 cuts stuff off the sides? What stuff? Weird.

It wasn't bad, it was playable. But it pushed the headings in the dashboard completely to the side, pushed the radar on Halo 3 straight against the side (so that a tiny bit was cut off) etc. That does seem odd though if native resolution is 720 / 1280 x 720. This stuff drives me crazy, I love projectors but I wish I could just plug everything in and know everything is perfect , like one of those TV's from the 90's or whatever (I hear some people still use those things) :D.

I feel like there is some flickering too like when in the dashboard and I switch items, but I am thinking that might just be the projector light change bouncing off the ceiling, walls, etc. My setup does go about half an inch below the ceiling (and above the floor) so that is probably it.

It can be hard to tell since other than a brief foray into Halo 3 last night all I have been playing is Quake 4 and a little Guitar Hero, both very dark games.

I did watch a few episodes of Samurai 7 in the HD-DVD player and didn't notice any flicker or bands etc, so I am fairly confident at this point anything I see is an Xbox "issue". I am very OCD about this stuff though and notice every little flash of color .

NOTE at 1980 x 1020: I only noticed the gray bands in Halo 3, now the other two games are pretty dark so maybe I just wouldn't notice them, or maybe its a Halo problem?

EDIT: It also seems weird that I would notice a definite improvement in picture quality switching from 1920 x 1080 to 1280 x 720 (if I am not mistaken those are just 1080p and 720p). If the AX200 runs native at 720p, I would assume inputting 1080p wouldn't be a big jump like that? The difference was definitely in the colors, much deeper and richer colors. Maybe this was just a reset issue or something though (as in the projector or Xbox needed to be restarted after switching input/output from 1080 to 720).
